So you're fighting someone with a gun and all you have is your axe, he shoots you but you somehow manage to cut the bullet mid air, an incredible stroke of luck, but unfortunately it just splits it into 3 and you get shot 3 times instead. Fantastic.

Nathan Looke the impact the bullet has when it hits the blade causes it to change direction...(it’s not a normal bullet anymore...it changed shape also weight) so yea u won’t get hit at all....video clearly shows that if u imagine your the balloons in the middle when he shoot....none of them gets hit ...the ones around the middle does

Just want to point out that the waviness (aka. “WIBBLEMENT?”) of the axe blade was probably due to the scanning of the camera’s sensor. In reality, the blade was just vibrating back and forth, not waving, but the camera’s sensor scans vertically from top to bottom over the course of whatever fraction of a second the framerate was set at. Because the axe blade was vibrating faster than that, it causes the edge to appear wavy as the sensor scans down it. If it had been laying sideways in frame, it would have looked different.

The Phantom V2511 uses a global shutter, which scans the entire frame at once. You are actually observing the flexing of the axe blade (which is the vibration), and it is not an artifact of the exposure method. A rolling shutter (which scans line by line) would produce such an artifact, but it looks unnatural (see GoPro video of airplane propellers, inside-the guitar videos, etc.). As a side note, the blade is probably vibrating at its harmonic frequency, which is certainly well within the range of human hearing. The slowest framerate of 25,600 fps is at the very extreme or even outside of human hearing, and the main vibrational mode is at a much lower frequency than this. On a research grade high speed camera like this, you absolutely would not want artifact from a rolling shutter, which would make it difficult or impossible to correctly interpret the results.

Not really. The .45ACP round used in this episode is encased in a full metal jacket. ie it's a lead bullet with an outer copper jacket

Yeah, I remember when they first teased the idea and i thought it would lose the sprit of TheSlowMoGuys, but it been great so far. It's just like the originals but with a better budget and a more consistent upload schedule. I hope they consider continuing this.
