Tarp Wall Tent Camping

With the expert help of Crazy Neighbor I taped together some tarps and ratchet straps and made some form of Frankenstein wall tent, and went camping! The project actually turned out far better than I had originally thought. We had one of my standby camping meals of onion burgers. Some rain fell through the evening and overnight, but not too much to dampen our spirits.

Funny story: i just was in a small beer market in Russia (I'm American), and when I grabbed a few beers I absentmindedly said aloud "a couple of step twos" (I had just watched one of your videos while on an airport express train from Vladivostok to Artem), and a Russian guy a few feet away said "Hunker Down" in quite a strong accent. Apparently he watches KZfaq to practice English, and he also is a fan of your channel. The "step two" helped me make a new friend in this far-flung middle of nowhere!

@@Andrew-uw5gz you're more than free not to believe the story. Doesn't change the fact that it happened 😁 Maybe you should get out, travel the world some. You'd be surprised at how many obscure references random people understand. Having lived abroad since 2013, I've made many friends from references to KZfaq personalities, movies, songs, etc.

Ever since I started watching Steve I've gotten more into the camping and cabin videos. I have to say I appreciate Steve's down to earth kinda approach and the fact he really talks to you. He kinda seems more like a friend and less like a host...ish/KZfaqr guy.

The funny part is that my idea of camping is a Fairfield Inn...I have no desire to camp outdoors at all, but I really enjoy Steve's videos. I have a feeling what you see on here is very much the way he is in person. It's not about him as much as it is the shared experience.

I think part of the enjoyment of watching a camping with steve video is the fact he doesn't pretend to be an outdoorsman or survivalist. He uses propane heaters in every type of shelter and makes his fires by pouring as much accelerant as available to make sure a whole log catches fire. No flint, no fancy knots, and beer - the way most of us actually camp.

We all went to college, had good careers and managed to stay within about 100 miles of each other. Now, we are all finally retired and are fortunate to have land on which to get together and camp. Good campfire subject convo on shoeslaces coming untied. There's been university studies on this. "In a new study, they found that the repeated impact of a shoe hitting the ground when we walk or run loosens the knot. Then, as we swing our legs, the whipping motion of the laces' free ends pulls them apart." There's at least 335,000 googles on how to stop that. Thanks guys. Been happening on my right foot for years. Now I know what to do.

Yes, I love it! Hearing that discussion of "How many ways are there to tie a shoelace?" made me immediately think of an old website: "Ian's Shoelace Site" which describes all sorts of interesting knots. It had me realize I had often been tying a "granny knot" instead of a proper square knot when doing the standard two-loop tie and now my laces don't come untied.

Just discovered this channel recently and I'm loving it. I especially loved the "homemade raft on the North Saskatchewan River" videos as I spent 17 years living in Cold Lake, Alberta and did a fair bit of canoeing. And Crazy Neighbour is such a wonderful camping companion, you're lucky to have him. After the shoelace campfire conversation (which killed me), he now needs his own sweatshirt... you can wear "Hunker Down" and he can have one that says "How's your aglets?" hahaha By the way, the world needs a Hunker Down cookbook... just sayin'.

When I was a kid (about 50 years ago), my parents and I would go camping in the Oregon forest camps. Our tent was a sheet of clear plastic that my Dad fashioned into a "lean to." We were comfy, dry, and camping. 🏕 Good memories.
@danthomas9077

Same here, did a lot of camping as a kid 50+ years ago in Washington and I can't remember us ever owning a tent, it was cheap plastic tarps or nothing, my dad would say tents are for wimps. One time we wished we would of had a tent, we hiked into 7 lakes basin in the Olympic Mountains, all we had was the cheap plastic tarp on a rope between 2 trees, a hurricane force storm came through that night and we ended up huddled in a pile holding onto what tarp we could, rode that storm out like that all night, we could feel the tree roots moving underneath us the wind was blowing so hard and moving the trees around. We woke to find Bear tracks all around us in the mud, a bear must of circled us a couple times sniffing us. Everything we had was soaking wet, couldn't find anything dry enough to start a fire, there was an outhouse with cedar shingles and I tore a couple off the back of it that were dry to start a fire. That's when a forest ranger showed up! He'd been watching us with binoculars from his wall tent around the lake, we didn't even know he was there, he suggested calling in a helicopter to get us off the mountain, said we were grossly unprepared, my dad told him we were fine, we got a fire started, that's when he suggested we could get a ticket for damaging government property for ripping shingles off the outhouse as he'd seen me do it. The ranger was nice enough to let us dry out some of our stuff in his wall tent, it had a wood stove in it, it was fancy, surprised he didn't have a washer and dryer. We dried our stuff and stayed another day, roughing it was fun, but my Dad eventually bought a 40 foot school bus and we converted it to a camper, but that's a whole other story/s ! ;)
