Very interesting to see the dog exchanging "style" for "robustness" by lowering it's CG as much as it could. When we hear about balancing on a ball we don't typically think "crawling around it", I hope some day it will be able to walk on it elegantly like accrobats do ! And a speculative video on Tesla's humanoÏd robot would be a great exception that I'd love to watch !

It works because the dog knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't, by subtracting where it is, from where it isn't, or where it isn't, from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance sub-system uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the dog from a position where it is, to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position where it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event of the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has required a variation. The variation being the difference between where the dog is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too, may be corrected by the GEA. However, the dog must also know where it was. The dog's guidance computance scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information the dog has obtained, it is not sure just where it is, however it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be, from where it wasn't, or vice versa. By differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was. It is able to obtain a deviation, and a variation, which is called "the ball"

The leash is pulling the robot off balance forcing it to keep on top of the ball. This is how the direction the robot travels in is chosen. Otherwise it would either stay in place or move randomly as it overbalances itself. The robot reacts automatically to the lead pulling to keep the ball under it.

It did , the leash is there to save it if it falls down. Yes it does look a bit tight as if the human is helping it, but think about it this way , if it has no engines , how long could the guy keep it balanced on a ball with just a leash? Idont think the leash does much tbh, in fact , to the degree that its being pulled, it actually adds another factor for the robot to counter.
