Thank you for this video, I’m grateful I found it. We have been doing this for a little over a month now. My almost 2 year old son has a speech delay and although we are seeing big improvements in his communication, he was not just throwing things when he was upset but throwing things AT us. Wooden blocks, big plastic toys, anything and everything. The first couple days of implementing the hurt toy box was hard bc he would get mad at us and find something else to throw at us and we ended up have to take a lot of his toys away. However, we stuck to it and also really tried to tamp down our reactions (hard to do when it hurts). We saw improvement after just a few days and now a month later he rarely throws at us and when he does it’s usually bc we aren’t paying attention and he is trying to communicate something to us and get our attention. We r working on having him say mama or dada if he needs us. So again, thank you, it’s been nice not getting pelted in the head with wooden blocks multiple times a day. 😅

Maaaayyybe consider moving the books somewhere else bc toddlers LOVE pulling things off shelves so maybe trade the books for stuffed animals bc I doubt they will stop pulling things down bc that’s just what they do! Lol 😬💕

CF here- one of my students (EI homecare) does this, both out of frustration and sometimes when just done with an activity! love this concept. So you're doing each time they throw something? Should the basket then stay out the whole session, if the child is constantly throwing each item?

Same here, first-time parents to twins, sometimes I feel like I have no idea how to handle them, and they just spin off out of control, I feel so helpless and bad and find it odd that I dont seem to have this innate parenting tool I always thought moms had.

My 2 year old throws his toys when he is done playing with them or when he is too excited or the Minute I tell him not to throw the toys, he does it more ! This is a great idea .

I would need literally an entire toy box for hurt toys. My son picks up and throws any toy he sees that he doesn’t like, understand, or want to play with. Which makes it extremely difficult for me to teach him new skills through play (like object imitation) bc if he doesn’t want to do it, he’s just going to throw all the toys and he thinks all his problems are solved. I could try this method but basically he’s going to end up not having any toys left to play with for the whole night. Also, I’m not sure if he would understand or even miss some toys because he also tends to throw them when he’s done playing with them.

I’ve been so lousy in holding my ground. Starting today we’re going to follow those consequences. What about constant aggression towards siblings? My son is 2.5 and he’s constantly hitting. I think maybe we’ve given too big of reactions.

Maybe create a safe space where he can go to calm down, cushions, soft, and model counting and taking deep breath‘s

Or you can try to provide some sensory regulation through joint compressions or deep squeezes

Thank you !! I’ll be doing this tomorrow - my 2yo likes to throw toys down the stairs and watches it fall …. Would you suggest I walk down and pick it up and put in the basket and show her what I’m doing as well :)

Hmmm that could be because they like the sound - find something that sounds similar that is appropriate (like puzzle pieces on a board or in a hamper & show her that instead when she does that)

I need a huge laundry basket, I have a huge thrower like a tornado went through the home after 15 minutes, I dont even have time to respond to it all (twins over here) wonder if 19 month olds could grasp this?

That’s a great strategy! But what if kids throw things that they don’t want (like food, spoon, water bottle) or things that have nothing to do with them (like mom’s bag, books, remote control) ? It’s hard for us to put these thing in the basket.

For the food I plan on making a video soon with a no thank you bowl and you replace the behavior of throwing the food on the ground with putting the food into a separate bowl. Often times kids throw food because they do not like the texture of it and so this allows us to have the child touch the object and still have their power of refusing it by placing it in a separate container or a bowl that they know they will not be forced to eat. It’s kind of a win-win because we were placed the throwing behavior and also we get the child to have more exposure with the food and I feel successful as well so try that for the food! Other things kids often throw if it is not out of frustration is because they do not know what to do with it. So a lot of times younger children will throw toys because they do not know how to play with them and so that’s when we just model for them how much fun it is to play with a toy and what to do with it and we hand-over- hand help them do it! This video is aimed more towards children who are throwing toys out of refusal or to gain attention (behavioral). Your little one sounds like that’s his level of play right now so we just need to expand & teach on it! You got it! :)

Really great idea! What do you do if your child throws a toy at you that he isn't bothered about (and it hurts you) and has shown you it before he throws it at you. How do you deal with that situation? How do you also help them get over the situation as he will carry it on or make it worse? Thank you 🙃

I would recommend to find the cause of why he’s throwing and make sure to remove the negative attention associated with the throwing because he might just be wanting attention in general. So show him what to do with the toys instead and make it super fun and give positive attention for whenever he does that to encourage and motivate him to do the appropriate thing with the toy & get positive attention vs getting negative attention from throwing (both are attention & often that’s what the child is wanting!) so remove attention for negative & create attention for positive!

My child do it when he is watching his video and a commercial comes out so he toss the phone because he is mad that the commercial come out and he can’t not scape the add so this method also works for that? Because my child doesn’t let me to grab the phone when is his 15 minutes screen time he is 2 years old

Thank you... I'm really struggling with this no spanking thing I'm trying but boy do I feel like I'm just spoiling him. He threw himself on the floor today and I had to go into the bathroom to stop myself whacking him....it does not help that everyone around me keeps saying "he acts like that cuz u don't spank him" he's 20 months old almost 2 he doesn't understand. I don't want him to fear me. Sigh... I'll try this with the throwing but any advice on kicking? During diaper changes he thinks it's fun to kick, he laughs. And it it too early to potty train? 20 months...not talking.

Let me say this worked for throwing. He doesn't throw anymore. Now he hits. Himself or anyone else when he's not getting his way or if he falls down for e.g he jumps up and hits himself or me while crying.

What my issue is not understanding why my 2.5 years old throws. He throws out of nowhere. He sees a bottle of water on the table picks it up and throws it on the floor. He asks for his snack, I give him exactly what he asks for. He eats a couple of it and throws the whole plate down. He just steps up on his tower, sees a remote or his toys and throws them down. This has been an ongoing thing for months and whatever we do which you suggested it doesn’t help at all. Does anyone has experience with the similar situation?

My little guy doesn't play with toys he throws - just to see what they do? Or maybe because he wants to see our reaction - I've been putting his toys up after showing him how to play with it if he keeps throwing but gonna try this and be very nonemotional

Have a “no thank you bowl” for food & ignore the throwing chairs, etc. be sure not to give attention to the negative behaviors - check out my behavior video! :)

They have plates and bowls with suction cups on the bottom on Amazon, works perfect for kids that throw there food, I cant let my child go to bed hungry!

Ok my 2 year old realized that hitting me in the FACE with hard toys gets a reaction. And he’s injured me 3 times. Black eye, scratched my eye, and right now I have a bruised swollen ear and that’s why I’ve looked up this video. And it’s been months, we started time outs before the second time and I don’t know what to do.

So I did this and eventually all of his toys were gone and he resulted in grabbing anything he can and trying to break things. He’s almost two and usually starts with attention seeking or thinking it’s funny to throw it at us or the TV and when we put it in on the basket he starts throwing a tantrum and hurting us. How would you handle this

Is there something that he CAN throw that you can give him? For example when we say “don’t jump on the couch” all a child hears is “jump on the couch!” & gains attention - so when we sit on the couch we say “nice sitting on the couch!” And then having a trampoline or home made crash pad is a great place to transition him when he’s jumping - “jump, on the crash pad!” Therefore, we want to address what the communication is - make sure there’s not a need that’s unmet (Sensory) and then if it’s simply a tantrum, ignore & provide a calm down spot & let him go all the way through the bell curve & then once he’s calm, communicate expectations / rules & what he CAN do. Lmk if you have more questions & I hope this makes sense!

I just did an Instagram tip on this - I would recommend removing or placing them out of reach, and then figuring out why she is throwing, showing her what CAN be thrown, providing positive attention for gaining attention in a correct way, providing a sensory / calm down corner to safely be upset, and/or modeling what to do with toys instead!

Our child is under 2 years old and he's been throwing since he's 5 or 6 months old, and it's seems it is his way of playing, so we just let him. So we can't let him play with sand, grains, water and the sort indoors, and limits I think his creative play.

I would recommend moving those sensory activities outside if possible! You’re totally right, those are wonderful play opportunities to explore new textures! This video is aimed more towards 2 years and up, when they are throwing to refuse a task or to get attention. Often times other children who are early and developing a variety of play skills throw toys first because they are unsure of what to do with them. So I would recommend just modeling for him what to do with each item and make it super fun!!! See if he will imitate! (A lot of times when kids don’t play with toys it’s not because they don’t like them it’s because they don’t know how! That’s when we really have to teach play- which is the basis of all speech & language development really!) let me know your thoughts!

Show him what to do with the objects and give lots of praise and attention for that! It is typical for younger children or children with sensory needs to throw items so try to meet the sensory needs and provide attention for the positive appropriate toy use!

The way ppl pluck at petals on a flower just bc it's there is the energy my baby has w/ her toys & the things on my bed. Over at her gmas, that version is hide everything behind the couch. Here, it's her toys r everywhere & so r the pillows & blankets. I def see her just casually throwing inanimate things just simply bc. I can't but be amused by her somexs but after she's done she has vibe I'm such a rock star. Yessss, I'm content now. What else to terrorize? She's so little, it's hard to stay mad at her. But there's def been several moments she's hurt me pretty bad. She still pulls my hair too btw. But I have popped her hand. My baby's a gangster. She fake cries longer than when she's hurt. She's been that type baby in those vids where she doesn't even flinch, getting a shot. She's too independent somexs. Anyways, 🤷🏻‍♀️ idk. I don't try & make a big deal about things. I thought maybe she's just fascinated w/ experiencing gravity. Or it's just plain boredom. But she conveniently... Loves bouncy balls too. That's a whole other monster that "defies" gravity

What about for a 2 year old who doesn't talk yet ( speach therapy soon) he will look riggt at me throw a toy behind him and laughs, we correct him by saying no in a low tone firm but not yelling .. and he thinks it's hilarious, or will come up and hit us while saying a yah and we usually grab his hand before and again day no firmly .. and again it's funny apparently .. not sure what to do but keep saying no .. ??

Hey there! Have you seen this video yet? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLFietuemL-Ugqs.html BUT the main thing I can tell you is that he is getting what he wants (your attention - good OR bad) when he does those behaviors (hit & throw things) so I would stick with the non-response when he throws & simply put it away & never even look at him. Same with the hitting, do not respond - no matter what. I’ve seen this a million times & what happens is the child gets mad & starts kicking, hitting harder, banging head, anything to get attention, it’s SO important not to give in while these attention seeking behaviors are happening. Just WAIT until he is calm/quiet, and have someone else model & prompt “want mama?! MAMA!” In a nice tone of voice & you give them all the praise & attention! He will then see what gets moms attention & what doesn’t. Overly praise & model the behaviors & targets you want to see & decrease attention & even consequences for the negative behaviors & you should eventually see a shift in behaviors! :) hang in there mama! You can do it!

Show him WHAT to do with the cars! Sometimes kids throw things when they’re unsure of what to do with it so show them other fun alternative things to do than throw objects and toys!

Oh no! Try ignoring the throwing all together! Often times children just want attention and they do this to get negative attention, so what you want to do is make sure to give lots of positive attention for doing appropriate things with toys and absolutely no attention for the throwing
