Hi Daniel, thanks for sharing this! I totally agree with this model. I've been thinking on the "thoughts" element and I actually saw there two kinds: 1. automatic thoughts (or scary thoughts) - the ones we can't really control, they are like emotions, they just appear with no effort, e.g. "I won't be able to sleep again" or "this should not be happening, something is wrong with me". 2. the second type is the "correct" or rational thoughts - the ones that I needed to consciously 'plant' in my brain, like "it is okay to not feel sleepy in the evening, eventually the body will take over and I will fall asleep, just don't force it now". I realized that I cannot control the automatic thoughts, when i tried not to think them, it only made things worse. So I ditched the idea of consciously changing them. On the other hand, I was in total control of choosing the 'rational' thoughts, so I started doing mind work to pick the thoughts that were calming me. Such "two-sided" thought work actually made my automatic thoughts fade away. Do you think that thinking the rational thoughts alongside having (and accepting) the automatic thoughts could be a potential "negative thought neutralizer"?

Alina H. Alina! Thanks so much for staying in touch and sharing more really helpful insights. As I was reading the first part of this comment I was thinking - exactly, there are automatic thoughts and we don’t have direct control over what pops up in our minds. But by doing that deliberate thought work, on the rational thoughts, you do change the automatic ones as well. Your negative automatic thoughts may happen less, you identify an automatic thought faster and you can dismiss them, you also are less bothered by then as you engage less with them. Then I got to the end of your comment and saw that you had reached the same conclusion! I really appreciate the input and I’ll expand on this in tonight’s Ask Daniel episode, 39! Best!

I have a comment / question that I haven't found addressed on your site, which is overall Fantastic! In your Natto book, in your newsletter, and on this channel, you often talk about how awareness and understanding are key to helping our sleep issues resolve. I feel VERY aware and understand most of what you discuss. But I still have sneaky sleep efforts or trouble befriending wakefulness on a consistent basis. This is especially true with wakings in the middle of the night, when the brain is less rational (partly sleepy but aroused!!). I feel sometimes that the emotions are before the thoughts - or at least I can't trace back to what the thought was that got me worried. I know there is no bear, but it is sure hard to keep reminding myself of that over and over and over!! Thanks for any tips...

Rebecca Lawther Hi Rebecca! Welcome to the channel and thanks for the comment 🤗 I uploaded a video last week Insomnia insight 315 where I talk toward the end about how to create a thought ladder. I think that’s very much similar to a positive thought trail. But my example there wasn’t the best. I’ll think of a better one and include it in Ask Daniel #50 tonight!

The main thing I don't agree with is that thoughts are always the trigger for emotions. They can be, but there are plenty of things that trigger emotions directly without going through thoughts first. If someone slaps me, my immediate anger and/or fear is faster than the thought. I'd also recommend reading "The Awakened Brain" by Lisa Miller which describes the pitfall of CBT, that although its valuable, there are circumstances when it really doesn't apply.

Thanks so much for sharing this, I will ponder. I’ll admit I’ve been dogmatically believing that every emotion comes from a thought, but can an emotion be like a reflex? Maybe in the end, it’s not always possible to know if there is a subconscious interpretation of a situation that is super fast and involves thoughts or not. I’ll check this book out as well. Thanks so much for being here and sharing 😊

Thank you very much for this concept , Daniel. Do you believe this concept should be applied towards thoughts that produce insomnia related sadness and depression (e.i should the thoughts provoking sadness and depression be modified), or should you just sit with these emotions as long as needed?

Hi Julia, You know, I think this model has a lot of value, I’m glad you came across this. However, since making this video, I am drifting more and more into believing that trying purposely to change a thought from a to b is tricky. There’s some pressure there. So unless we have some fleeting thoughts that easily are changed, then I think it helps more to sit with the thoughts and the emotions. It can sound less enticing, but, when we observe those thoughts that make us sad, they are already changing. There’s this automatic change that happens simply thanks to awareness. So yes, I think in most situations, this is the way 🙂

Daniel hello, my name is Shawn. I came across your KZfaq channel while looking for answers about my sleep issue. I am pretty worried. I know you probably get a lot of people thinking they may have a type of fatal insomnia. Thats exactly where im at. However, i cant explain it away and it seems every couple nights its getting worse. For the past few months i have been telling my girlfriend i dont feel like im getting into a deep sleep. Almost staying in a dream like state throughout the night, but not giving it too much thought or worry. Then about a week or two ago, insomnia grew more and more. One night a week or so ago, i didnt sleep at all over the night and decided to stay up so that i would feel sleepy the next night. After being up that long i would usually sleep a solid 10 or more hours straight no problem. I went to sleep that next night only to wake up two hours later, remembering every bit of a dream i had had vividly. It took a little bit to fall back asleep and woke up 2 hours later remembering every bit of that dream as well. So only dreaming as i was going to sleep for two hours at a time. This has went on for over a week, sleep almost exactly two hours, wake up remembering full dreams and go back to sleep for two hours, untill i just get up for the day. Last night i slept for about 3-4 hours once again dreaming and remembering vividly. After this last time of waking ive tried to go back to sleep and when i get to the point where i can feel im falling asleep, i jerk out of it and havent been able to go back to sleep, just gave up. Also the past three or four days days i have very loud tinnitus. Getting pretty worried but at the same time telling myself its all in my head. Any advice or opinion would be great. Thank you and thanks for your channel!

Dear Suzzann, sorry to hear what’s been happening, but glad you found the channel! You’re right, what you describe is a very common story. And that’s always a good thing! Knowing that you’re going through something that many, many are going through can help demystify and make you less anxious. In the description here you’ll find two playlists that I think can help. There’s one on sfi/ffi and one on hypnic jerks. I’ll reply at length to your comment on Monday - hang in there!!!

Chen Liang hi! Check out the playlist called “The Model”. It’s in the description of the newer episodes. In one of those videos I go over 5 ways to work with thoughts! Briefly there’s education, there’s dismissing thoughts, there’s changing thoughts by collecting evidence, there’s building a thought ladder!

Chen Liang Hi Chen, totally get it. This is super common. And it gets better once you start seeing that sleep comes your way. It’s like a spiral in the good direction! You start understanding more, then you sleep a little better, then you worry a little less, then you understand more, you sleep a little better etc. Ive never come across anyone who’s been willing to work and unlearn and learn who hasn’t gone on to sleep well. It’s hard to see from the inside perspective but, you’ll do really well as long as you stay worth the plan!

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 the insomnia i am currently strugling with is chronic . i can go days without sleep. once i get a bit of sleep is like magic and i focus so much on it. then the vicious cycle start again over and over. lately it even make me unable to focus on something else.its becoming more like obsession.

Chen Liang Totally hear Chen. Many people think that insomnia is just a nighttime problem. As you know it’s in fact a day and night problem because when you don’t sleep you think about that all day long. And then all that thinking makes it impossible for you not to sleep during the night. But know that this is very common. And just as getting insomnia is like a spiral, you can reverse that spiral. Sometimes it just takes a few nights of sleeping better and understanding more to start you on the path of reversing that spiral and getting to a point where you sleep really well!
