In this video we will be at last arriving upon the island of Shikoku, to discuss the famous Chosokabe clan! The Chosokabe are one of the most well known names of the Sengoku Jidai, yet most people often forget about the fascinating tale of their ambitious rise and tragic fall.

It's quite interesting that first the Chosokabe sided with the Tokugawa against the Toyotomi proceeded to lose most of their land. Then side with the Toyotomi against the Tokugawa and then lose all of their remaining land.

I guess the dead of motochika and nobuchika is a big deal in a sense they shared similar fate to the miyoshi clan who kind of preceded them in being the major power of shikoku (east at least) losing leaders and heirs and gradual decline

Probably why the Tosa were so dead set on the Imperials winning during the Boshin war. I love how the old rivalries during the sengoku period translated so well to the boshin war

About Motochika himself, it is said that he had a somewhat femenine appearence as a young boy, so people called him "Little Princess". When he grew up, it is said he was one of the most handsome man of the era, a "bishounen". No doubt why fiction tend to portray him sometimes so stylishly!

These guys are one of those clans that, by the end of Sengoku Jidai, got completely shafted by life so hard that you can't help but feel bad for them. First the Toyotomi swooped in and took all their shit after Motochika finally managed to consolidate his turf. Then Motochika lost his son and heir at Kyushu because somebody else fucked up. Then at Sekigahara they had their army there ready to finally win, but couldn't do anything because Terumoto shat the bed and in the end everybody just went home and got their lands taken. It almost looks like a tragic comedy.

It occurred to me that being an isolated island on the south side of Honshu, they were protected from most of the turmoil of the Sengoku Jidae and the Mongol invasions. Their military culture is almost a picture into pre-Mongol invasion Japan, when there were no Ashigaru, only small bands of warriors, and rudimentary equipment.

I remember what Motochika Chōsokabe said I think as a quote from Samurai Warriors 2: Xtreme Legends, specifically chapter 1, Annexation of Shikoku. “If destiny dictates that I follow the others who have been swallowed up, then I will go… But they will remember my name…”

According to another video on KZfaq by "the history man", during the bakumatsu, many of the goshi (low-ranking samurai) of tosa who opposed the shogunate, disobeying their domain's official kobu-gattai policy, were said to be from the families which used to serve the chosokabe. These samurais were called goshi because of their families' service to chosokabe and were subjected to harsh treatment by the ruling yamanouchi clan. So maybe despite chosokabe's downfall, after 2 centuries, they were avenged, although avenging them may not be the primary motive of those samurai who worked to overthrow the bakufu and later many of the high-ranking samurai joined them as well.

If you wondered what happened and what does Motochika's 2nd and 3rd son doing during these turbulent times is as followed: The secondborn,named Chikakazu was later adopted into the Kagawa clan of Sanuki,a Jitto of western Sanuki province as part of peace settlement when the Chosokabe invaded Sanuki province,he thus reside in Amagiri castle in Western Sanuki province. When the Hashiba invaded Shikoku island and won,the Kagawa and by extension Chikakazu was stripped from their power and Chikakazu sent to Yamato-Koriyama castle as hostage to Hideyoshi's half brother Hidenaga in 1585. A year later he returned to Oko castle and died soon after,his cause of death are unclear. Either by illness,suicide by self-enforced fasting in consideration for smoother transition of power for his younger brother Morichika,or he was poisoned by Morichika himself (i kinda leaned towards this considering the fate that befall the 3rd born son,which we'll get to it) Moving on to the 3rdborn son,Chikatada. He shared the same fate as Chikakazu before: being adopted into another clan to solidify Chosokabe power. Chikatada was adopted into the Tsuno clan,a wealthy gozoku clan from Tosa. Think of them like the Ikoma to the Oda clan,wealthy mercantile clan that bankrolled their expansion. Similarly,in 1585 as part of peace deal he too was taken as hostage by Hideyoshi and placed him under the watch of Takatora Todo in Wakayama,Kii province. When the succession crises happened, Chikatada chance got dashed when a retainer of Chosokabe,Chikanao Hisatake slander him due to Chikatada close relationship with Takatora Todo,whom Chikatada had spent time as hostage to the Todo and Motochika agreed with Hisatake's assessment. when Motochika died in 1599,Morichika imprisoned Chikatada. A year later after Morichika defeat at Sekigahara,Chikatada wrote and sent apology letter to Ii Naomasa,Tokugawa's retainer, for his younger brother's misjudgement of siding with Ishida Mitsunari during Sekigahara. hoping his younger brother and his whole clan as a whole would get leniency from Ieyasu. It didn't work. after this got found out he was ordered to be executed by Morichika because Chikanao Hisatake (yes that guy again,he got serious beef with Chikatada,but i can't find any info about why he does, unfortunately) thought this letter was a treacherous conspiracy of Chikatada and the Todo clan conspiring with one another to get one half of Tosa province for themselves and managed to convince Morichika to gave the order. Eventually,Chosokabe stripped from their Tosa province powerbase by the victorious Tokugawa regime (the province then given to the Yamauchi clan) forcing Morichika and the remnants of his loyal retainers into hiding or becoming ronin,then they resurfaced again during the sieges of Osaka,opposing the Tokugawa. it is said it really apalled Ieyasu so bad that Morichika has it in him to kill his own brother that Ieyasu decided to eventually didn't spare Morichika in the end when he got captured during the Siege of Osaka.

one thing not everybody know is the current last person who confirm a descent of chosokabe is chosokabe tomochika, who is chosokabe nobuchika's young brother's bloodline, he wrote a book called 絶家を思う(the thinking about a super precious clan will not exist soon), the name chosokabe is the most rare name in all Japanese name, only 20 people in all Japan's population have this name, there will be no chosokabe in the future!

While viewing the artist"s depictions of Samurai during the Sengoku period with photographs of Samurai from the Edo period, I am struck by the appearance of poverty in the Edo period. True, no "random sampling" was conducted, but I would expect that to the Edo Samurai would have donned their finest clothes for the photographs.

A Japanese TV show about Mitsuhide`s attack on Nobunaga at Hannoji had 6 historians debate his motives. None thought Nobunaga`s abuse of Mitsuhide was a reason (ie, Nobunaga treated everybody pretty roughly and it was in the lord`s assumed rights to do so). But one of the reasons that got widespread support was the Oda, on the eve of Hannoji, were to have a 20,000 man army land on Shikoku and side with one faction (Sogo or Chosokabe). Mitsuhide was in charge of negotiations with the Chosokabe and Hideyoshi with the Sogo. In the end Nobunaga chose the Sogo (obviously with Hannoji happening the invasion did not take place).... So it makes sense that Motochika would not be a Hideyoshi fan

Given that Qin Shi Huang lived and died about 700 years before Japan has any reliable records and plenty of scribes and monks from China and Korea moved to Japan in the Yayoi thru Asuka periods to fill skilled labor roles in the court its' not the most outlandish thing to suggest. But it would be impossible to verify. 秦氏 - Hata Clan is literally the same character as that used for the Qin Dynasty and the story (tho placed firmly in the "we are just making shit up" period of Japanese history) is that Yuzuki no kimi came from the mainland in the reign of Emperor Ojin and that he was a descendant of the Qin Dynasty.

There's actually a number of Japanese clans that claim descent from monarchs and nobility from China and Korea, including the Ōuchi and Sue (who claim descent from Prince Imseong of Baekje), as well as the Akizuki, Sakanoue, and Tamura (who claim descent from Emperor Ling of Han). Although it was compiled before samurai came into existence, the Shinsen Shōjiroku, a registry of clans in the Kinai region completed in 815, labels 326 of the 1,182 clans included as being of foreign descent. That being said, it seems most of the clans who claim descent from continental Asia were court nobles rather than samurai.
@shinsenshogun900
@shinsenshogun900 2 жыл бұрын
These samurai warrior elite clans surely would derive themselves from rural magnates, displaced spare Japanese imperial princes, and descendants of deposed continental dynasties & evicted royal nobilities. If some of the clans mentioned here are truly descended from the 3rd to the last Emperor of the Han that spent most of his personal treasury on quelling a major popular cultist rebellion, then who among his children, born from different mothers, would the clans call their ancestors to? (Not a happy life for Emperor Ling’s children after he unceremoniously passed away in his thirties, four years after silencing a phenomenal event with his wealth and talented officers)
@Akimittsun
@Akimittsun 2 жыл бұрын
@@shinsenshogun900 The clans claiming descent from Emperor Ling are all branches of the Yamato no Aya clan which was supposed founded by a great-grandson of Emperor Ling called Achi no Omi, who came to Japan with his son in 289, according to the Nihon Shoki. As for which of Emperor Ling's sons they claim descent from, it really could only be his second son, Emperor Xian, since his oldest son was only about 13 or 14 when he was killed and had no recorded children.
