The future of truck market is going to look radically different as we transition from traditional ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles to full EVs. But in reality, the future is already here, thanks to these two truck manufacturers that are defining the new standard.
This is a very detailed Engineer's comparison of two important fully-electric trucks - one from a brand new car company called Rivian and other from an established automaker Ford. Specifically, David compares the quality, functionality, and driving characters of the Rivian R1T to the Ford F-150 Lightning. Which one does David likes better? We have both the Rivian R1T and Lariat Lightning. Two very different trucks with different purposes for us. Both are excellent and your reviews were spot on. Rivian is the fun truck, Lighting is the work truck. I wouldn't hesitate to take the Rivian off-road, but not as interested in doing the same with the Lightning. We have the more aggressive 21" tires on the Rivian, which makes is less of a quiet smooth ride compared to the Lightning. Hand-Free driving in Lightning is great, while Driver+ in Rivian is very good. Personally, the Rivian is my truck and I prefer it over my husband's Lightning mainly because I love the look, the stronger regen, UI, feel and smaller size. We honestly love both trucks equally for their designed purposes.

Nice comparison. Lightning is my first EV, but 7th F150. Really love it. Just started a new commute and the fuel savings are huge. Daily 200 miles round trip on single charge and recharge over night in driveway. Unbeatable compared to ICE as far as cost for my commute.

The lightning is so smooth. If ford can get the price down they would sell so many of them. It the perfect daily driver. If looking to buy an ev i would for sure look for 800v architecture. That going to be gen 2 products for most ev makers.

Good afternoon David. Great side by side comparison of the Ford Lightning and the Rivian. Several major things stood out to me as major advantages, and what sold me on the Ford Lightning. I would use the rear tow hitch to pull a very small light trailer to carry a one person boat to go fishing in local lakes. Since I am always looking for safety factors in a vehicle, I appreciate the very large rear bumper on the Lightning similar to the F-150. I also noticed when opening the rear tailgate, and allowing it to drop it was much quieter than the Rivian. I really liked the combination of the step up and handle assist. The front storage area with the curved dip makes it easy for me to load items. The way the backseat folds up so I can load my laptop and other items when driving throughout Texas is a huge plus. Another benefit for me is the standby power in the Lightning. With the frequent power outages where I live in Texas that will be such a major convenience to be able to power my low wattage consuming refrigerator, and a fan or small heater depending on the time of year. How does the Rivian suspension setup compare to the GX460? Im not ready to go electric yet for anything off pavement (I own a tesla MYP now for around town and highway trips) as there arent enough charge points out where I like to go, so ill stick with a GX for another 5 years or so, maybe longer, but Im curious about rivian vs lexus suspension and tuning as I love the way the GX rides.

IMO, the problem is in the way they have implemented regen. The solution isn't to eliminate it, it's to tweak it so it drives smoothly, like my Tesla does.

How does the Rivian not have a plug in electric outlet like the lightning ? Like the 7.2 Kw.

The Rivian actually has 2, 120Volt plugs. One in the truck bed and one in the gear tunnel. It also has a built in air compressor in the bed.

Great to look at, but they fall way short when it comes to performing what trucks are really made for . . . towing and hauling heavy loads. Range goes in the crapper. Thanks, but I’ll keep my 2nd gen Tundra, 5.7L V8, 6 speed tranny, 4.30 axle to do real truck stuff. Gas mileage is about 10 mpg towing my boat, but 38 gallon tank gives me adequate range.

I’m a dreamer , is hydrogen ever possible ? I need to be convinced that the country , world? Can handle the electrical demands going all electric . EG: fires may have started in California and Maui due to poor infrastructure . For me if we go small nuclear ok , it can be done . But then electricity prices are rising everyday , cost effective ? You’d be locked in . Nice trucks. Yes .

Great overview David, I prefer the colour of the lightning and the better ride but it is also more truck than I need. I question your title David 🙂. To me if solid state batteries gives these trucks usable towing range then maybe they are the future. If that does not happen we may need the hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell trucks for full functionality

@@stevenstrain283 I think they do, almost everything people buy does more than just the bare minimum (cars, food, housing, gadgets, etc.). We're all hooked and I don't think that's going to change. A vehicle is usually someone's 2nd biggest purchase so it's also an emotional/aspirational one as well (except for people that see them as appliances of course 😜 to get from A to B). If you put the gas version next to the EV one and the gas one meets needs (95% use cases) AND wants (5% use cases) vs the EV that only meets the needs and costs more/requires lifestyle changes (even minor ones) people will choose the gas one.

My lightning takes care of my towing needs, all my towing is local. I knew that towing would drop the range in half. Truck is awesome, glad I bought it!

Great looking trucks and a nice idea but… the weight of the trucks with those heavy batteries drastically reduces the load carrying capacity. Then of course how quickly the tires wearing out. All that coupled with America’s electric grid issues. No thank you.

Everything about the Rivian front is just wrong. Lifting heavy cargo in and out of the front trunk will cost you over time much back issues. The charge port is on the wrong side and has been problematic for some. The DRL’s are just odd like. It’s off-road manners need a ton of peddle to creep up and over stuff which is counter intuitive. It suffers from not having real mechanical lockers so wait for the two motor versions to see if it gets real rock crawling credentials. Both charge horribly slow for their battery size so you’ll need patience if your busy with your choice. Rivian has had the most technical charging challenges that still aren’t ironed out. The Ford hides its charging woes if you install a 100A breaker for the pro-power charger 80A. NACS isn’t going to fix either of these two. The Ford however, especially with the extended towing package that adds more cooling, doesn’t suffer heat issues during charging like the Rivian. If I was buying, and I won’t until they go to 800VDC architecture to solve heat issues during charging, hands down it’d be the Ford. It does being a work truck better than Rivian does at being the best off roader. For what most will put either thru they’ll be ok. You’ve done a great job with you’re analysis‼️ Thanks 28:40

Having been a Truck owner and User for over 30 years ... these Vehicles are still a Niche Novelty. Infrastructure for the use of a Full electric truck today is not practical. In the future ... maybe. There are too many limitations still.

The future will be when battery tech and infrastructure can give us the same experience as gas. Till then save the batteries for commuter cars where EV makes the most sense

Ford dropped the ball on the Lightning. They should’ve created a separate platform for the F150 Lighting vs using the previous Gen body.

The Lightning is not selling as expected (likely price increases turning buyers off). However, almost every R1T coming off the production line is sold.

@@smarticus6384 actually Rivian is manufacturing more cars than it’s delivering. It barely manufactured 14,000 cars in the 2nd quarter of 2023.
