-38 Degree Insulated Tent Camping

I pulled out the old Otter Vortex insulated ice fishing tent and my big buddy heater and braved the cold for a night of camping. I was hoping to test it out in -40, but it only got down to -38. Cabbage rolls and cabbage roll soup for dinner and we had lots of camping beers to try and keep us psychologically warm.

I noticed that too. Grew up in a place where winters regularly got to -20 F. Heard that sound and immediately knew it was really cold. It's interesting that's a thing. Like how you can tell the difference between hot and cold water by the sound of it being poured alone.

@@fv7594 not entirely true. We Canadians have true cold or feels like stat. A measure of temp, wind speeds and humidity levels. -20c in Alberta is generally considered not as rough as -20c in Ontario on average days, for example.
@gabrielsavoie8780
@gabrielsavoie8780 10 ай бұрын
@@fv7594 It's not as simple. 50% humidity at 35°C isn't the same as 50% humidity at -5°C. The humidity percentage you see on weather reports is a relative unit. If you tried to put as much water into the air on a -5°C day as there is on a 35°C day, it would condense and it would fall out of the sky. This is (basically) how snow machines work by spraying lots of water into freezing cold air. Look up the dew point article on wikipedia and/or the Psychrometric chart for a detailed understanding.

You can camp comfortably in very cold temperatures using regular cheap tents, if you use multiple tents inside of each other. I placed a 3-man tent inside of a 5-man tent inside of an 8-man tent. The multiple tent shells around you help insulate a lot. Outer tent stops wind, inner airspace between tents helps retain body heat too.
@deborahcurtis1385

You should be able to do that inside a truck or large van, like a furniture removal size. I watched someone on YT sleeping overnight in one of those but he was just in a doona over a mattress. He froze all night and looked terrible the next day. I thought at the time I'd put a 2 person tent inside the van.... he would've been fine with that.
@Joeyfingis

Sending you a huge hug. I lost my only child 12 years ago. You are in the early days. Shock actually helps a bit into your second year. The torture eases with time but of course our lives are changed forever. If you don't already have a support group of fellow bereaved parents, check out The Compassionate Friends. There is probably a chapter in your area or not far away. It is by and for bereaved parents. It is totally free and there is no other agenda to it. Not designed to be religious, not a cult, just parents from all walks of life coming together to support each other. We learn how to survive. Meeting people further ahead who have risen from extreme tragedies and are able to live normal-ish lives now certainly gave me hope. May you get all the support you need on this worst journey anyone could have.

Hey Steve been watching your videos forever and it broke my heart about your wife..that I actually had to stop watching for a while. My mom passed away in her sleep February 27 of 21. It was out of nowhere, I found her passed away in bed. Luckily she just looked like she was still sleeping. It just breaks me man that you had to go through that. My mom was 69 and her birthday was just a few weeks before, I'm 42 and was at her house because was laid off because of covid. She had a enlarged heart that she never saw a doctor for. I just want to tell you. That in time things will somewhat get normal but you will always miss that loved one. The first year when you look back will be a blur. I'm on my 2nd year and still thinking of her everyday and what she said the night before. Stay strong bud. Holidays are always the hardest.

I'm in Iowa where there's a blizzard warning for the weekend. Wind chills are -34 right now. Couldn't pay me enough to sleep in a tent during this weather. Thanks for your efforts to entertain us, guys. We appreciate it. Merry Christmas to you all. See you next year.

My 3 cats are doing fine in their tent rapped around a box stuffed with bedding right now. Wind chill is near that -34 in Indiana. Enough insulation and wind blocking material and they do just fine all cuddled up.

Steve and Crazy Neighbor, thanks for the Very cold adventure! Entertaining and I learned a lot. I grew up in central Iowa, now in central Georgia. Amazing weather here. May get down to the mid teens here with this arctic blast. Verry cold for central Georgia. Ahhh a taste of winter in the plains. Take care, stay safe, Merry Christmas!!!

We went up into the Eastern Sierra for opening day trout fishing when I was a kid.... the dishcloth froze inside the trailer, and the water froze on the fishing line as we reeled in. After three days my mother was over ice cold wind whistling up under her in the pit toilet and we decamped for home. It started snowing on the road out. The people we were with were snowed in for five days. Glad you guys enjoyed yourselves!

you guys are hardcore. proper cold. england grinds to a halt with an inch of snow. my dad and i got stuck out in a snow storm one evening a few years back, when we saw all the increasing pile of cars build up at the bottom of a shallow hill on a country lane we decided we'd better park up somewhere safe away from all the moron drivers. slept in the car overnight in a pub car park and the next morning i had to beg a shovel off some workmen and dig two tracks out for our tyres to follow to get us back to the main road. we drove home and the daylight revealed all the carnage of the night before with hundreds of stuck vehicles.

I love this channel more than any of the other outdoor ones. Steve is so real and doesn't have all the gear that is out of my budget. He's doing it like all of us would. A great example is that second shovel they have to clear snow.....I use that for moving dirt all summer long and shovelling in the winter. I also love the cooking from the Mr. Heater, so cool.

I do tedious, repetitive computer work. Just leaving you channel on in the background, and checking in on my coffee brakes makes my day. Steve, your content is perfect. I feel it's obvious you are not pretending to be other than yourself. Charmingly polite, which no one can fake. A testament of your character is also your Crazy Neighbour. Such a nice guy would not be friends with a bad dude.

I’m sure a lot of us remember when you bought the acreage and you mentioned about future camping adventures there. It’s nice seeing you do that now in the last couple of videos with the treehouse and now this one. It’s been a tough time for you but pretty much every one who follows you are with you in spirit and wish you nothing but the best. For what it’s worth, Merry Christmas to you and CN, mate. Stay strong and stay close to family and friends who will be there for you. Cheers.
