While Fenix is best known for their extensive lineup of everyday carry (EDC) and tactical flashlights, in recent years they’ve also experimented with bike lights. In this review we’ll be looking at their latest bike light, the BC26R headlight. The light has a retail price of $89.95 and has an impressive 1600 Lumen output from a single Luminus LED. As with other Fenix lights, the BC26R features a replaceable battery with threaded tail cap. Although Fenix includes a 5000 mAh ARB-L21-5000 Li-ion battery with the light, the BC26R can be used with 18650 batteries using the Fenix ALF-18 battery holder. Despite the non-integrated design, the BC26R carries a IP68 rating which ensures the headlight can be used in any weather condition.
The tool-free quick-release handlebar mount Fenix includes with the BC26R should be familiar to those who have owned Fenix bike lights in the past. Even though it uses a proprietary slide on design with tab to lock it in place which means you cannot mount the BC26R on out-front mounts or other accessories, it’s still one of our favorite simple handlebar mounts. We’d describe the tool-free design as a swinging-cam style as the rear is hinged on that you can simply swing into place and hand tighten. This is much easier to use than Magicshine’s handlebar mounts as it can be installed or removed in a few seconds. The mount also allows for side to side angle adjustments of roughly 30° to each side with indexed positions. Multiple rubber spacers are included to handle different round handlebar diameters.
It’s easy to tell Fenix is primarily a tactical and every-day carry (EDC) flashlight company rather than a dedicated bike company as the BC26R uses the same elongated flashlight form factor with metal housing and simply adds a handlebar adapter to the base. It’s a simple design that’s easy to hold and allows the headlight to easily be used as a flashlight off the bike. While the form factor is very similar to the Fenix BC21R we previously reviewed, the darker finish and bronze-like power button give the Fenix BC26R a more premium look. Strakes along the sides of the body add a little more visual detail and help with heat dissipation...

@@TheSweetCyclists Agreed. Removable batteries should be used whenever possible. I own a 'china special RN 1500', it's fairly easy to pop the lens off and disassemble with a screwdriver. Inside is a bog standard 18650 spot welded to its daughterboard. Theoretically replaceable but spot welding batteries isn't the easiest to get right. There's zero reason it couldn't have just used a removable system w/ a simple terminal on one end and a spring on the other. I'd hazard a guess that the actual RN 1500 is built much the same. I don't mind spending 80$ on a light but it needs to be serviceable to a degree. It's not just olight; this integrated battery 'feature' is the dominant design trend with your only other options being these Fenix lights or using a normal flashlight. As for the colors, I feel like it feeds in to the popular perception of the average american that bikes are for try hard sporting (or kids riding on sidewalk). Black = fast, but it ignores that there might be moms, older people, mustache hipsters, etc on bikes who may not even consider themselves 'cyclists'. Cycling in the US needs a major re-branding. The go-fast aero carbon bikes can stay but there needs to be room full fendered, relaxed geometry, comfortable commuters.

The FENIX mount is the BEST in the entire bike light industry and well worth using ,(vs any garmin or gopro style mount). It is a rock solid mount: Ultra sturdy and ROTATABLE, (unlike just about any other bike light mount).This makes it very easy to swivel the beam out of the way of oncoming traffic. So, INMHO, their proprietary mount is a PRO, (vs a con). They sell the mounts separately and I have gratefully purchased additional ones for each of my bikes. On top of the incredible practicality of a swappable battery, Fenix's build quality is superb: I have thousands of hours on my BCR 21 V2 and it continues to impress. WHY use any other lights on the market? Fenix are simply the best out there...

@@twosix_00 You are right that Garmin mount is probably better, only because it is so well designed and universal. However, it does NOT allow the light to be swiveled 180 degrees on the handlebar which is a very useful feature when not blinding oncomers or wishing to illuminate the side of trails (to spot critters - lol!). Also, the Fenix is hands down the most solid piece of handlebar mount engineering, EVER. (Rock frigging solid after years of abuse).

@@twosix_00 A Fenix bcr21 v2. (from 2019 - YT link here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o5edZK-WndDcZIk.html ) 1000lumens, very well made and swappable 18650 battery. I'm a hardcore night rider and use this light on epic all-evening road, Mtn & cross/gravel rides. This light has illuminated THOUSANDS of hours of epic night rides on all manner of road, path and trail surfaces and has performed flawlessly, (with a pleasingly 'warm' / yellowish beam vs colder blue beam of most lights). The Fenix has been bulletproof for 3+ yrs - having accidentally dropped it from scary heights a couple of times, I have no complaints. Their latest lights (as in this video) are obviously the latest and greatest, however I'm more than satisfied with my trusty old bcr21 v2 (although it's got less top-end lumens than their newer models, it's a few ounces lighter and still satisfies with its lighting power). I cannot recommend Fenix enough, if only for their awesome build quality-to-price value ratio along with the sheer sensiblity of swappable 18650 batteries, (infinitely more practical than 90+% of the bike industry's non-removable batteries and much more eco-conscious as this saves future lights from going to landfill). The icing on the Fenix cake is their incredibly-well engineered handlebar mount which as you can clearly tell by now I'm a huge fan of👌. So in all fairness and to make a long rant of the bike light industry short, you cannot go wrong with one of these Fenix lights - they really are THAT GOOD and they make a mockery of most of the mainstream bike light brands, (and believe me, I've tried many brands).

Yea, it's strange they didn't include the simple "dual beam" lens from the BC21R V2.0. Regarding the tail light - if you're referring to the BC05R V2.0 it seems to be nearly identical to the BC05R we reviewed at the end of 2019 except for 15 lumen output vs 10. Personally I'd recommend a Magicshine Seemee taillight over the BC05R which isn't that bright and lacks side visibility.

I'm really glad they dumped it, it was the dumbest idea and did the exact opposite of what it promised to do, especially once you pick up speed. It made illuminating reflective surfaces further away almost impossible and it would effectively shorten the distance the beam reaches right in front of you. So in practice, it forces you to angle the light higher, which then blinds people in front of you. A more rounded cone shoots light further away directly in front of you, cuts it off on the sides and lets you angle the light lower. Combined with a diffuser, it just does a much better job then the cut-off for both preventing glare and actually seeing what's in front of you.

The fenix website, as start (*) next to the light BC26R, for the battery life of 3.5 hours. And underneath it says, Turbo output is measured in a total of runtime including output at reduced levels due to temperature design... So how many lumens does it give at 3.5 hours really ?
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists Жыл бұрын
The Fenix headlight has built-in thermal protection which means it will drop power if it gets too warm. That's why Turbo mode (or nearly any bike light at max power) will ramp down a bit. The actual lumen values depend on the temperature (i.e. ambient temperature + riding speed) so there isn't a single number. If you need 1000 lumen for extended periods of time, it's better to get a brighter light (2000 lumen for example) and run it at a lower setting.

@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists Жыл бұрын
All bike lights will reduce output in their maximum output modes as they heat up. It doesn't mean the 1600 lumen mode isn't useful though as your eyes adjust to the output. Other companies like Outbound Lighting actually have "adaptive" modes that are designed to ramp down and is something you hardly notice while riding.

No problem, glad the reviews are helpful. The Ray 2600 vs Fenix BC26R is an interesting comparison. The Ray 2600 is obviously brighter and has the "smart" mode feature (low output day mode and your choice for night). Runtimes will depend on your environment and selected modes but for any night time riding the 4 hour medium mode is probably what you should expect which slightly less than the equivalent mode for Fenix. I think it depends on what type of riding you do, if you need something brighter I would go with the Ray 2600, otherwise the replaceable battery of the Fenix is worth it.

Gotta be honest, the "downsides" are all actually positives. Really wouldn't want a bike light on a garmin mount, it just doesn't make sense as it removes on-the-go horizontal adjustment. And the Fenix mount is one of the best bike light mounts on the market. Long form factor is preferable to a wide form factor when storing the light in a pocket or a pack. And the cut-off present on some lights makes for a really bad light that forces you to point it higher (because otherwise you don't get enough light to see traffic signs and reflective elements on other bikes or cars), effectively defeating the purpose of the cut-off completely.

A Garmin mount makes sense when you have aero road bars (flat tops) and can't use the standard round bar mount. Not to mention, mounting a light to the bars on top, the bike computer usually gets in the way anyway with out front computer mounts. I plan on using a BC30 V2 for long distance events with a handlebar bag (very limited real estate in the bar area), so the standard mount still wouldn't work. The Fenix ALD-10 GoPro mount works like a charm and everything fits as I can shift the light forward, which was a huge concern. If you need "horizon adjustment" (but seriously, nobody is constantly adjusting the vertical orientation of the handlebar light during a ride when the gradient changes), use a helmet light in conjunction with the handlebar light. Years ago I ran a Cateye Double Shot helmet light and Triple Shot handlebar light, and I couldn't outrun the lights in any terrain, even over 40 mph. Used to get flashed by cars a lot though.
