@@jenniferhamer167 It is a sad truth for working horses, if they are crippled they are not of much use. If that was a mare, the owner could still use the horse to raise foals, but a crippled gelding is pretty much doomed.

It’s super disappointing that the owner of this horse is not following through when it comes to his feet. Not every horse owner deserves a horse. Horses are an expensive venture, don’t get one if you can’t afford to properly care for one. I bought a foundered pony once just to get him away from his abusive owner. It cost a small fortune to get him well but he was very sweet and he brought my children lots of joy. Caleb, you sound like such a caring person. Great job! I just subscribed to your channel, looking forward to watching in the future.

Unless it was posted somewhere: we dont know if the owner discontinued all farrier work for this horse, just with this farrier. He may have found a cheaper farrier, or one that he wanted finally had an opening. Could be he felt judged and looked for another, or one closer to home. The horse could have passed, and we dont know. He could have decided to sell and get a horse that he could start riding immediately. I'm not saying you're wrong, I agree it is most likely, but that is not a certainty. We all know what assuming makes us. Peace to you. Im hoping for the best. Have a good one.

Laminitis is inflammation of the sensitive lamina of the foot. Founder is what happens when laminitis isn’t dealt with and as a result the coffin bone detaches and rotates or sinks. Laminitis can be treated and the effects can be healed. Once rotation/sinking has occurred though the damage is permanent. A recovery can be made if rotation/sinking is not extreme. It will take a lot of time and major changes in management but it can be done. Now if the coffin bone goes through the sole or shows signs of degeneration/infection then the kindest thing is to give the last act of kindness.

the alternative in the countryside of those countries is the animals not getting seen or trimmed at all. Its tough to explain the situation in those countries that lead to that, but china is working on its animal welfare situation. The poverty in india is horrendous. Nice job on his hooves. Im disapointed that the owners didnt get back to you and get him redone, he deserves better. My aunt had a pony that was born to big racing trotter Dam and Sire but she was a tiny little 12 hands high and a real little piglet when it came to food so on a regular basis she was put in the yard on restricted diet until she lost weight. My aunt was determined that she wasnt going to founder and kept a really close eye on her weight and always made sure her hooves (and all the other horses hooves) were well taken care of. I wish more people were like my aunt. Its nice to know you care enough to contact the owners in the hope to keep up his care.

Hey Caleb, I work in the medical field and have learned you can't save people from themselves. What is frustrating and heartbreaking is when a so called care giver doesn't allow us to care for a patient as we would desire. I "feel" about this horse, not his fault the owner isn't doing the right thing for him.

Dear Caleb, such wonderful vids and all you say is spot on. I used to keep horses and my oldest boy was a skew called Horace who was born in 1963. We had papers to prove it. Same family - us - all his life. Gorgeous animal. Never had laminitis. He finally left us aged 42 in 2005. He was bombproof. He was shod and ridden until he was 38 when his knees would take it no more. Shod and later trimmed every 6 weeks for over 20 years without fail by a lovely Farrier called Trevor. We all had such a bond with Horace and miss him to this day. As you say, horses are such tolerant animals. When Horace got older he never needed a bridle he just became like a big dog. He never bit, kicked or stable walked. His hay was always soaked, medium warming food, loved malted chaff him. And at night last check on him he’d be laid down and he’d let us trusted ones sit down with him You have a wonderful job, Mr Caleb. May you always stay so motivated and humbled by it. God bless, Sir. P.S. I am so disappointed by owners who do not care. What shame they should have.

As far as getting someone to film for you, you have two options beyond hiring a cameraman. First would be to take on an apprentice farrier and have him film. The second option would be to let various subscribers in your area film for you. Set up a network of people who are willing to film for you if they are available. Then, put the word out, and the first person to contact you for the job gets it, and the second person will be the backup if necessary. Option two is riskier, but it does rewards your subscribers.

I'm so glad you mentioned overseas farriers. You're absolutely correct. I can't watch the videos anymore. The men treat their animals so badly - most are mules and donkeys. They're scarred, underfed, never been brushed, sport open wounds, and are openly beaten. Their hooves are an atrocity - overgrown, painful, missing parts, dry, cracked, and curled. I don't think any of the owners should be allowed to own and be responsible for their animals. It breaks my heart. Great explanation of "founder"/laminitis.

Glad to see his back hoofs were not quite as bad as his front...nicely done...and I'm sure the horse feels better standing more level (If you think about the confirmation of the horse, a lot starts from the ground up...shoulders/hips/spine affected by the stance of the feet). No accounting for the decisions of some people...perhaps this owner feels some shame, so is reluctant to schedule you again. All we can hope for is that he gets some help for this horse.
