Someone's always trying to reinvent the wheel or in this case tire.Those open-sided pieces of rubber will be useless in mud in the winter time because when it freezes it's going to drive like it's driving on rims. I thought the legal speed limit in most States was 65 to 80 miles. Why would you need the average tires to be able to go 120 to 150 mph. It's easier for the cops to catch the guy when the tires blow 😁

You can see good examples of the airless tire on commercial grade lawnmowers. I looked into them for my mower but they’re like three times the cost of a standard lawnmower tire. Maybe someday but not right now. I remember on my first car I had bias ply tires, and I used to put winter tires with studs on them every December and would take them off at the end of March. Those winter tires were great.

That's fine if you have some place to store them. A lot of people live in apartments, I being one of them and I have no space to store four truck tires. So I just get the best suited tire for my needs. Where I live the roads are pretty well maintained during the winter months.

F1 race tires don't last a few races. They last about 12-40 laps. (They have different compound tires at each race so grip and durability varies)

As I’m sure every F1 fan knows, the wheel/tire dimensions are set by regulation. Until a few seasons ago, F1 used tiny 13 in wheels! They had so much sidewall that they handled a significant amount of suspension duty.

One problem with the airless tires is when snow gets packed into the inside groves and freezes. They have to cover the sidewalls with flexible rubber or there going to have serious problems in places where it snows.

@@garyssimoit does not. It takes a lot of energy to melt the ice and in order to even get any temperature increase you have to start driving but you have just been sitting there for the whole night with your icy tires now how do you think you're going to be driving to get the temperature up? The distribution of ice is not even. Lastly any temperature increases have to take you above the freezing and if not then no ice will melt.
@rickwebermusic

Yep, they'll definitely need some sort of a non-structural sidewall to prevent this issue. I imagine that would be an easy solution.
@D33Lux

The airless tires are not rock hard, its rubber so the inner grooves flex and contribute to a smoother ride. One thing for tire manufacturers to consider is to use a telfon infusion with the rubber, as the car moves the ice will crack and fall off as the tire flexes with the weight of the vehicle. Centrifugal force will also expel the ice from the tires.

Very informative....He mentioned all-season, summer, winter, run-flats and racing slicks. But he forgot to mention a new category of tire..All-Weather, which is a hybrid of an all season and winter tire...He even showed the Michelin Cross-Climate2 while talking about all-season tires...The Goodyear WeatherReady, Nokia Encompass AW01, and the Michelin Cross-Climate2 are currently the most popular all-weather options....Cooper(now owned by Goodyear) General (owned by Continental), Hankook and Pirelli also offer all-weather tire options.....

I don't know about the recommended pressure. Like my f350 front tire pressure is 60 psi and rear is 80 psi. But when I look at the front tires, they bulge out. Looks like it will wear on the outside faster. I inflate them to 71 where the front looks like all the tread is making contact. Does that make sense, or am I wrong?

I only buy all-season-tyres. I don’t drive much at all. My speed is very moderate and snow is becoming an ever lesser problem due to global warming. I live in Berlin, which is quite flat for the most part and low in altitude, and Germany is densely populated...I wouldn’t be lost in the wilderness if I had an accident here. Exchanging back and forth summer and winter tyres and storing them is too much of a mess. All season tyres are a good compromise in between and the insurance regards them as adequate for winter, just in case of a crash, I wouldn’t lose any of the coverage.

The best tire for a 4 season climate is "all-weather", which delivers better performance than all-season with a slight trade-off in tread wear. I've been using Nokians in Northern Illinois for the past 8 years on an all wheel drive and it's pretty much a beast in any weather.

Thank you for a great informative video, Scotty! When we lived in CT (now in Fla.), I used to always use winter tires on our vehicles, switching back to all season or summer tires in the warmer months. Specifically, I installed Bridgestone Blizzak tires for the winter, mounted on steel wheels, the best winter tire I have experienced. The one drawback was that the softer tread compound resulted in faster wear, so it's imperative that you take them off as soon as winter conditions are over. We lived in an area that was at a higher elevation and with some steep roads, both of our cars were AWD, the winter tires were a huge advantage for winter conditions. The airless tires offer a lot of advantages, but I wonder what happens if, probably inevitably, debris, stones, etc., gets caught in them?

Wow so I guess the cops spike strips are going to be useless to stop people in Hot pursuit's... LOL 😆

The "low profile" 45-series rubber band tires on my 2011 KIA Forte can't seem to last no more than 20,000 miles before I have to replace them. Do cars with firm ride suspension wear out tires faster?

Since I have a front wheel drive that rides pretty low, and I live in Alaska, I'll switch between Summer and Winter tires to reduce my chances of getting stuck.

I've never thought much about tires as you know. My concern has been the tire width. I know a P235/60R20 is not as wide as a P245/60R20. However, I don't understand mud tires 33/12.5R20

Not having a lot of money I've always gone for budget tires. The ones I get I usually get all 4 at the same time and with the closest (and sometimes better) ratings for noise, rolling resistance etc as possible. I never have any handling problems. Being an ex driving instructor i don't drive hard. Are we being snobbish with "I run mine on ContDunlMich X9000 Supersport Dynamic Thrust tires "? I'd honestly like to know. I live in North England so all season drizzle/ sunshine.

I have found the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus to offer superior low rolling resistance for my Honda Accord Hybrid. However, it is no longer available. Are there any truly comparable tires now available with decent 70k+ mile warranty and excellent low-rolling resistance? I have not found any currently.

Good Lord they were talking about airless tires coming out back when I was in my late forties or early fifties. I've been wondering the last few months what the heck ever happened to them.
How to put air in a tire and how much?
