Well , step 1 , send the missus out for a few hours and preheat your kitchen oven to full heat . Usually 250 deg.. Step 2 . Throw your spring onto an oven proof tray and place in oven for 2 hours. Step 3 . Remove from oven when time is up and let tray cool on a bench top. NOTE: do NOT cool spring wire under water lest it goes brittle like glass and will fail. Hope this explains the process sufficiently.....Regards .

Thank you for sharing this man's secret, hope you don't mind if this woman learns it. Would you be so kind as to answer two questions. How is this spring used? Is there a way to do the first bend without making one of those ugly slider things?

Ugly ?? You are probably right 😊 , you may be able to repurpose an old bench vice to do the squash in operation.
