My first car was a 1970 Dodge Challenger. My dad got it for me in the late 80s when I was 15. It had no motor, transmission, exhaust, radiator or shifter. We bought each item from other cars and put it together as a father/son project. I drove it through highschool and parked it in the garage when I left home. It hasn't ran in over 25 years, but I STILL have it.

First car: 1972 Bronco. Got it in 1980, the second I turned 16. When I was 14, I started saving money to get a TR-6. My dad talked me into getting something more practical. Back then, getting a car, as soon as you were old enough, was as essential as breathing. BTW, this weekend I used a 4x36 belt sander to do the tips of over 20 flat screwdrivers - what a revelation! Best tool for the job, by far. Thanks for the tip, Scoutcrafter!

My dads old 1964 Ford country sedan, station wagon. 6 passenger 289 cid V8 , 3 on the tree, no power steering, no power brakes, no air conditioning, just a heater, Mom and dad bought me the fenders, they were holy. I did the body work and painted it at my buddies shop. I took my driving test in my sister 1964 VW bug, another stick shift, what a blast to drive!

In 1982 my parents gave me their 1975 Ford F250 3/4 ton truck. Two gas tanks. When I started driving gas went over $1 per gallon. End of the world. The first car I bought was a Ford 2 door LTD, forget the year, but it was old, but beautiful. The second car I bought was a 1970 Ford Tarino. No seatbelts. That car would fly. I am lucky to be alive.

1959 Pontiac Bonneville. That car rode like a dream. It would pass everything but a gas station. But, premium was only 27 cents a gallon so it didn't really matter.

1968 Camaro. I got it from my dad for paying the small remaining balance on the loan. Nice car for a 24 year-old kid. Handled well, lots of fun to drive with Chevy small block reliability. It is responsible for one of my best tool values ever because I bought a Hanson Hawk electronic tuneup set for ignition and electrical testing. It paid for itself the first time I used it. Tuneups (breaker points in those days) started to lose their edge at about 11,000 to 12,000 miles, so I always looked forward to tuneup time because you could tell the performance difference after you did the work. Gave it to my sister at 189,000 miles but still have my ignition tester. Thank you for the useful vise quick tip.

1952 Ford F-1 pickup. Candy red. Flathead V-8 replaced with a 292 Y block from a 57 T-bird stock car. Side pipes under oak running boards. Oh what a sound. Chrome MT slots with some raised letter fat 50's or 60's. Original 3 on the tree. Only had a fiberglass chair for a driver seat until it was ready for the road (still have the chair, of course). I worked on it almost every day after school from age 15 until I could drive it at 17. Happy to say that a buddy of mine still has it and is one of his daily drivers. I had a1976 Ford F250 right around the same time.

I am "much" older than you and my first and second cars are from and "earlier" age. First car was a 1939 Plymouth DeLuxe that I had to rebuild the motor so my dad would give it to me. Had help from both him and his mechanic. Second car was a 1933 Buick with dual sidemount spare tires and mechanical brakes. I could hold my whole highschool football team. The trunk was a "real" trunk mounted on the back bumper. My main hs car was a 40 Ford convertible that I wish I had today. Like the haircut. Allan

Hey John, my first car was a '68 Plymouth Road Runner hard top. 383 4 speed. Didn't have an engine, had to build one and drop it in. Also came from a blue collar family. We would hang out in parking lots and show off our cars. Mostly 60s models, lot of fun. If the police chased us off we would just move across the street to another parking lot. Yeah kids don't work on cars much anymore. It's a shame. Those Cougars were really cool with the hidden headlights. And not as common as the Mustang. Great video as usual! 🚘

I graduated from that to a 1978 280Z which is the car that I met my first wife with, man do I remember the times spending Fridays and Saturday night cleaning and cruising the blvd what times, you are right the kids nowadays will never know the fun of cruising up and back the blvd for hours on time. My first car had to have been one of the most underpowered and uninspired designs in car history - a secondhand Pontiac T1000. I delivered a lot of news papers and bagged many groceries to buy that fantastic bit of freedom! Ha! ...and like you, I kept it cherry clean inside and out. ...something everyone commented on. It wasn't much, but at that time, I was so happy with those wheels. ...meant everything! The scissor restoration projects you've been doing reminds me of my mom. One of her many talents was as a seamstress, and she always had beautiful scissors. ...which were only for cutting material! I remember the sound they made and watching the precise cuts she could pull off because they were so sharp. ...and thinking someday I would have my own scissors like that. Ha! If she were alive, she'd appreciate your reverence for scissors. That was her thing too! Anyway, thanks for sharing your fun.

My first car was actually a truck. It was a 1966 GMC, inline 6, 3 speed on the column (3 on the tree) and had an oak slat bed. I bought it in 1997, I was 15. Cost me $300 which was a lot for me as I never got allowance nor was I paid working in my family’s business. It was a farm truck it’s entire life and had 36,000 original miles on it. It needed some work, but that was some of the most fun I’ve had. I’d put models together for fun prior to that and to step up to a life sized model was incredible. Wish I still had it. My father forced me to sell it after graduation as the plan was I was going to be away at college and he didn’t want to hold it for me. If there is ever a day I see it again and the VIN matches my wife is going to have to accept that I’m buying it.

ScoutCrafter, you nailed it on first cars when you said “we loved them because they meant freedom.” Loved my car, but honestly it proved to be junk - a 1978 Honda Accord. Japanese manufacturers hadn’t figured out that Americans put salt on the roads in winter, and it proved to become a serious rust bucket. And the doors latches broke, I couldn’t afford the parts, and drove for a year with coat hangers through the interior handles to keep the doors closed (we had to enter through the rear hatch!). But, God I loved that car!

1976 Chevrolet Monza was my first car. Make sure you mention how to bring the tips back together if they don’t cut all the way to the end. (grind the nub between the two handles) Good stuff John!

My first car was a 1990 Subaru Legacy, bought with my hard-earned pizza shop money in 1996 with 46k miles. It was eventually donated to a local automotive school in 2008 with 270k miles, having only replaced the transmission once along with expected replacements (battery/alternator, tires, brakes, etc.). It would occasionally catch on fire toward the end, but still got me from A to B and had enough room in the back seat to... work.

Mine was a 1966 Dodge Charger that I got from my cousin. My first truck was my grandpa's 1968 Ford F250 with only 38,000 miles. I traded it for my cousin's 66 Charger.

I got my first car in 1966 from a friends sister. It was a 1955 English Ford Anglia. I paid $6.00 for it paying her two payments of $3.00 I bought several more Anglia's over the years. Some for driving and some for parts cars. Growing up in that time frame, many old cars could be had for free. In the early 1970's when I got a job, I bought many 55 thru 57 Chevys and Fords. My good friend of 53 years started a wrecking yard at 11 years old in 1953 and still runs it today going on 68 years. He only sells antique car and truck parts. Many of the cars I have had I got from him. My best one was a one owner clean rust free Calif 1956 Chevy sedan that I owned for 34 years until I got sick and had to sell it.

My first ride was a 1972 Ford Ranchero with a 351 Cleveland. Loved it but got tired of all the rust holes and things getting wet inside when it rained. Can't wait for the SC Challenge!

Oh man I was just reminded a friend's first car in high school was a Crappy Old Chevette.....One day at lunch me and another friend spent our entire lunchtime plastering his car with stickers......(they were about one to two inch stickers like they use in a party store, some round, some square with things like a Sale Price, a Soda Name or a Beer Brand printed on them).....By time we got done that car was covered top to bottom with stickers including many "Naughty" words spelled out with the stickers........At the end of the day the whole school was Honking, Pointing & Laughing as he was leaving the parking lot that day....We just sat there, watched and loved ever minute of it.........It took him all the next day to remove all those stickers, he missed that whole next day of school removing them........LOL I'm dying laughing right now just thinking about it !!

My first car was a 1956 Willys Jeep CJ-5. It had a little 4cyl engine 75 horsepower. Top speed was around 50 mph. Greatest part was it had a vinyl removable top. Summer was great. Top down, windshield folded over the hood. It always started hard because of the 6 volt system. Then I met the love of my life, and she didn't share my enthusiasm about the Jeep. Soon after I sold the Jeep and purchased a new 1971 Dodge Demon 340. That was a fast, strong running car. $3200 and I floated a three year loan. Then came the draft and I had to sell it because I had nowhere to store it. When I came back from overseas I had no car and no girlfriend. Oh well. I miss my Demon and my little hippy chick.

A 1956 plymouth savoy, I was one of the only kids in high school with a car. it usually needed to be pushed to be started, the old pop the cutch method. I bought that car and many others from Dibatestas junk yard for 25.00. Those were the days. You could just write up a bill of and you were good for another week. I still love old cars and trucks.

1967 ford falcon SS GT robin egg blue. Small block V6 with 2 -2 barrel carburators that looked like army helmet air cleaners they were sitting on a raised intake manifold at 45 degrees. It was scary fast for a 16 year old. And it got sold in less than 2 years. The coolest thing to me besides the engine.. was the swing down windows they tilted and dropped into door instead of rolled down. It was a B-GAS streeter. It had the original decals on rear fender and all the windows. It was 8K$ belonged to a old guy who who ordered it custom as a B-GAS car it's still painful to me I was too childish to understand or be responsible. Also I liked it had no heater or AC
