I was in the stands, directly behind the camera at Canadians when Emy Carignan fell on the warmup. The ENTIRE rink gasped and froze where we were. It was scary. I’m confused though, cause Emy looked terrified before they skated. She was shaking her head ‘no’ as they called out their names for the pair to start. Idk who it was, but anyone in the building could’ve seen that she was not the one who wanted her to “push through.” It’s JUST skating, people.

I guess the same could be said about the United States (although we do have two ice dance teams and Nathan Chen). My moment of the week....this video. Dave and Jonathan, you just keep getting better and better. 1:24:13.....so cute the way you have your hands on your chests at the same time while discussing the junior pairs. Adorable! Schindler’s List + Bells of Moscow + Hatikva was a combination done first in “The Movie Album” by John Bayless where he had many different combinations of classical pieces with movie themes. I’m pretty sure he just put pieces together that sounded well.

Well Philippe Candeloro gave an interview to Le Parisien and said Morgan Cipres seems to have admitted to the facts by apologizing - and this will follow Morgan's career for a very long time. Regarding the junior pairs fall. There were a few comments on Twitter saying maybe she didn’t feel the pain because of adrenaline or whatever and I can understand the from her perspective however where was an adult coach/official/doctor/parent to say she should not be competing. On the livestream Ted mentioned she got checked before skating then later they said she had a broken write and kneecap. Who checked her and how did they miss that? There are a lot of questions Skate Canada needs to answer.

I always have thought if Keegan wanted to actually elevate his skating he would have moved to Etown or gta to train in a structured and high level way. He has pretty solid roots to where he lives so it would be a huge sacrifice that I don't think he would trade it for success he may or may not get. I really respect him because he's so genuine but I also would love to see him succeed in this sport whether it's worlds or even within Canada. Maybe he doesn't need to move but get more structure and outside direction in a more consistent way. Man I just wish the best for him really.

Gabby's wrap on her lutz and flip has become so atrocious; her ankles had to have been at least a foot apart on those jumps. She's never had great technique, especially on her 3lz and 3f, but was able to rotate them because of how much height she could get, but her skating skills and technique have really deteriorated since Pyeongchang. Her timing was so off here too - I'm glad Tracy explained that her main problem was that she was jumping with her shoulders and starting to rotate before picking, and that her issues were significantly more mental than physical. I feel for her because her mental health is obviously still very fragile, and agree with you guys that she definitely needs to take some real time off, think about if she really wants to keep skating, ACTUALLY stay off social media for a decent period of time, maybe even do what Gracie did and go into residential treatment if Skate Canada will pay for it. I think her parents are part of the problem, especially her dad managing her off-ice training. I also hope Slipchuck/Skate Canada realize that sending her to Worlds/any other major competition for the foreseeable future is a terrible idea. Canada is very likely to lose their 2nd ladies' spot anyway, but it would be cruel to put that pressure on Gabby's shoulders.

@@kate-rd2uk Psychological care is not covered under Canadian healthcare but psychiatric treatment is covered. She probably has good private health coverage that could accommodate some sort of in-treatment facility but I think she thinks she doesn't need it and can just get back to it. She's getting further and further away from reality. It's bad enough it's happening but they are like putting it on display, which is making her more whacky on social media

But she doesn't even view what she does as a problem. She likes getting attention from her over edited Instagram posts. She needs to get off of it but she won't, she doesn't really know how bad her problem is. Even at skate canada this year she was so delusional on her skate went when she was shocked at her scores, it's like Gabby come back to the real world your skate at skate canada was not competitive and your skate here sucked because you have issues that you are not seeking treatment for and this a short break will solve.
@nrose7345

Gabby's skating skills and technique are likely deteriorating because she's no longer skating at TCC. There she not just had Lee Barkell but also Tracy, Brian and a slew of other coaches readily available to push her on her SS and also to assist her with any jump issues she was having.

Bell Center is always expensive! When I went to McGill we had to go to Ontario to watch hockey live because the price at home in MTL was absurd. The event organisers are also fully aware that they can charge what they like for any event Yuzuru Hanyu is likely to be at because he has enough fans willing to shell out thousands of dollars to fill the seats. ETA: Montreal in March? Slushy, muddy, cold nights, rainy days, everything thawing and refreezing overnight again and again each day. Gorgeous on a good day. I love Montreal but March is the worst month of the year there.

I think there should be a Pan-american skating competition. That way, USA and Canada can have a competition between nationals, olympics (or worlds), and can not have nationals be the end all be all. Four continents in Asia is too far away with a massive time difference.

Let's talk about the costumes of the men's medalists. Sandovsky had the best costume by far. Nguyen looked like he was ready for a business meeting with the tie and belt. Messing's costume was much better than last year's when he wore a SWEATER VEST (I believe) and was on his way to a day shift at the library. I know it's horrible to criticize people's costumes but I am adamant that there should be a standard uniform for major competitions. This is an athletic sport! You wouldn't see gymnasts wearing some of this stuff! Katarina Witt's short program outfit, for example, at the '88 Olympics also bothered me because it was better suited for an exhibition program. There is a time and place for different outfits. I guess I just have strict opinions on this, haha.

The Lucky Charms bit was hilarious. Can't say I agree though with Dave's praise of Keegan's FS. While I suppose it's possible to imagine a good program to GAR's "September Rain, this one is not it. It's just a series of jumps, spins and "cool" moves that are being performed while some rock music is playing in the background. I get the same vibe from the SP, which is why even though I'm sick to death of routines inspired by Charlie Chaplin I still infinitely prefer this to anything Keegan has done this season.

Roman's free program music is theme from Schindler's List/Prelude in C-Sharp Minor/Hatikvah performed by John Bayless. Hatikvah - national anthem of Israel is an adaptation of Prokofiev's Bell's of Moscow which is just a different name for Prelude in C-Sharp Minor. I hope it answers Jonathan's question about connection between Schindler's list and Bell's of Moscow. Connection is - national anthem of Israel.

You were more positive about Nationals than I was, and I'm Canadian lol. Too many performances were disappointing but that's good drama unto itself. As for Kaiya, the girl does have star quality and her parents are tiny (I believe) so puberty might not hit her hard. If she can grow enough to get GoE and have her programs mature a little as you would expect with a 13yo, she'll go to Beijing - even as our one entry.

I don't know about her parents, but the fact that she's still that tiny when she's almost 14, for a girl, suggests we're looking at somebody who's going to grow to maybe a Satoko-level height as opposed to a Kaetlyn, let alone Maria Sotskova.

Just saying... Nic Nadeau is a lefty (he lands jumps on his left foot). So for pair skating, he would have to skate with Kaitlyn Osmond or with Carolina Kostner (sorry for my bad spelling, I’m doing my best here!) I would enjoy that, but I doubt it’s gonna happen 😉

LuChuck struggled with their throws. In my opinion, the first throw of the long was not just Lubov's fault. The torque and speed of revolution to the naked eye looked as quick as usual, and her core was strong. But she didn't complete the revolution. It looked like she was thrown across the ice instead of up. Lubov's arabesques are so strong, she can afford the higher throw, and still have a long flow out. I think both of them need to accept the weight off this mistake.

As someone who would fancy myself a sports reporter (in another life) I am ashamed to say, I can't find my original source for the following. BUT.... apparently Skate Canada has already named Kirsten and Michael to the World team, with Ev/Trennnnnnnnnnnnt and LuChuck fighting it out at 4CC. Piper and Paul AND Marjorie and Zack are also already named to the team. They will decide on the CanaDanes and SouFirus after 4CC. In both the men's and women's, decisions will be made after 4CC. I agree with your opinion that LuChuck have more important skating, and they are the team I want to excel more than all of the others,...but you have to give credit to Ev/Trennnnnnnnt for the incredible improvement. Yes, I agree with all of your critiques, but this is already significant improvement in the past year. They COULD be a third team in Beijing, but they could also be around for 2026 AND 2030. Let's not give up on them. I appreciate that Kirsten repeatedly made sure that she acknowledged Michael's cleaner skates, but it really bugs me when they publicly air their disappointment after weaker skates. She needs to class it up. It is hard to root for KMT when she chastises her partner who we all know is fully aware he messed up. The ice is no place to shame. NOW, ask me about me feelings about Charlie. He seems like he could be a total bully, and I will not have that in the teams I cheer for.

@@zuzanka1981 even as adults, elite athletes typically don't make safe decisions in this type of situation, they always want to push through pain in order to compete/perform ( like after the collision at cup of China for Yuzuru, that wasn't a smart decision). That's when the coaching team and the medical staff are supposed to step up and protect the athletes. Competing with a sprained ankle at Worlds/Euros ... is fine ( not ideal but when you get to that level you're going to have some minor injuries /soreness... at some point ). Competing with broken knee cap, broken wrist (for pairs when you have lifts... that’s dangerous), possible concussion, that's a big NO, especially as junior, at national competition, there's no point and all you can get is making it worse.

Lajoie and Lagha present a challenge to the skating fan. I enjoyed them more last season, but with some attention and repeated views of their skates this year, they truly are getting stronger in all areas. So why do I enjoy them less, this season? I really don't like the material, for one. That can change. I find them very sharp and athletic, but I feel THAT might be the problem. A heightened energy and strong moves are only purposeful if they add to the aesthetic. As a choreographer and former dancer, I feel like their extensions and sharp moves don't work with the music but rather, against. (timing wise). It feels like each strong hit is either ahead of or ' a catch up' to the music, making it look cumbersome instead of sharp. And the choreography needs to give them a chance (especially her) to drop the shoulders and show a longer line. Marjorie has a shorter neck and high shoulders to begin with. The highly charged "Dance at the Gym" and the frenetic approach to the Queen truncate the body. They need to pick material where the attention to artistry is also a pedagogic aid in improving shortcomings like their line. I'm rooting for this team as well. Their professionalism and success on the junior grand prix circuit already have given them an advance that they can build upon. Please, just let them grow with better material.

Then watch the grand prix final for the best few skaters, worlds means everyone should get the opportunity to send the best skater or best 3. Like the Olympics you have to qualify the best of each country. It isn't an open competition. The only down side is some countries are limited and the only country right now in that situation is Russian ladies. Everyone else doesn't stand a chance to topple those 3.

Sad that my favorite male skater, Stephen Gogolev, had to withdraw during the competition. Also, I was a bit glad that Rod Black was brought up at the beginning of this commentary because I also find him annoying. For example, when Gogolev had his breakthrough short program at last year's Canadian nationals, Rod says something like, "We haven't seen something like this in a long tiiyyyyiiiyyymmmeee". And the way he draws out "time" annoys me a lot...sorry Rod, can't help it!

Wow, Roman Sadovsky! I just watched the Russian Natls *groan* men (boys). They have no one like this, not even close. They are all very young with no transitions (why can 14yr old girls have them but not guys?) and NO musicality, except the tiny 14yo guy. SO wonderful to see a mature, TALL skater with the complete package, rough as it may have been. No matter what he does, I enjoy watching him do more than merely pile on the GOEs AND with interesting footwork. Disclaimer: I am not Canadian.
