How to make soap: Making our Green Tea & Cucumber naturally coloured cold process layered soap

Today we are creating "Green Tea & Cucumber" scented, layered soap. The soap is naturally coloured using Indigo, Annatto and activated charcoal and we have gone with a slanted, layered design. The top of the soap is testured and then decorated with Juniper Berries and Linden leaves. Today's soap has an amazingly fresh scent and feel to it.
This limited edition soap will be available to purchase on our website from midnight on 1st February 2021
We are using the 5lb loaf mold from Bramble Berry to create this design and this is the recipe that we used to fill our mold:
218g Sodium Hydroxide
480g Water
680g Olive Oil
198g Sweet Almond Oil
114g Castor Oil
368g Coconut Oil
150g Shea Butter
76g Cocoa Butter
2g Activated Charcoal clay
1g Indigo Dye
11g Annatto Seeds (to infuse in 1/3 of the Olive Oil)
5g Juniper Berries
4g Linden Leaves
40 g Green Tea & Cucumber Fragrance Oil

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the natural GREEN made by mixing Annatto infused soap with INDIGO --- I had no idea! I love the shade of green! Instead of using powdered indigo with infused Annatto oil, I mixed infused Annatto oil with infused Indigo oil .. it came out great! I just want the green! I can't stand the orange Annatto oil by itself, I don't like orange soaps, but I am always lookign for natural greens. Thank you so much.

Hello Anne! Am amazed at the green color you get from blending indigo & very orange annatto! I imagined the result would be a khaki olive - but instead you got the a nice bright green! Your videos are always fun to watch!

Thank you Cathy. To be honest, the first time I made this soap the colour surprised me too! I think it is because I added a slightly higher ratio than usual of Indigo, which in turn made it come out this way!

Beautiful soap! Here in America, it's a stereotype that we are all crazy about beer, football and burgers... I hate beer and football, and although I will eat burgers (they're ok), they are not my favorite. But I actually DO like tea and cucumbers. Granted, via DNA and family tree research, most of my immigrant ancestors were from England, lol.

American in the south and I love my black sweet tea iced but I also love hot teas and both with cream! I miss the African restaurant in GA I lived near. They had a peachy coconut tea.

Wow, the green you have made on this is stunning! Still pretty new to soap making myself but have been looking for ways to create a natural green that I like, so far failing miserably. This green is GORGEOUS! I will have to give oil infusing a go :)

You can try spirulina, it's natural product and will give you lovely green

What a BEAUTIFUL soap!! Massive kudos! I love your accent, it's very pretty. Have you ever made any shampoo / conditioner bars? I'm trying to look into that. Shampoo bars are 1 thing, but I need to find a good conditioner recipe for my daughters' curly hair. Thx again for your video. Really enjoyed it.

Hi Michelle and thank you! I am trialing a few shampoo bars at the moment which seem to be coming along quite nicely. Unfortunately conditioner bars are another thing entirely! We have been trying to find a way of making one with natural and palm free ingredients but this is proving to be really difficult as so many of the natural ingredients needed are derived from palm. We are still hunting around for a recipe we can trial and if we ever do come up with one we will probably post it on here for everyone to see :-)

Your tea dilemma is like my coffee dilemma. I'm the only one in my immediate and extended family who doesn't drink coffee. In my culture we are given coffee from the moment we can drink out of a cup. I'm Puerto Rican!

I'm loving your videos and am learning so much! Thank you! Can you please tell me, is there a difference between Indigo powder and what you used in this video which you called Indigo dye? And also, if indigo dye is a different product, is it still considered all-natural? Thank you!

Hi Sally, Indigo dye and Indigo powder are different to each other. Indigo powder gives more of a blueish/grey colour in soap whereas Indigo dye gives a really bright, vibrant blue (and is much more expensive). Both are natural ingredients derived from the "Indigofera Tinctoria" plant :-)

May I know how long did you use to infuse the annatto seeds in the oil to obtain such lovely red? Thank you in advance!🙏🙏 I always love your soaps because you use natural colorants! In this video, I like the tea towel you used to tilt your mould, the design looks classic to me! Hi May. We use the quick infusion method for our infused oils, which involves placing the infused oils into a slow cooker filled with water and turning on to high. We leave the oils in the slow cooker for around 6 hours and then turn it off and let them cool. This is what helps us to create these really vibrant oils really quickly! Yes, our main focus is on natural colourants as I love them! That said, we do have a couple of upcoming videos in which we are experimenting with mica just to add a bit of variation into our channel and soap range! Coffee is even worse than tea in my opinion! A long time ago I worked in a well know coffee shop and every now and again they would ask us to taste the new coffees so we knew what they were like if customers asked. I always used to get disapproving looks from the area managers when I refused to try them!

I am not much a a fan of hot drinks really! I like a mulled Cider before Christmas but other than that the only hot drink I really consume is an odd one - just water! I don't know anyone else who likes to drink a cup of hot water, but for some reason, I do! Strange, I know! No, we haven't ventured into hot process yet. We may try it at some point but probably not anytime soon as the rest of our soaping keeps us busy enough at the moment!

Maybe that's to do with the way in which you brew coffee in the US. No disrespect, but it's like dishwater. Try an Italian espresso after a nice meal, with a bit of sugar to take the edge off the bitterness. If it's evening, treat yourself and add a splash of brandy, too.

I have never tried either US coffee or an actual Espresso in Italy (though I have tried an Espresso in the UK and still wasn't keen). Think I would probably just take the brandy on its own! :-D

Can anyone help me. My soap mixture gets really thick really fast so I need to be extremely fast in poring it into the mold because it becomes like jelly in less than 2 min. I just started making soaps so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Hello Estera. It could be a number of things (such as your recipe, the temperature that you soap at etc) but I would say the most likely cause would be your fragrance oil or essential oil choice. I would recommend making your soap without any scent at all to test and see if it pours ok or if it still thickens. If it does still thicken then it may mean that you are soaping at a temperature that is a little high or that you aren't using enough water in your recipe.

I live in the southern United States, I can't stand black eyed peas, collard greens or pork and beans which you call baked beans. (Here in the States baked beans are made with ketcup, vinegar, brown sugar and generally molasses. ) Why do you soap so warm in the UK? I soap at room temperature here. Typically between 76-85 degrees. I love cucumber sandwiches and tea!

Hi Jill! Baked Beans are in my top 3 of most hated foods! I don't even like people cooking them around me as can't stand the smell of them either. I tend to soap at different temperatures depending on what I am creating. If it is a Goat's Milk soap I will soap at room temperature but I do go higher for other soaps. The reason for this is that because I use natural colourants I like the soap to go through gel phase and soaping at a higher temperature helps this to happen. I also find I get less soda ash if I soap at a warmer temperature. It does come down to personal preference though and I know of a few UK soapers who soap at lower temperatures than me :-)

Yes, the lutefisk, in the upper Midwest. How those Norwegian people can eat it is beyond me! I wonder if lutefisk would be usable in soap as it's made with lye. Fish and lye. Yuck. It would be unsellable because of its fishy smell. Ha! A dog or cat might like it though. God bless.

A stereotype of Russians drinking loads of vodka and dance with bears on the streets of Moscow is false. According to the latest sociology, Russians drink beer more than anything else, which they produce many types and variety.also, the tendency among the younger generation is to be tea total..Speaking of tea, Russians drink more tea and longer in history than British. Cucumbers are vastly consumed not in sandwiches but in salads. So there!!!
