A few people rightly pointed out safety. I wanted to pin this comment to make clear that you MUST follow safety protocols when using any laser or any high powered tool. This kit comes with glasses so please wear them. Wear a mask, use proper ventilation and never leave it unattended. Thanks guys!

Great video! Really informative and seemed quite unbiased The one thing I would say is even though you’ve got a cover for the laser this isn’t fool proof and having a redundancy makes everything safer. The ideal scenario is to have the entire unit encased. All it takes is a small piece of something reflective and you got blinding lasers bouncing everywhere like a scene from mission impossible And just reiterating about the fumes. Laser cutting produces formaldehyde vapour which is super super bad for you. Active ventilation is almost a must for this kind of thing

If I needed a vid thoughtfully considering the hobby benefits of a laser cutter then this one has the general, the specific and natural humour too. The laser cutter seems an ideal all-in-the-box solution and I could see myself really enjoying really worthwhile projects. The vid is proof if further proof were needed that supporting the patreon for content and analysis this good was just plain the right choice, as hobbyists we/I need content this good. Can't afford one over a better 3D printer, and don't have the room for it but I certainly now know what I'm missing and if that changes I'm having one. Great vid, gold stars for mindful reviewing, integrity in the face of getting really cool free stuff and geordie humour ;0)

Will, great content, and love the shout-out at the end! No, no luck with primer removal yet (for anyone interested: used blue, black and wraithbone primers on GW models just to test things out, I'm 60 and coming back to models and gaming after 50 years.... isopropyl alcohol and simple green got the acrylics off fairly well, but the GW primers haven't come off after 24 hours soaking and light brushing with each separately of 70% alcohol, then simple green, then grain alcohol AND even 24 hours of brake fluid... I'll send pictures to the Patreon, its very interesting to me). Not worth using anything stronger for health considerations... but it's been a fun experiment!

Citadel primers contain acetone which usually strips even though it melts into the plastic. I could depend on number of costs that were originally applied. Happy to defer to anyone else on this one. @@thestateofplay2023 I actually got frustrated and put a space marine and tyranid in acetone, it sure worked on the paint, but after the night only had two globs of plastic left 🙂. I'm usually asleep before they get any further. I love the humor you put in your videos, and this one convinced me I need a laser engraver. I think it would enjoy a happy home in my shop, right next to the forge. Trust me, the ventilation system can handle the coal-powered forge, so some wood smoke will be no problem. And since I already know Illustrator... One question you didn't address, though: How do I convince my wife to let me spend that much money?

Regarding health and safety for every laser cutter... As I understand it, you should always wear proper safety glasses when the laser is operational (this thing will make you blind) and never leave the room, because it can start a fire. Ideally it also should be in an enclosure with ventilation (and a fire suppression system)... A lot of things to consider for a little mdf terrain machine...
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, this thing came with glasses and I agree on the enclosure but putting it inside would then obscure any view of any fire. Bit weird that one. And the way I saw it, in my garage with both doors open gave me more ventilation than an enclosure would have given as it was all blowing the same way anyway. 🤔
@kai_the_shark9044
@kai_the_shark9044 11 ай бұрын
@thestateofplay2023 I came looking for the original comment to make sure it was made. But to respond to your comment. The enclosure is very important and most have windows to see in. No offense but your video can be dangerous. Along with these "lasers for consumers" products. Lasers are no joke and can do serious bodily harm. Including the blinding mentioned above. Even while not looking at it the laser can reflect and well hope you enjoy being blind. Not to mention burns from the laser. These are not just a tool like a 3d printer. These are seriously powerful and dangerous power tools. Even while in the room and not looking/ near the laser you must still take proper safety measures. I know this video is probably a requirement for a sponsor as you receive it for free, so I understand this video will probably stay up. All I ask is in the future fully research the dangers and safety factors for a product. As a public figure it is important to let people know the dangers of what you are doing and the mitigation process. Others will take what you do at face value and may be injured as a result. Looking up how to use something vs the safety and dangers of something are vastly different. Please do better next time I will still be supporting you, however with a more critical eye. Making a mistake, even a grevious one can be done by ignorance and not malice. Be careful in the future. Take this as a learning experience. However if another grevious mistake is made again in a short time, it will need to be attributed to malice, along with retroactively attributing this one as well. You seem like a nice guy so I would like to attribute it to ignorance, but only time will tell.
@puppeli
@puppeli 11 ай бұрын
@@kai_the_shark9044 everyone knows lasers are dangerous. We all can remember being told that even low power laser pointers can blind you. And unlike a small laser pointer in a key chain, the laser in a laser cutter burns wood! Of course everybody will be careful... That said, if one has kids, it would be a good idea to lock up your work room (or garage) whenever you leave.
@kai_the_shark9044
@kai_the_shark9044 11 ай бұрын
@puppeli it isn't about the knowledge that it is dangerous. Knives are dangerous. Animals are dangerous. Many things are dangerous, and many people know that. The important part is the safety precautions. Those were virtually non-existant.
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 11 ай бұрын
@@kai_the_shark9044 The vast majority of stuff we use in this hobby is unsafe. Hobby knives, razor saws, 99% alcohol, drills, resin is highly toxic, enamel paint fumes, white spirit, airbrush thinner is flammable. Couple these with ordinary household power tools, gas stoves, boiling hot water etc. Safety is of paramount importance in every endeavour and I absolutely agree with you. However, one has to assume a level of competence in people who enjoy this hobby. That they would use all the tools correctly, as directed in the instructions and keep themselves safe. This is the first time I used a laser cutter. I took all precautions as I would assume others would with any power tool. I unplug and remove the laser head when finished. 👍🏼 Edit: I’ve pinned a comment to the top to hopefully alleviate any of your concerns.

Love my laser cutter. It has made so many projects practical and really helped out my wife with making Hats. I just started terrain making with it (something that I use to only do on 3d printers). I've used one for nearly 3 years now and I've made everything from card boxes, jewelry, Hook & Brush stands. They are pricy, especially a good one. I would personally never recommend a cutter without an enclosure and ventilation system. That means your spending more but the lack of safety on ones is just asking to go blind or have some other injury occur.

I see what you’re saying and I’d generally agree but there’s no safety features on a chainsaw. Safety is more about the user rather than the tool. After all a car is the most dangerous machine in the world in the wrong hands. 👍🏼

@@thestateofplay2023 Chainsaws do come with safety features though. Kickback Guard's, Chain Brake, Throttle Lock, Chain Catcher, Hand Guard. I appreciate you making the other comment about safety. Its just one of those things where we don't live in a world where safety is left solely to the consumer any more. Companies now have an obligation to make dangerous product as safe as possible when selling to an uneducated consumer. Cars come standard with anti collision technology now. My wife wouldn’t appreciate me stinking up the garage. I love the detail you went into about illustrator and coloring the curves. That’s how I’d use it, so I’d probably just buy this model because it seems to come with everything.

Yes, the garage now has a lingering smell of burnt MDF. But no more than a bought MDF kit smells. Tbh an air freshener spritzed it right up. The side door and main door create a kind of airflow suction effect which pulls out the smoke.

I've been looking for a laser cutter and this model is now highly on my radar. My only issue is the fumes, so I'd have to figure out a good way to deal with that. All that being said, are you planning on making some videos on how to design files? Or, do you have some videos that you likedwhen learning how to do to draw these files for cutting? I've been looking them up but I figured you might have some helpful videos seeing how easily you made it look. Thanks for the videos!
@thestateofplay2023

If I’m honest I couldn’t find any videos. I’ve been using illustrator since it came out so I’m pretty quick. But basically if you buy 3mm MDF then all the joins (tabs) just need to stick out by 3mm. And the length of anything you make just needs reduced by the same 3mm. As for the MDF fines. Yes, they’re toxic. Two trees have an enclosure which I spotted this afternoon but I imagine anything flame retardant with a fan attached to a tube would work the same.

It is an extremely dangerous piece of equipment even when fully kitted with fire systems, ventilated enclosures, and all the safety gear, and the one presented in the video has none of that. Bench open like that may blind you, it may burn your house. It is not worth the risk. Save some more money and buy one that is up to the safety standards. Disagree. Based on this video, I pulled the trigger and bought a TT laser cutter. I also bought the optional smoke tent box and fan. Easy enough to splice it into my airbrush ventilation. My TT laser cutter is just fine all these months later after regular use, plus some trial and error. But then, I still have every video game console I've ever owned in perfect working order, including my original NES, Genesis, and PS1 - so, I've managed to maintain these for some 30 years? I mention this because I have become aware that some people just break electronic gadgetry. And/or have to buy the newest, latest, and greatest new gadget. And/or don't particularly take care of tech. 🤷‍♀️ Regardless, I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. Time saving, yes. But has truly unlocked creative possibilities because I, too, can draw digitally, and it's exciting to envision something and then make it.
