I've never thought that Nathan doesn't feel things, but rather it reflects his personality. He's quiet, introspective, reserved. He's that way when interviewed too. He doesn't toot his own horn and he's just laid back. A very different personality than a Yuzu who is right out there.

Probably one of the most exciting and emotional ladies event in recent memory. Mariah Bell, Bradie Tennell, Alysa Liu, Gracie Gold, Amber Glenn, and so many others had performances that captivated the audience and had many in tears. The atmosphere in the arena was electrifying and although it may seem like there were a lot of empty seats on TV, the Short was 3/4 full and the Free was a near sell out.

I haven't seen it yet (country restrictions on youtube - dammit) but I saw her blow it out the park at one of the grand prix earlier this year, and she was outstanding. So happy for her.
@Llk327

I took my 11 year old with me to Greensboro to watch the ladies short. She really wanted to see Alysa Liu. However, after watching her in person she was very underwhelmed. She said "I didn't realize how slow she was compared to the other skaters and how small her jumps are." The lack of speed going in and out of many of her jumps. Even as a former skater only doing doubles, my couch would NEVER let us slow down before a jump. That was a huge no. Alysa slows down and actually loses speed. This is something that should have been taught from the beginning. Does anyone think she would benefit from a coaching change? Her coach seems super sweet and supportive but there are so many bad habits, which are tough to go back and change. My daughter compared it to gymnastics. She said "That would be like my coach having me do a back handspring step out on beam without being able to do a good one on the floor first." She needs to get more speed going into her jumps to get more lift. I think going back and working on the basics would help her a lot. She's a very talented girl, but continuing to overscore her and reward her at the senior level for junior level skating is so wrong (and not her fault by any means). I knew Alysa was slow across the ice, but seeing it Thursday night in person really emphasized it, especially compared to Bradie, Amber and Mariah. I hope her coach REALLY works on improving the quality of her skating. She is a talented girl and has so much potential.

Laura Kersey I’ve seen her 3 times in person and what a difference a year makes. She may not yet have the speed of the other ladies, but she has the mind of a champion and does not let her programs falter. Also consider her small frame at 4’10” physically she doesn’t have the power of taller bigger girls like Bradie and Mariah. Her team knows exactly what she needs to work on and having Lori Nichol in the Kiss and Cry well that was a huge statement. Frank Carroll has talked about decreasing speed when you are first learning jumps (like the 3A and 4Lz which by the way have much more speed and transitions barely any telescoping now). If you go back and watch her programs from just a few months ago you can already see the astounding progression. I don’t want her to peak this year. I want to see it all come together by the Olympics. Your daughter is lucky that she got to see a future star. She may not have impressed her but she is still our best and probably only hope against the Russian and Korean girls.
@Bambi469
@Bambi469 4 жыл бұрын
Laura Kersey I fully agree with Christiana. I have been following Alysa for some time now and compare this to when Trusova, and even sometimes Shcherbakova herself, slows down before her quads. Even Kostornaia during this recent European championship had to slow down on one of her 3A. and she is 16 years old, unlike Alysa. I'm not saying by any means that this technique is okay, but rather that in time I know this will change. Falling from a quad can be quite disastrous and even Nathan had surgery after a bad landing. These girls need to keep nailing the correct way of taking off and progressively add speed to their jumps (same as when Hanyu started learning his quad arsenal). Mariah and Bradie are amazing, but I can't compare them to Alysa who is learning and trying things that are revolutionary while still being cautious about her health. I know Alysa will be impressing judges in worlds and hopefully during the Olympics as well.

My daughter WAS impressed with her talent. I think everyone should be. She IS very talented and clearly has a hard work ethic and mentally tough, which is a wonderful combination for success. It was just very apparent compared to the other ladies she is still very much a junior skater and she received WAY too high GEOs and PCSs in this SENIOR competition. And there is absolutely NO comparison between Kostornaia's triple axel and Alysa's. Actually, Alysa should watch Kostornaia's. Kostornaia is only an inch taller than Alysa so having a small frame is not an excuse. Whether you are 4'10" or 5'8", you can still have good technique and good skating skills. If this was Junior Nationals, I would say her skating skills are on par. However, this was senior nationals and it really stands out when you are watching her out there with those other senior ladies. And I totally agree with Dave with those PCSs being WAY too high.

Totally agree with Jonathan’s moments of the week. Torgashev was so impressive. The birds looked like part of the costume up close, in my opinion. The energy in the arena when Mariah skates was incredible and the only thing I could compare it to was when Ashley won silver. Everyone was on the edge of their seat and holding their breath. Amazing.

I feel like Madison and Zach are so arrogant that even Marie France can’t not tolerate it any more so she just does not care any more. She know she need to choose one more team for Olympic medal apart from G&G and probably she is betting on Chock and Bates. I would bring this free dance back during 2021-2022 season and they will have a good chance for an Olympic medal. As for Hubble may be she should move to marina, I think marina would make anything to make them medal

Pretty much my only issue with Dave in these videos is he throws out these secrets like were supposed to know when he knows we don't and he's doing it to throw it in our faces that he's an insider and were not. I am almost always 100% pro Dave in these videos but this isn't the first time he has done that and he won't answer you when you ask what he meant.

I miss 2016/17 and 2017/18 Madi & Zach so SO much. When they were chasing the pack they seemed fresh and exciting but they seemed to have stalled. I think they don't quite know how to be front runners. I adore them, their skill and their chemistry is top notch but they need better programs and a reality check. Madi & Evan on the other hand are fantastic this season, they have a new lease of life and Montreal really suits them. I'm very happy for them.

Gracie is still in recovery, eating disorder recovery normally takes 6 YEARS. And only 50% of people in recovery fully recover. I think Gracie did very well, shes still unfit but did way better than I thought she would! I think by next nationals she will probably be almost at 100 or at 100.

I wonder how Hubbell/Donahue really feel about Chock & Bates now? There’s talk about how everybody supports each other at their training center in Canada. I used to ballroom dance and competition couples training at the same studio were never good friends or supportive of each other. H/D strike me as the type of couple who is only nice to you if you’re way lower than them in rankings. If you’re a threat competitively, then they aren’t so friendly. I ran into this all the time as a competitive ballroom dancer. And talk about political judging...

I know it's been discussed that that Hawayek and Baker are having trouble progressing due to the lack of height difference, but I just don't think they connect to each other. They never make eye contact. I keep waiting for them to have a moment locked in to each other. It seems like he tries, but she's just too into herself, either looking down or out into the rafters, mouth agape. To me, this gives the impression of a little boy going after a girl that's just not into him. It also doesn't help that her lashes cover her eyes so much, giving her a bit of a soulless look. Sorry for the read, Kaitlin, but I hope you make it to my library for your own good.

I was amused by how the commentators (Terry Gannon, Tanith Belbin, etc.) consistently acted as if there were only three spaces on the podium and the USFSA's dumb pewter medal didn't exist. At one point Tanith explicitly said that Tomoki Hiwatashi was "near" the podium last year, when in fact he was on it. It's like they don't want the public at large to know that the USFSA gives fourth-place medals.

I definitely agree that H/D did this to themselves. Their free at nationals was better but it’s too late, they should have made these somewhat decent changes earlier or just scrapped the program. I don’t like the RD either but it’s scoring fine. C/B weren’t at their cleanest this time but everything that was clean was super super clean. Everything besides the wobble in the RD was stunning (and she didn’t lose her edge so they didn’t lose as many points as they could’ve). They have the best FD of the season in terms of what an FD is meant to do. IMO they’re the favourites for the 3rd world podium spot with P/C and S/K.

At least one of Nathan's shirts was done by his mom (and possibly the yellow and light blue shirt as well). I thought people knew that it was his mom but apparently many still think Vera does his costumes. I doubt he has time to get fitted by Vera these days.. So I know y'all like to talk about costumes and all but please don't be cruel and stop giving him crap about the shirts (it's his MOTHER sewing the shirts, guys! how symbolic and nice of him to wear them) He looks very comfortable doing his jumps and giving an incredible performance. fs-gossips.com/nathan-chen-any-sport-is-a-story-about-how-to-get-better-day-by-day/

Just to clarify one thing, Alysa's primary competition at Junior Worlds isn't really "Eteri's girls." In fact, I'm not even sure Eteri will have more than one girl at the event. Yes, Alysa's biggest rival, Kamila Valieva, is coached by Eteri and will be there. Ksenia Sinitsyna - coached by Panova, not Eteri - will almost certainly be there, as well. My sense is that Russia's third spot is just as likely to go to Anna Frolova - who until recently was coached by Panova and is now coached by Davydov, and who just won Russia a bronze at the Junior Olympics - as it is to Daria Usacheva, who is coached by Eteri and who placed 5th at the Junior Grand Prix Final. In either case, it's unlikely that either Frolova or Usacheva would pose too much of a threat to Alysa. So, at the end of the day, Alysa's biggest competition at Junior Worlds is really Kamila Valieva (Russia/Eteri), Ksenia Sinitsyna (Russia/Panova), and Haein Lee (Korea). It's gonna be exciting - and even more valuable developmental experience for Alysa, who showed nerves of steel defending her national title just moments after Mariah, who's nine years her senior, brought down the house.

@@chayaavtzon1507 You're totally right! My memory was mixed up. Thanks for catching that. It will be interesting to see how things unfold during and after Russian Junior Nationals, which I believe take place next week. Kamila Valieva is a lock for the Junior Worlds team, but the other two spots seem up for grabs. Daria is a strong contender, no doubt, and Khromykh, another Eteri girl, is perhaps a contender, as well. But Kseniia, Frolova, Tarakanova, and Vasilieva are all strong contenders, as well, and none of them skate for Eteri. (Tarakonova used to!) So it's by no means a sure thing that Eteri will have more than one girl at Junior Worlds. In short, as powerful at Team Tutberidze has become, the future of Russian figure skating extends beyond just Eteri. (Unless she eventually steals some of these other girls from their current coaches, haha.)

@@arose10 So true! It's so exciting to see all of this because as much as everyone loves talking about the other US girls or even the 3 current Eteri senior girls, my bet is that none of them will get single ladies podium on the Olympics. The 3 senior Eteri girls will all hit a critical point of body development during 2022, while Alysa and Kamila might probably be at their peak before going through it later. It may be that Evgenia, having fully reworked her jumps with her more mature body, is able to add something exciting and new like a triple axel or quad salchow and land it beautifully for the Olympics. Also, I have seen the monster kid that Veronika Zhilina is and she gives me chills...
@arose10
@arose10 4 жыл бұрын
@@Bambi469 This is purely gut and I could wind up being 100% wrong, but I predict Russia's team for 2022 will be Kamila, Anna, and Sasha. I think Kostornaia's body will develop somewhat similarly to that of the previous Euro champion, Sofia Samodurova, over the next 12-24 months, causing her to lose her consistency and effortlessness. (Anna will remain a bean, just a little taller, and Sasha will retain her trim, athletic build.) I think Zhenya will be in the Olympics, but competing for Armenia or Canada; I think she will have picked up a quad sal and will be a medal contender, but likely for no higher than bronze, which will nevertheless be a huge accomplishment. Outside of Russia, the biggest contenders will be Alysa and hopefully Rika, and maybe Young You and/or Haein Lee out of Korea.
@arose10

@@Bambi469 And, yes, Veronika Zhilina is from outer space! Girl has Sasha's insane athleticism while being a far more complete skater. (Not to knock on Sasha, who I adore.) Veronika won't be eligible until 2026. She's part of a whole new generation of Russian skaters beyond the 3A, Kamila, etc. who make it clear that Russia is going to be filling out a majority of podiums for some time to come. Among others, I'm fond of Sofya Akatyeva, who I sort of think of as the Russian Alysa Liu. (They skate with a similar exuberance and are both members of the exclusive quad-trixel club.)

Amazed that you mention Isabeau. I have been watching this seemingly little known girl for a few years now after finding the videos by accident on youtube and am just out of my mind at her every new program. The sheer skating beauty and musical and artistic sophistication is just out of this world. Her little body is like merely this connective strand between the music and the ice.I feel like she is in a league all by herself, and i am hopeful that something is done about the whole jump frenzy and the current scoring system so that it doesn't ruin her, because if she gets to the point where she is pressured to start pursuing quads and all that bologna and perhaps neglecting these other amazing skills that she has, in my opinion it will be an immense loss to the whole history of skating, incomparably more than any of the current Russian girls. I know i am being dramatic, but i think we have something truly unique here. This girl PERFORMS! Her every appearance is a performance. She skates in such a way, with such artistic excitement, that jumps are COMPLETELY redundant and unnecessary. We need to FIGHT for this level of quality to become the standard to strive for. This is what the sport should be.

The developmental skaters sat in the endzone waving flags and screaming which added to arena excitement. Lots of waiting around in arena waiting NBC with commercials after each skater sometimes. Hope to never see Tanith on Homelife again. The young guys/girls who were intermediates last year were impressive at juniors- Jacob, Liam Robert Y, Isabeu, Lindsay, Mia K. HERE FOR THE BRADIE PARTY! It’s so tremendously exciting to be a part of her incredible season. (Montreal here we come!) Her style is unique, elegant and sophisticated, and perfectly suited to her artistic vision. I’m proud she set an SP record, topping her own from last year, in a season that included GPFinals. To hold one’s own with such focus and grace facing an unprecedented volume of competitors from Russia, Japan and Korea is no small feat. Few other skaters can even relate to this time and challenge in skating, ever. I’m also fascinated by the lyrical, avant-garde elements of her choreo. Quite refreshing compared to other stylistic interpretations. She continues to be an invaluable contributor to Team USA, and USFS is truly lucky to have her grit and verve. As an artist myself, I am inspired by Bradie’s growth and strength, not to mention her spirit of sportsmanship. Yours Truly, The Bradie Ladies of Wisconsin!

Dave & Jonathan, at 31:00, you talk about how to keep two spots. I saw others answer you, but I want to add this: KEEPING two spots is MUCH easier than GETTING two spots. Because: when you have two (or three) entries, your top two entries' placements have to add to 28 to keep two spots, and they have to add to 13 to get three spots. HOWEVER, if you have only one entry (as the US did for two years in pairs skating), you have to be in the top 10 to get two spots (and be in the top 2 at worlds to get three spots). That is SO much harder than just adding your two entries together who placed 12th and 16th, or 13th and 14th or something. So *keeping* two spots is of PRIMARY importance going into next worlds in 2021, (which determine Olympic spots).

@@letitiakearney2423 it's all about funding. I don't think any UK skaters get funding from BIS. Members pay a lot to BIS for their annual membership, tests, comps, and merchandise, but most members get almost nothing in return (with the exception of insurance that comes with paying the membership fee). The question is, how can it be supported? My family makes compromises and sacrifices to support our skating daughter. We haven't had a holiday abroad in the past 5 years and we use only one car now because we simply cannot afford to run 2. It's all about the money. BIS are a business their primary focus is making money. They see skaters as ££ for their fees, same with coaches. Skating in the UK could use some dedicated funding and an approach similar to gymnastics had 10+ years ago. Our Government will always bail out the banks, but support our youngsters make sporting achievements? Nope.

This is an outstanding and spot-on recap of U.S. Nationals. Your thoughts are very similar to mine. I think this is the best possible World team we could select. I'm unsure about giving Cain and LeDuc a spot since they were only 4th and have limitations, but strategically it makes sense to send them over a team with a weak international history. While it might help to decide second spots after an international competition, 4 Continents is way too soon after US Nationals this year for that to feel entirely fair. I was thrilled to see the Knierims looking stronger and revitalized. I too love Alexa's intensity, it shows me she's passionate. If they skate well, they will place very well at Worlds. It was great to see Vincent return in strong condition, as well as Jason who has had ups-and-downs while adjusting to his new training situation. I love how Tracy has taken him under her wing. Chock and Bates' free dance is just perfect for them. All in all, it was a wonderful Nationals across all disciplines.

simply Skye I agree that the timing of 4CC after nationals makes it hard to judge worlds readiness, yet I also really feel there needs to be a competition in the later half of the season to help make world team selection because honestly if you are peaked and ready out of the gate in the first half of the season a lot of the time they aren’t going to do well at worlds, I think US should move nationals to let 4CC be more representative a competition.

A random mishmash of comments....probably no one will read it but that's okay lol. Yeah, there's something about Amber that definitely seems fake and rehearsed to me, even just the faces she makes when she steps out on the ice. She actually feels like our Gabby Daleman to me - too aware of the image she's selling. I actually found Gracie's performances pretty courageous. I know she wasn't giving us emotion but I think it's because she was so nervous with this being her first time back. I noticed an improvement in that even from the short to the long. Her improvement overall has gone so much faster than I thought it would. Karen Chen is seriously one of my favorite skaters. God, if she could just freakin' skate clean she'd be dominating. I hope she adds a sports psychologist to her team. And I know the quad lutz comment was kind of a joke but I'd love to see her try. She's got the height for sure. Totally agree about Alysa's PCS. And that that lutz got way more points than it should have. I support her overall, and I realize she still did a lot more technically even without the lutz, but it's still really disappointing to see her beat a skate like Mariah's. (And, I'm not convinced yet that she'll keep her jumps as she grows....) Agree about McNamara and Carpenter. I just find them boring and unmemorable. :/ I did think Hubbell & Donohue were much better here than even at say, the Grand Prix Final, but I want their 2018 free dance back! I loved it so much. It was perfect for them, like, in the way that no one could skate it the way they do. I feel like Mervin & Olivia are overscored. I feel like they're getting credit for the fact that *he* is great, ignoring the fact that the overall appearance is brought down by her. I was surprised to see that huge score difference in comparison to say, Timlen and Highgate-Brutman in the short who, IMO, skate much better overall as a pair. I love the way she moves in particular. Totally agree about Jason and the emotion. I definitely wasn't feeling it until now, honestly not just this year but really ever (doesn't mean I didn't love him). I always think of Jeremy Abbott when I think of someone who's actually feeling it and thus makes you feel it too, and for me Jason hasn't been that. But he definitely stepped way closer this time. Regarding the Jew vs. non-Jew discussion, I actually feel Roman Sadovsky's almost the most this season and he's wearing a freaking cross! (Which kind of bothers me...at least tuck it into your shirt for a Schindler's list program. Love, a Jew) Not true that you have to be thin to do doubles lol! I could do doubles in my day even with a few sugar bags' worth of extra pounds.

I got in late last night so missed catching you guys right away. At the Friends brunch Amber had the same HEAVY eye makeup as she does performing. The other ladies were more muted and natural looking. It was a nice meet & greet so I was happy.

For me, the strangest thing about US Championship, was lagging live scoreboard that showed previous element instead of the last one=)

Why quote Eunsoo every time we talk about the Mariah? It is an insult to both parties. As an adult I think it is childish to cultivate this rivalry. It is great that mariah is skating like never before, but it would be sad that this is due to someone other than herself. Who deserved the gold medal by the way and for the second year in a row is stolen. But she is not a teenanger skater with quads and 3 axels. Should that be the point, until when quantity will beat quality? Who is so rare in now days. Alisa will not have any progress with this overscoring, who doens't happen in international competitions.
