As we’ve travelled deeper and deeper into the South Pacific we’ve seen fiberglass speedboats replaced by paddling canoes. But it wasn’t until we arrived in the Louisiades that we spotted our first Sailau; The traditional sailing canoe still used to this day to travel to and from mainland Papua New Guinea which is hundreds of nautical miles away.
These canoes are used to sail families out to their farms, trade goods, take kids to school, attend sporting events and picnics. And man can they sail. They are fast! Reaching speeds upwards of 18-20 knots they beat Nahoa sailing hands down. Never mind the fact that they are constantly taking short cuts over the reef. We were in awe.
It’s a tradition still going strong with knowledge passed down thru generations. The master builders typically construct a canoe as a group of men all chewing beetle nut, laughing and discussing the intricacies of each step of the process. The trees to build the Sailaus almost all come from the island of Panaeati in the Louisiades Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. The only thing that has changed these days is the use of rope instead of vine and a handful of copper nails.
And luckily we met Reuben a lovely gentleman who offered to take us out for a day of sailing on a Sailau. We were given a quick lesson then taken out for the ride of our lives!

This Papua New Guinea series is the best series of sailing videos I've seen. It tops anything Delos or any of the others have done with regards to showing that even in far away, wild, and vastly different cultures, there is more that unites us than divides us. These videos help shrink the world in the best way possible and shows humanity is a global phenomenon, regardless of geography, culture, or resources. These videos are beautiful beyond aesthics and have opened my eyes to a hidden part of our awesome world. Thank you so much!

I really enjoyed this video. With my wife and children we lived for four years on Fergusson Island, not far from where you were. I was a teacher and we had a number of students and some teachers from Misima Island and others in the Louisiades. In our time there we saw some yachties come through. Most were good but some were impatient with the locals. You were clearly very respectful even when shocked or bemused. We left 29 years ago but my eyes still get misty watching videos like yours. The place never leaves you. Kaiyoni.

You should read "We the Navigators", (1972), by David Lewis. It's available on Amazon. Lewis studied Polynesian and Micronesian navigation in the 50's and 60's. At that time the only traditional Navigators, were the Micronesians, who used double ended outrigger canoes. Their feats of navigation were astonishing. One sailed two islands up the Marianas island chain, a trip of several hundred km., with some friends in an outrigger sailing canoe approx. 30 ft long to get some cigarettes. He said he could have waited for the government steamer to bring cigarettes, but he wouldn't have been much of a navigator if he had!

Woow. This is pretty amazing, from the tin can rasp, poly tarp sail, the moving boom(!) and the foot rudder etc. So resourceful, I will always remember this when I do repairs! Thanks for taking the time to see how 'real sailors' do it and sharing it with us too...incredible. Interesting that the women, girls and babies travel on the best(?) place, in the canoe, while the men and boys are on the 'trampoline'...respect! FYI...I only got here coz I was watching Ben fish with his DIY 'hand line'. Very resourceful too...a bit like these chaps. Take that as a compliment.

The last few videos have been some of your best that I have seen. If you are going to s be saying there for a while or returning, have you thought of doing a documentary style video about the history of the people and their way of life? Not too many KZfaqrs do any kind of in depth history of the places they visit. Usually it is just a tourism guide history snippet. Cheers!

i hate you guys! I watched your videos until 6am this morning! (I was also working with my clients in other time zones but stayed up as I was so into your videos.) This is now my BEST CHANNEL! We have to get together somewhere! I will be covering all these Islands from the top down so we should meet along the way. My focus is to help all these remote island folks so will have loads of equipment, crew like Dr's etc etc on board. I have developed our own 'magnetic drive' which will give them 'eternal' electricity without needing solar or batteries etc. So your videos are all going into a special folder "People who need help" Great videos!!!

Your genuine curiosity of their culture and respect for the people and their way of doing things, even if it's something opposite of what we would do in North America, is amazing. This is truly extraordinary and such a different perspective from what we normally see in the cruiser vlogs. You seem open and profoundly interested without a lot of rousseauian baggage. I wouldn't be so determined to prove to yourselves that filming makes "it" better---it changes it; it has to (as Heisenberg would contend). I would imagine it interferes with your experience but enriches ours, which probably means we should support you.

I found your channel a few months ago and have been watching videos up to date. Still have some 5-6 months of catching up to do. After this video I thought to myself, my god these guys are really stepping up with the quality of content as well as actually producing the videos. I thought of coming and commenting on your extraordinary development just to find out that fellow viewers are experiencing the same. I really feel like I am watching top notch documentary even when compared to big ass media corps' efforts. The even more intriguing thing is that you are really inspiring, have the right attitude towards different cultures and have the sence not to interfere even if you guys find something you consider as wrong as it is their way of life. I would so much love to be experiencing what you guys are doing but to be honest, I could never be so open towards new experiences and outgoing toward new cultures so I guess its a win-win that you guys @Nahoa are experiencing this stuff for me and others around the world to consume and co-experience. Absolutely fantastic job! I highly appreciate your efforts!

Great story! Thank you for sharing! These double-enders are like proas (outrigger always leeward). And as you guys said, it is amazing how far they can venture in them! It reminds me of "Vanishing Sail", a documentary about traditional boat building in the West Indies. The West Indies boats are much more in common with modern boats than with the sailing canoes in New Guinea, but still pretty much hand built. There is a trailer on KZfaq if anyone is interested.

I just watched "Systems and components for offshore sailing"-- was the first video of yours I ever saw, as I searched KZfaq for catamaran sailing. I'm planning to make the switch to a catamaran from a monohull. Then I went and watched the first two videos on your channel. You are totally different people. Its kinda amazing. I don't mean the tans, I mean the self confidence, the salt in your blood. (or whatever it is when you've crossed the equator under your own power.) Bravo! Also, your editing has improved hugely, you're doing a great job. I'm sure you know these Proas you're watching be made are the forefathers of your catamaran, but they're also an active modern boat design to this day-- check out Aspen Catamarans for a modern proa. (and like these boats they have less space than your cat all things considered because the outrigger hull is smaller.) PS -- When they "tack" by moving the boom, that's called a "Shunt" or "shunting". In bermuda rigged ones (like HarryProas) the boat actually changes direction and starts going backwards and the bow becomes the stern and the stern the bow.

I am really taken aback with thexe two people and their atitude. Unlike so many of the Americans I have seen have adopted a greater than thou atitude which is really abrasive, but these two people actually take time to listen and learn. Many of the people i have seen really are a bad picture of American life, and as i am sure these two people know that world wide America is the country considered to be the most likely to be the ones to start ww3, so it really is pleasing to see this couple and their connection with others during their travels, really interesting video please keep them coming And safe travelling to you both.

Gotta love the top up :) Im so intrigued by their boats. Seeing them overloaded kind of reminds me of the mopeds with 5 people riding on it.
