Yes, I would buy one of those "monster" edgers if I had a large property with say a long driveway with lots of lawn edges or a corner block with heaps of lawn edges. Doing large areas of straight edges with a line trimmer is nuts and a sure way to get a sore back especially if you have Buffalo or Kikuyu grass!

In my geezerdom it was getting difficult to edge with a string trimmer. i was fortunate to find this same model of edger on FB Marketplace for $35.00. Brought it home dismounted the tank and carburetor. I took the carb off of the tank cleaned it, new filter and it's good to go.

I've always preferred the cut & finish of an edger like this over that of a string trimmer. I own an old McLane edger that's proven reliable for decades, but I also have some string trimmers as well since there's trimming work that an edger is just not appropriate.

I have a similar Troy Built edger, and I greatly prefer it over using a string trimmer for edging. The string trimmer can catch and before you know it, you have gouged an arc leading away from the edge of your driveway or walkway into your lawn. These walk-behind dedicated edgers are far easier to control, and I find them less tiring than trying to hold a string trimmer turned around and up in the air for edging. That being said, I've seen many pros edge with a string trimmer and once you've developed the skill, you can really move right along! Take care and God Bless.

Another good video of yours on small engine mechanical refurbishment. I love your attention to detail on even the smallest of parts, I have started applying some of your techniques to my own small engine refurbishments like taking the wheels off and cleaning/lubing the axles, makes a surprising difference in reducing pushing effort. I will also start adding lube to the flywheel brake mechanism as well:-)

Yep, I have a Husqvarna version of one of these monsters, purchased second hand for $50.00, probably a decade or more ago. You can’t beat the clean, deep gap they cut between your grass and your concrete driveway or walkway, plus - they make short work of a badly overgrown yard that has begun to grow over the concrete compared to trying to use a string trimer turned sideways. True, I don’t pull it out each and every time I cut the grass and sometimes I cheat with the string trimer when the edging is not too bad. But, at least 2-3 times during the growing season, I do drag out the old beast and put down a nice, deep, wide edge with it … and kick up a few sparks with the blade hitting concrete along the way; but no harm, no foul! The little side shaft Briggs has never failed to start. Yeah, it does take up a little badly needed space in the garage and I definitely would not be willing to pay $400 plus for a new one, but for half a buck used, I still love having and using it, so it’s well worth it’s keep!

I got one with a Tecumseh engine on it thrown in for free when I bought a mower to restore last summer. I took the engine, tires and handle hardware off the edger and scrapped it. Replaced the cast iron flywheel with an aluminum one and used the engine and handle hardware on a Craftsman mower deck that sold right away, used the wheels on another push mower that also sold quickly. Had I restored that edger it would probably have been sitting up for sale for a very long time until I gave it away, I don’t think many folks use them anymore. That starter handle is from an old Briggs vertical pull start engine btw, haven’t seen one of those in a long time!

I live out in the country so I don’t need an edger but those are easy to use because some string trimmers are a little heavy at least with these you just push it that’s the same reason I bought a trimmer mower because all you have to do is push it you don’t have to carry it around I’m sure there’s people that will buy that edger especially with a real good engine like that one

I have an edger attachment for my Echo power head. So I probably wouldn't buy one. However, I also came across an abandoned power edger similar to this at the local dump. So I took it. I haven't fixed it yet, but I figured that since the amount of edging I need to do now has increase by about 3X, a power edger makes sense. Mine is not in as good a shape as this one, so I don't know if I'll be able to fix it or not. It has the same engine, but in the 3.5hp version. At the least, I'll keep the engine.

When the fuel goes bad, the carb suffers too as these have a little bowl like area where the fuel still sits. The other disadvantage is the stupid idea of using a pump. Gravity feed is all you need on most small walk behind engines and yet Briggs was notorious for using these pump designs that make the carbs fail regardless. I also don't like primers and there's nothing wrong with a conventional choke system. If you want a system that works as you describe where the carburetor is separate from the gas, look at anything Honda has produced in the last 20-30 years. They have a key that surpasses Briggs and that's a fuel cutoff valve. At the time you want to put your machine away, you turn the valve off while the engine is running and presto, the gas goes up the emulsion tube and is burned by the engine. If you can't wait, there's a drain plug on the carburetor. A special mention goes to Tecumseh horizontal shaft engines as they often had a fuel shutoff as well.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 2 ай бұрын
you do make a good point, and you'd have to ask a briggs engineer as to why the used the diaphragm and pump system over a gravity system. My only guess was cost, but who knows

A vertical shaft edger that is not easy to replace the belt the horizontal style is the best one to replace the belt is easier to do the belt replacement job on the only thing that those engines is not using All of the gas because of the level of the gas to the pick up tube as you said in this video on this machine
@Rein_Ciarfella
@Rein_Ciarfella 8 ай бұрын
I’ve found that the pickup tube bottom end sits in a depression in the tank. That depression is where I’ve found rust holes in two tanks so far, easily explained because that small amount of liquid never exits the tank at season’s end and probably is more water than fuel. Overall a bad design from what I’ve experienced so far. I much prefer OHV engines with tanks above the carb. Easier to adjust valve lash, easy to mount a fuel petcock and filter, not prone to tanks rusting out as much, etc.
