Number 1 tip - Use a 3 button mouse
I cannot stress this enough - you’re spending twice as much time navigating in your SketchUp model without a three button mouse. Scrolling zooms in, clicking the middle mouse button down orbits, and keyboard shortcuts complete the package
Tip 2 - Use the shift key to pan
One of the benefits of using a mouse with three buttons is you can pair it with the shift key to quickly pan in your models. I’ve watched people navigate before where they’ll orbit with the middle mouse button, then go up and click on the pan icon in the bar above and click and drag. Don’t do that - click and hold the middle mouse button and hold the shift key to quickly pan in your model.
Tip 3 - Place your camera with position camera
When you start getting inside tight spaces with your camera, it can get a bit…frustrating trying to use the zoom and orbit tools to get the view you’re looking for. Instead, use the position camera tool to both set the location of your camera, and set the direction the camera is looking
Tip 4 - Set the FOV using the zoom tool
Sometimes when you’re in a really tight space in your SketchUp models, you can’t see what you’d like to see with your camera. You can use the zoom tool (and the shift key) to set your FOV so you can see more of your tight space.
Tip 5 - SAVE CAMERA VIEWS
When you find a camera view that you keep coming back to, don’t recreate the wheel every time. Instead, go up to view, animation, and save your scene. Then, all you have to do is click on the tab to come back to your view!

These are all great tips, thank you for all that. I want to add that, adding a scene, also saves the field of view, and the current style, so it will become really fast, if you want to make those changes too.

Thanks for the tips. The drag from floor position to target is one I either didn't know about or forgot. One extra tip with this- You can type in the height after positioning the camera to alter viewpoint. Obviously you then need to drag the viewer around to get the correct final position.

Great video! Thanks. This home is very nice! I have to make the top edge of a fancy glass balustrade along a long bridge inside a building. It's about 160m long in total. Mainly it's straight vertical glass but has circular pipe like railing running all the way long 100mm wide it has sort of half circle nests along the way. I can't use follow me all the way in one go. At times it just doesn't want to take the curve of one of the nests. When I restart the pipe-shaped top becomes all edged and I don't know how to pan while keeping my follow me active. I have tried to cut it into groups but then one can see where I glue them together again.

Great video. I am a beginner and I found the navigation not very intuitive to be honest. I would like to be able to use my right mouse button for dragging Sketchup doesnt differenciate between click-release and click-hold. I would like to set click release to the drop down menu and click-hold for drag. In addition to this I would like to have the ability to "quick cast" tools. Quick cast in video games is a great time saver. The tool is applied instead of selected while holding the key. You safe time because you dont have to right click. So in conclusion my dream would be in the system preferences Sketchup letting you select between: Clickt to Select-Tool like we have now but also hold to select tool or quickcast to apply tool.

@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! It wasn't mentioned partially because it's a new piece of hardware people would have to buy, and partially because I don't own one. Maybe you can answer - I assume you need your right hand on a mouse to select and interact, and your left hand on the 3D mouse to navigate - how does this affect your ability to use keyboard shortcuts?
@AdminSmithee
@AdminSmithee 5 жыл бұрын
@@Thesketchupessentials you do use it with your left hand, you go back and forward between your 3D mouse and keyboard a bit like you go back and forward between your righthand. And numpad. You control the camera with the 3Dmouse, you can pan, zoom and tilt it. Its great to rotate the camera around a model/scene while you edit or select it. Its also great to fly trough your models for making routing decesions . You place it there where you usally have restpoint for your lefthand and manipulate gently to move the camera. You can set it up per application on how you like it to behave and setup shortkeys or things like views. If you use Sketchup regularly its a musthave. To be honest I'm suprised you dont have one, would be the same if a Photoshop expert never used a Wacom. Time to contact them for a sponord video ;)

What do you do when orbit tool seems to have become lost? Every time you use it, it gives you a counter intuitive result.
@Zaptruder

You can orbit and pan with just the mouse. Shift is a crutch. To pan, start by pressing and holding middle to orbit, then press and hold left as well to pan. One hand only required. Nearly as good as having a 3D connexion space mouse... except you can't also use your mouse cursor while navigating.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 5 жыл бұрын
I don't really see how it's a crutch if your hand is on the keyboard anyway - I don't think I've ever had a situation where I was navigating with a single hand, but sure - this achieves the same goal - thanks!

This was great video and I already was familiar with these features you showed, but I was looking for another tricky thing and I believe you might help me. Say I draw a normal size chair and then I copy that chair and move away from the first one very long distance, say 3000km (kilometers). Now if I select both objects (zoom to all objects) both chairs are too tiny to see them, they turned into dots on the screen and I cannot select neither of them. Ok, I can make first chair and make first Scene, so later I can find it back, but then alter I move other chair away 3000km, I lose it. I cannot find it.. What would you do to find both objects that are far far away from each other? Maybe you can make a small video to show it? Thanks! BR, Valters
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 5 жыл бұрын
I'd set up your scenes as soon as you create your objects, so that you don't lose them. That being said, that's a pretty big scale the spread out small objects - why is your spacing so big?
@wotesi
@wotesi 5 жыл бұрын
@@Thesketchupessentials I already tried, it's not working. Try yourself - make object, make Scene 1, copy object, move it next to first one, make Scene 2, then move 2nd object far away - Scene 2 stays where it was and loses 2nd object. Scenes are bound to coordinates, they does not move with objects. Well - I have got international project ongoing among EU cities. I have got to be able to make a drawings in different cities, but I need to know how to find them.. Once it will be done, I will share it with you.
@wotesi
@wotesi 5 жыл бұрын
@@Thesketchupessentials I just found the way myself. Besides Scenes I should place every object on different Layer. Then I make one Layer invisible and Zoom to all objects, then I find another object and make Scene 2. Then I can make all Layers visible and switch between Scenes, then it "flies" between Scenes. Well, it takes some time until it "flies" from one Scene to another, but at least I can find all objects.. :)

@@Thesketchupessentials That's not such a bad idea. I really would love to see Sketchup adopts a wasd sceme. Moving around in something like D5 Render and so many other packages is a breeze. Sketchup has to be about the worse. That said, just about everything else about SU is pretty enjoyable to work with.

But is it possible that none of you (content creators) have yet figured out that the best way to navigate a 3D scene is the WASD and mouse combination?

@@Thesketchupessentials Universally since time immemorial in PC gaming, the most efficient way to reach a point in 3D space is fly mode operated by WASD and mouse. This concept has been well understood by the creators of software such as Lumion, Enscape, D5......... The only ones who have not yet understood it well are most users and producers of modeling software.

That depends on how the model has been created. If you're creating a lot of high polygon geometry or using a lot of high resolution images, it's going to get big.
