So this video is a touch on the long side! Grab a drink and stick with it though, as I cover a lot today!
Today we will be showing you how we create a selection of infused oils and how we then use those infused oils to create a selection of beautiful, natural colours in cold process soap.
In the first part of today's video we will be using Alkanet root, Annatto seeds, Indigo powder and Madder root powder and infusing them into Olive Oil. We will be using the quick method, which involves using a slow cooker to gently heat the infusions and we will be covering every step of how we prepare these oils. We cover how much plant material we use, how to prepare the infusions and we show you us covering every step of the process.
In the second part of the video, we show you us creating bars of soap using the infused oils. We create some beautiful pink, purple and yellow shades in the soaps and the best thing is, they are entirely natural colourants! We also show you how well the colours stick after an eight week cure time and explain a little about how to try and ensure you get the best, brightest colours from your ingredients.
If you enjoy our videos and soap making tutorials please do give us a like and subscribe :-)
We will be uploading new videos every Friday and possibly the odd midweek bonus video here and there!

@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany oh I love her too! Thank you! What would you advise to make a darker colour with the indigo or alkenet if you wanted to achieve a deeper colour please? Im after a navy type colour but trying to avoid mica x
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
@@quietbelle8662 She's great isn't she! Total soap goals! To make a navy I tend to use a mix of Indigo dye and blue Indigo powder (they sound similar but create very different shades of blue) I suppose I use a ratio of about 90% blue Indigo powder to 10% Indigo dye. I find that this gives quite a nice navy colour - not quite the same as what could be achieved with mica but a decent mica free substitute!

This was very helpful! It’s great to see the usage rates for plant material vs olive oil that you use. I have been visually measuring, which makes it difficult for me to replicate the exact color the infused oil creates. Thank you for sharing!

This is really cool! I had read about people doing a cold process oven thing before, but it seemed weird and complicated and likely to lead to over heating. Your advice on promoting gel phase made a lot of sense, and I’ll definitely try that next time I use a colorant. I’m definitely a hobby soap maker, but I’m starting to play around with designs.
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany

It is definitely worth giving a go and it is as simple as pre-heating the oven then turning it off before putting the soap in but leaving the oven light on. This has worked well for us every single time except once..... On this one occasion, Wayne forgot there was soap in the oven and turned it on to 180c - this lead to a very messy volcano of soap and a lot of curse words! When there is any doubt that we may remember now, I stick a piece of paper on the outside of the oven to remind us there is soap inside!

Thank you so much for this video, you have been very very very informative, These colours make me feel happy inside, for the subtle colours are BEAUTIFUL. I have not long bought these four powders myself so I will add them to my soaps and explore. I wonder if the colours like indigo for example will be more vibrant if it was put into the mixed Lye Solution instead of the oil? The Lye would have a strong effect on it I am sure. And regarding infusing the olive oils - I wonder if leaving the jars to stand in a cupboard for 2-3 weeks (not so long as nearly 2 months), then heating the jars on the slow cooker 2-3 hours instead will also draw more pigment colour into the oil? I don’t really want to slow cook for 6 hours so am considering a combo cold & both method, shortening the process a little more. My thoughts, and experiments to do very shortly. Much love. 🔮

Hello Anne, I’m typing this from way way across the miles from Australia and have been enjoying your KZfaq vids sooo much but I’m actually needing your help if you can. I watched this natural infusion vid and note you infuse 5 gr of alkanet in 100gr oil. I’m ok making that infusion , but it’s how to use the infusion that stumps me. I have done 3 different trial batches and my trial soaps are soooo dark, almost black and not what want. I’m after lavender coloured bars. So my question is, what percentage of your 100gr of infused oil do you use into your normal oils? Could you give me an idea how much infused oil to put in this batch, which is my usual batch: I use 750gr of rice bran oil and 250gr of tallow , so total 1000gr oils. How much alkanet infused oil do I put in? All of the 100gr of the infused oil? Or part of the infused oil? So reduce my oils to 900gr , then add the infused 100gr? Please help me , it’s doing my head in. Thank you so much in anticipation 🙏🙏🙏

Brilliant video, when you put the raw batter in the jars to sit in the water, do the colours get stronger the longer you leave them ? or do they reach a point that it doesnt matter how long you leave them, that is the colour they are ? xx
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Amanda, We do find that they infuse a little better if we leave them for longer, though I think there would definitely be a point where they wouldn't get any deeper. I know with the slow infusion method some people leave their oils for months to infuse and say it gives a better colour, but I have never been patient enough to try that! xx

@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
I don't see why not :-) Just bear in mind that as Olive Pomace can have a green tint in may affect the final colour that you achieve. Sweet Almond my be a better option than pomace as it is lighter in colour.

Hi thanks for the great info! So nice to see what colour each becomes after curing. I’m wondering how much oil in total was used for the 5 g of colorant. If I wanted to colour a total of 1000g of oil how much colorant would be needed? Thx!

Fantastic examples! I really appreciate your enthusiasm and attention to small details! Thank you - every video inspires me! I was curious about the olive oil portion - just to confirm - this infusion would be made with the entire portion of the olive oil you would be using for a full batch - and then just adding the other oils after correct?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, thank you so much! It is so lovely to hear that we are inspiring you as we always hope our videos inspire people. Yes, I tend to make up a large batch of the infused olive oils and then when it comes to making soap, I just weigh out the entire portion of Olive oil from the infused batch and add all the other oils to it. :-)

@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany I was so giddy over this video and your other video about natural colorants - I forgot to ask about the shelf life of those prepared oils. In addition - I believe you mentioned in an earlier post that adding the essential oils to clay colored soaps helped to extend the life of the scent in the soap, as they adhere better?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I know that feeling Kate! As long as the jars/bottles that you store the infused oils in are properly clean and sterilised and the oil is kept out of direct sunlight, the infusion should be good to use until the given expiry date of the Olive oil. Adding essential oils to clay is something that is recommended to help anchor the scent into the bar a little better and help it to stick in the soap. Some people swear by it for helping scent to stick and others think it makes little difference. It is definitely something worth experimenting with though :-)

I find Madder does better adding straight to lye, and not infusion. And Alkanet needs a much higher amount in its infusion. They aren’t all used at the same amounts. Paprika infusions can give a lovely orange or near red if used at a high percentage.
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany Жыл бұрын
We sometimes add madder to the lye water and sometimes to the oil, it depends what shade we are hoping to achieve. It seems redder and deeper when added to the lye and paler when infused in oil. We always use 5% for our Alkanet infusion as love the very pale, purple hint it gives but if you prefer a stronger, deeper purple then yes, definitely add more and make a stronger infusion :-)
