The style of singing that they are making fun of at the beginning of "Zombie" is called "keening" and is a way Irish women sing for funerals and when in mourning, which this song essentially is doing....mourning the death of two British children during 'the Troubles". I hope they all went home and googled the children so they could learn more about what facilitated their deaths.

It's sad, that all the commentators were so insensitive and disrespectful to "Zombie". Especially mocking the keening of Dolores, which is an Irish traditional style for funeral songs and mourning. My fingernails curled the other way watching this.

@@Jack_Ss I'm not Irish but when I heard the song for the first time as a 13 year old girl I knew it was an extremely sad song and that it held a lot of meaning. Its not about being Irish, its about using your ears and eyes. Its obviously about war, and the way she is singing sounds like crying. You don't need to be Irish to realise that. These people were trying to be entertaining but just came out as obnoxious. Why are you upset that people are giving justifiable criticism? You sure you aren't too sensitive?

Zombie is definitely a sort of jab at how far the P-IRA had gone by that point of the troubles, and being fed-up with how the conflict was effecting children, British and Irish alike. 'Its the same old theme, since 1916, in your head, in your head they're still fighting..." Referring to The 1916 Easter Rising that ultimately was the catalyst for the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, and eventually, spiralling into the Troubles in the North. There is a heck of a lot of history driven emotion packed into this song. A century of ongoing violence in different forms that spiralled out of control as the decades wore on. Also, side note, the type of vocalization used by Dolores here is something called Keening, and is a traditional way of mourning/grieving in Ireland. It has a deep historical/cultural significance and history and I think it's the cherry on the top of this amazing and emotionally charged song.

Ring around the Rosie is about the plague, and was actually in the US before it came to England. It was written about how horrible the plague was. There were more lyrics that were printed in a book in the 1850s, but have been lost with time. It wasn’t written during the plague, and back then Ashes to ashes didn’t mean cremation. It meant death. That’s why they would say it at funerals. Also, the GOO GOO DOLLS ARE NOT ONE HIT WONDERS!! They are a great band!

99 red baloons/99 luftbaloons is extremely dark. The English version is not a translation of the German version. The English is about baloons accidentally starting a nuclear war but the German version (translated as written) takes place 100 years AFTER a nuclear war - an even darker song. All of this is hidden by a 1980s synth pop melody.

As a German I found it very interesting how they didn’t know or realize that 99 Luftballons is about the Cold War and the wall, because from the lyrics that was always so clear, eversince I was super young. And I didn’t even think about the fact, that someone who does not speak German might not find it as clear

The Fastball song... for years, I imagined little kids left behind. At least, in reality the kids were actually grown. I still kinda liked the song as people yearning to escape the humdrum of reality, only dreaming and not actually leaving their kids. Knowing that they were both elderly, is sad, but also makes me hope they had that autonomy to go out their own way, and weren't actually confused, scared, and lost at the very end. Some elderly couples do make a pact at the end, and in my opinion, after you lived a full life, raised your kids, retired and in bad health, why stay and suffer because society says so? If you lived your life for nearly a century, then I believe you have the wisdom to do what you think is best for yourself.

Also, fun fact about "Poker Face" the second time in the chorus when Gaga sings "Po-po-poker face" she's not singing "poker face," she's singing "f-- her face." According to Gaga, only one radio station ever reached out to her to confirm the lyric before playing it.

Wow, I thought sure they would bring up that Kicks song about kids wearing the latest shoes and it turns out the song is about a mass shooting at a school. Or "I Don't Like Mondays" which is also about a mass shooting at a school (and the shooter said her motive for doing it was because she didn't like Mondays). Or the "Paved paradise, put up a parking lot song because it sounds so happy, but the lyrics are about how we're slowly turning the planet into one huge parking lot with no trees. Or Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA; most people think it's a patriotic song, but it's actually a commentary about how an area is devastated when the local factory shuts down. Billy Joel's "Allentown" had a similar subject. Or even "Who Let the Dogs Out"; most think it's an innocent song about dogs, but it turns out the "dogs" in the lyrics are actually unattractive women in a club.

Fun fact regarding _Ring a Ring of Roses_ - a couple of the lyrics are noticeably different as it's known in England compared to the American version. The most standout one is that instead of "ashes, ashes" we sing "atishoo, atishoo", as in the onomatopoeia for sneezing. We also sing "roses" rather than "rosies", as you may have noticed.

How on earth do these people not know 99 Luftballons by Nena or Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls? Those songs are played everywhere in my area, even now. You always hear this stuff at the grocery store. Don't order your groceries for delivery, go to the store and learn these songs. Bust a move in aisle 5. Then again in aisle 10. Why? Because the grocery store needs some excitement and they have some decent back in the day tunes. Did you think it was all about food? Hell no!

Regarding the underlying premise of "99 Red Baloons", I think many of these people wouldn't sleep well again knowing how many times that situation happened. Many times a computer error incorrectly interpreted flying birds or just nothing as an enemy missle launch. The only reason war didn't start was a human in the minute man silos not being comfortable launching the retaliation. One of those was a simple as "Why would missiles from North Korea be coming to North Dakota instead of the West Coast?" I wish I was exaggerating.

I don't know how some people can listen to a song in their native language and not pay attention to the lyrics. I listen to a lot of songs in other languages and still know the lyrics because I check out the translations. My favourite surprise lyric was on what I thought was a party song, until I read the translation of the chorus which was "woo, there is no tomorrow, there is already a mortgage on my future" and got slapped headlong into a doom spiral about the reality of my economic future.
