When i was a toddler, i was tortured by repeated nightmares. Nearly all of them about being chased by a samurai, who then catches me, and cuts of my toes one by one. To this day, i have no idea where that came from - a movie, story, no idea.

Truth is love, who is the unchanging progenitor of life (God) that comes from the heart; unchanging progenitor of life (God); that which empowers (breathes life) to our mind/heart/soul; imagination from the subconscious; truth, our system of believes: believe system: way of reasoning/understanding

I think the movie Kagemusha had a nice depiction of 3 shinobi who report to Oda and Tokugawa, trying to find out whether Shingen is really dead or what's going on with the Takeda. They could sneak around in the wilderness a bit or blend into town as commoners but their eyes on the ground could be invaluable to the warlords.

Please, for the Kami's sake, Ubisoft, for so many reasons, don't have Yasuke betray Nobunaga and go Ronin mode. Please. Let us have a cool black samurai, and don't portray Yasuke like that. I really hope they don't bungle this

Most female samurai were wives of no longer alive samurai with sons too young to take charge, body or town guards, they proved to be an amazing strategist, or were a form of field medic.

I would caution the Japanese against attacking their own culture. Although thoughtful review of perceptions is necessary, it can very quickly become an act of murder. Are we better off with people believing their ancestors valued honour and discipline or "knowing" they were inhuman brutes? Many cultures are walking hollowed out corpses because they "learned" the latter. At least leave some of your myths intact. They're more important than we can fathom.

Samurai's main weapon is katana. The source of the theory that katana is not samurai's main weapon is Masaya Suzuki's book Katana to Kubitori published in 2000. Masaya Suzuki is a civil servant and is not a historian and does not have a degree. His book is not an academic book, with a lot of speculation and few primary sources. Many errors in his theory have been pointed out by qualified historians. In Japan, it was customary to keep records of soldiers' injuries and causes of death on the battlefield. Historian Thomas D. Conlan created statistical data from many records. His statistics conclude that katana and spears cause more blade kills, and bows and arrows cause more injuries. The period when spears were prevalent on Japanese battlefields was from the late Sengoku period (around 1540) to the peace after Genna era (1615). Katana was also effective against polearms. That is why China, Mongolia, Korea, and Southeast Asia imported katana from Japan after the 10th century. The "wo" in the name of the sword wodao, which became mainstream in Asia, means Japanese style.

It's a shame that these topics attract a specific crowd of very vile "online bushido warriors" that are bitter and have nothing nice or smart to say, but think they're the authority on everything.

Notice how in Yakuza 3, the head taking by Mine (took Kanda's head) is viewed as gruesome and dishonorable. Mine has these skewed ideas of power and chivalry and Kiryu knows that true power and honor lies in mercy and empathy. Overcoming your own feelings of anger and greed is the true virtue. Be like Kiryu.

Hey if I may ask what’s the most accurate samurai game you’ve seen in how it depicts the culture? I tried to get into ghost of Tsushima, but couldn’t get past the plot itself being based on nonsense bushido principles.

Feels like Ubisoft just taunting "he's real, can't get mad.. he's real, can't get mad🤪" While most gaming journalists also cannot held the urge to look superior and educated on this situation by arguing about "umm actually, he is real🤓" (even tho feels like it's a well known fun fact already) And we just forget about how absurd their prices are

I mean it's the same in all societies. Those that came before us may have been killers, slavers, rapists and thieves however there should be some respect from us now anyways since without them we do not exist. In this way we create stories that make hero's of human people.

What really gets me about the comments on this post, is all the folks determining what it takes to be considered Samurai. Ive read that he wasnt trained as a samurai, didnt have a last name, was a novelty, and all other manner of things. If any of you read Japanese you would be able to read the first hand accounts of the man in 5 different works, I believe 3 are letters, and a few are various official documents. Do you have any idea how many documents the average samurai had about them? Ill give you a hint, the average is less than 1. You would also see that the words used to describe a lot of the mans life, including his stipend, the land granted to him, and even his actions as a warrior were all used to describe nobility.... Some of yall just want to go on about your culture wars. Get over it. Its a game. ALSO AC.... the first game was about the fall of a guild of assassins correct? From the mid east, notorious for their forts and being a key player in the region? Well in the game their fort is toppled by Christian Crusaders, which apparently ended their order. In the real world, it was the task of the mongols. Not the crusaders. But I dont see you bunch of racist going on about historically inaccurate that is.

Impressive series. My only complaint > these 'anime'-sque portraits of the daymios are terrible. For some of them I assume we have no other portraits, but Nobunaga have at least several contemporary depictions ( bald with small mustaches ) and even a portrait made by a Westerner.

So basically these guys are all either honorless scumbags or were betrayed by the honorless scumbags they faithfully served. And note how Yukimura is actually the exception that proves the rule. That's why he's so loved.
