In this edition of Insomnia Insight Coach Daniel explains one of the most common reasons for not seeing complete resolution of insomnia: Closing the hood.
We see that when we sleep easier bud don't understand why, stop learning and hope for the best - we have struggles again. But when we no longer try to close the hood, our struggles fade away and we find what we have been looking for: peace of mind and peaceful sleep.

Comment from Kiki that KZfaq removed for some reason + reply: - Hi Daniel! I had a question but before I ask I wanted to say to everyone reading this to NOT GIVE UP HOPE! A year ago I wanted to die… insomnia ruled my life and the fear, panic and dread were my daily companions, I searched and fought with myself to find the ONE thing I was missing in hopes it would click with me and I’d improve… that’s not how it works… you can’t fast forward or bypass the healing… every speed bump and every discovery of yet another hidden sleep effort, even the realization that trying not to have sleep efforts is ALSO an effort is MADDENING! The brain HAS to go through all the hard things to get to a place of peace so as hard as it is and yes it’s HARD .. give yourself the gift of being patient. Working with Coach Chris and the last 8 months with Coach Michelle was well worth the cost and effort. If I can improve while going through peri menopause, a hysterectomy, hormone issues , life changes and Covid twice anyone can do this. Honestly my faith in the Lord as has been the key for me because I believe without a doubt he led me to find your channel and to the Coaches. Insomnia is like walking through the “valley of the shadow of death” but on the other side there’s “green meadows and quiet streams” 🩷🙏🏻 I’d say I’m still in recovery because I get speed bumps but the searching is over … I just accept ( and accept doesn’t mean I like this) it just means I walk towards life instead of dwelling on how I slept. Now to my question…. I know it’s normal because I’ve heard it but why when I have a week or more of sleeping 7-8 hours am I fuzzy brained and low mood /fatigued and when I’m in a speed bump getting less then yes, I’m not happy I didn’t sleep but I’m not depressed feeling and have no brain fog. It’s my last big frustrating hurdle 😉 - So so glad Kiki to read these lines 😊!! Wonderful to hear and as for your final hurdle, check Insomnia Insight 477 - I think it will really help!

The part where you said just watching this episode was 'opening the hood' really resonated with me. Sometimes I feel anxious before watching your videos in case it somehow makes me feel worse but I always feel so much better after watching them. To have understanding and knowledge and clarity has really helped me in my journey, along with facing it head on instead of 'closing the hood' as you discussed. Thanks again for a really insightful video.

Thank you so much, I owe my recovery to you, Coach Alina and your Sleep Coach School channel.

This video was very timely for me. I started struggling intensely again recently after a long period of relative ease. Comparison and judgement are tough because I find myself thinking “no one else’s recovery took this long” or “no one else took this long to internalize these lessons” etc. I feel scared again, which suggests I never really left the struggle to begin with. There’s a small part of me that has hope knowing that I’ve come out of a struggle before. How much I believe the hope vs the fear changes by the minute lol. But last time, before I was exposed to your methods, I didn’t even have an ounce of hope, so I’m thankful that it’s there now.

Same here...really the same, I feel like I know everything about this channel and still have speedbumps and sometimes those bring me frustration big enough to not cherish the fact that I had long periods of nice sleep and even forgetting about this channel, and I am now back again trying to find something new, which is useless. I thought that occasional setback is okay and did not think about when it will happen because a 20-30 speesbumps in couple of years ended with period of good sleep but here I am again, feeling as it was square one. Coach Alina said be prepared to have 100 speedbumps but thoughts inevitably arise when this will be settled...i could sleep well forn3 months and then not sleep well one night, and yes - tomorrow anxiety creeps in and I dont sleep 2 days and rewatch all favourite videos and get sleep again...but to have again speedbump and again go through... at least a bit od comfort that I saw your comment so i am not the only one..there are episodes about speedbumps on this channel but you know they sound all the same..eventually you have to surrender to speedbumps and I did it and I was okay, but after another few speedbumps...donno what to think

Yes! I just realized this speed bump that I absolutely avoid thinking about it or traveling or changing bedtime etc. I sleep better but hide from it coming back. Over time I start actively not wanting it to come back and then it comes back. But I understand it this time and I am in such a better place.

I had two nights with insomnia this week after having a whole 2 months of being free. I didn’t realize why but now I know. 1. I stayed up late with friends which is something I never do, 2. My sleep effort that normally works didn’t and it freaked me out and 3. I had anxiety about my baby waking me up at night cause he has been waking me up almost every hour and 4. I began to panic about all this things thinking I wouldn’t sleep and my days would be ruined

Great video! I can say that I'm quite over the insomnia. I'm not caring much anymore about it and it doesn't prevent me from living at all. As of today, I just still have a remaining fear of the actual feeling of sleepiness. (Yes, not even sleeplessness.. xD) and when I'm too tired, the "symptoms" (body sinking into the bed, consciousness drifting...) scare me and make me feel uncomfortable, preventing me from sleeping for hours. This fear of the actual feeling of being sleepy happens only when I'm very tired and can feel it well. I know it's a leftover from the trauma of back when I was taking meds that were enhancing the sleepiness to a point where it was barely bearable (and ofc I still couldn't sleep). I was having hallucinations and such What can I do? Is there any difference in method compared with accepting the sleeplessness, which is like the opposite? Thank you for all those incredibly helpful ressources.

Hi Coach Daniel, I think I find myself finding ways to calm hyperarousal. That’s the one piece I find myself searching. I’ve been in Beth’s program for 7 weeks and I have had progress but it is beyond up and down and nothing consistent. And I see out of body experience is it’s the hyperarousal when I go to bed. And I don’t really understand what to do.

Hi Daniel, Have you ever spoken about or have any insight into insomnia in parents? I find that I was probably just wired to be prone to insomnia but find that my insomnia is most challenging now that I’m a parent. The frequent and irregular night time disruptions that a parent experiences continue to be a pain point for me. I recently had a period of peaceful sleep come to a halt when my toddler got sick which lead to a week or so have frequent night time disruptions tending to my child. After my daughter recovered from her illness I find that my sleep is still disturbed for some time after even though things “should” have returned to normal.

Hey doc, great video as always. I know why I had insomnia, why it got better, and how to allow thoughts and emotions. But sometimes I feel overwhelmed by education and all the concepts. Am I closing the hood if I know that just allowing my experience to be without trying to change it brings to a more peaceful state, or do I have to understand every particular?

Isn't it enough to know it was all anxiety/hyperarousal & our attempt at solving it?
@AndrB7
@AndrB7 6 ай бұрын
Hi, I have some ideas about this... The "closing the hood" that Daniel means, I think, is a kind of sleep effort, where someone's sleep has improved to an "adequate" level and then they're afraid that thinking more about sleep, learning a concept, etc., will make things worse again, so they avoid reading or watching anything about sleep in order to protect it. On the other hand, your situation, now you have recovered, is that you're no longer obsessed with sleep-related concepts but neither do you need to avoid them. The metaphor is that the hood can remain open but you're not staring into it. I wonder though, with you saying you feel overwhelmed by the education and concepts, that you may still have some residual fears? I.e., do you feel you need to know every detail of every concept inside-out in case insomnia sneaks back in through a chink in your armour? It might be an opportunity to let go of a remaining subtle attempt to protect yourself from future insomnia. Also bear in mind that the whole point of all the concepts and explanations is to show someone who is struggling and afraid of what is happening to them that it isn't dangerous. Usually the person thinks "the solution can't be as simple as you say because I'm experiencing X so I'm obviously a unique and special case." Then our response is, well actually what you're experiencing is so common that we have a name for it, we know that it works like this, and at its root is the same hyperarousal/learned fear and so the approach to take remains the same. At the beginning the person is so obsessed with their minute-by-minute experience that we have to play "symptom whack-a-mole" to quieten their mind to the point where they are willing to entertain the possibility that inaction is a solution. As we progress and recover the concepts become less relevant to our experience and more just interesting psychological ideas, if we have that interest. (You can probably tell that I do!) I hope this helps Andrew
@Fregthefrog98

@@AndrB7 Hi Andrew, thanks for the insightful comment. You are right I have mostly recovered but there are some lingering fears, not so much of insomnia coming back, but of not applying the 'right' approach, or getting confused by concepts thinking I have to do this and that (like paying attention to not closing the hood, to not make efforts, etc). Paradoxically this misunderstanding brought me from inaction back to action and into my head, with some sleep struggles returning.

Hey Daniel, thank you for this video. As you know, I’ve been watching your channel for a little over a year now, and my sleep has improved in comparison to when I first started experiencing insomnia. But I still have not had a single night of seven hours or more for the past two years.I can fall asleep pretty easily every single night but once I wake up a few hours later, I can’t seem to get back to sleep. And I’m not really stressed or frantic or irritated when I wake up, but the desire to fall back asleep is obviously there. What do I do?
