I don't generally comment but honestly i felt your stress watching you checking your plants leaf by leaf. Its totally NORMAL!!! AND IM SO GLAD YOU WERE HONEST. It did help me alot!!! I do check my plants leaf by leaf and I think people would actually think im crazy, but yah, just a plant parent would understand. I have a 100+ plant collection and just discovered thrips 4 days ago.. So i totally feel you and feel FOR you! I did an organic treatment of neem oil+dish soap and water. I found thrips on maybe 5-6 of my 100+ collection but i treated them all. I started off really excited and after taking 7 hours i still wasn't done. 3 hours into the process it was getting to me. Now i have to repeat this whole thing in a week.. arghhh 😫 Im with you through this... Or through ur video atleast 😁 Lets all support each other getting rid of these buggers 👍👍👍 we just love our plant babies tooo much.

thank you so much for being honest -- ive been going through something super similar, with depression leading me to not check my plants as often and kind of pretending there aren't any problems...you're not being dramatic at all!! this is a total crisis, especially since it's all in your room. i have all of my plants in my studio too, so i totally get how stressful it is to see it and not deal with it. i really appreciate your honesty and would love to have more videos like this from you (hopefully not about more pests LOL) but truly, this is exactly what i needed to see to get a real life understanding of what i should do. cutesy warm 10 mins video about pests that just recommend a product and move are honestly largely useless when a crisis like this happens. thank you for sharing with us, and i hope you can get some rest soon!

So sorry Tate! I got thrips too in the beginning of really collecting house plants. It’s stressful at first but now if I get them it’s no big deal, if you have plants you’ll eventually get them. I remember feeling the way you do right now. Now that you’ve had them though you’ll learn how to treat them and what works for you. Good luck!

People (like me) need to watch videos like this before rushing into this hobby. I would not have bought so many plants if I knew they came with bugs. Definitely should buy one plant per two months basically. Unless you have that extra extra room for quarantine!

I can relate so much! Yesterday I started to take care of an infestation in my house.. I only saw it on 2 of my plants and I got so sad I even started to cry.. not only for the money I spent on them, but to see them not as happy as they used to be.. I hope you can save your babies and not get thrips again!

I know what you went through. I'm going through it now. I have thrips, spider mites, and I'm finding flat mites (aka false mites) on my hoyas. I've started treating with systemic and spraying with Captain Jack's dead bug killer. I'm treating my hoyas by using the warm bath method suggested by Betty Begonia. I'm so stressed and just want to sleep through the whole ordeal but I know that if I'm not proactive, I'll lose my plants. I think my micans are a goner and they were so pretty. We suck it up and do what we have to do.

Just discovered your channel and I ❤️ it! A few months ago I discovered thrips and spider mites 😬. I tried neem oil, but even when diluted, the smell was unbearable. I decided to get some green lacewing larvae, and it was the BEST thing! My husband was a little freaked out about the whole ‘beneficial insect’ thing 🙄, but it’s been 3 months now and we haven’t seen a single lacewing, thrip, or spider mite 🤞. I do appreciate your authenticity, humor, and wit. You were not being “dramatic” at all... you were being real, and that is so refreshing 😊

Feel your pain. I ve very little money and I ve slowly built a collection of 70 plants. Live in a small space and while plants do not touch , they’re close. Recently bought three plants all quarantined and turns out they have thrips after I placed with my veterans. I live in canada where we don’t have access to bug killers. I m so sad. I very much invested time (so much time) repotting with good soil products, new pots, checking daily. This feels like it exploded overnight. I just tossed 15 plants and am treating the rest. All my baby monsteras I grew from seed infested, tossed. My huge monstera and thai are now in my bathtub. .😩😩😩This is heartbreaking. Hope my hoyas arent infested and i have a 29 year old ficus tree and 6 ficus bushes. How the hell do you check those. I ll be following your journey. You are not alone in this. I have vowed never to buy another plant again.

Not dramatic at all!!!! 💙 You are so passionate about your plants and I know I am devastated when I get pests. It is natural, yes, but I still feel guilty though. Be kind to yourself! I think every plant parent learns about pests the hard way and we can only take on what we are emotionally able to at any given time. I let my collection of 100+ rare aroids get thrips and it took me a year to get rid of them all because I didn't have the emotional capacity to keep up the battle. You can do what you can do and plants are resilient (and even when they're not, they're just plants so don't feel bad if they die).

I know your pain. Yesterday I had something in the back of my head tell me I needed to repot my seltipicana, I knew it needed to be up-potted but was holding off. I walked over and grabbed it, not only had it been sitting in water 😲 (thankfully no root rot) but as I was getting ready to repot I saw it- webbing. 😵😩. I quickly pulled the webbing off, did some heavy spray washing and treated it. After that process, I set it aside and inspected everything on that whole shelf and cleaned it. I didn’t find anything else but because I was already doing the work I did some preventative spraying. Hope the rest of your plants do well and make a comeback. A side note, we’re not perfect, we don’t expect you to be. I appreciate the journey and the lessons we learn from each other more than perfection. Give yourself grace. 💚

Happy belated birthday!!! pests are so annoying I hope you get them under control :) I had spider mites thrips and mealy bugs all at once two weeks ago so that was interesting for a first pest experience... as of now I haven't seen anything but that doesn't mean I won't find them again soon

These things can fly and hop around everywhere so it's best to treat every plant. I'm a little crazy and paranoid when it comes to pests so the moment I noticed them on my plants I treated the soil with systemic, sprayed aggressively with insecticide, and when everything dried I poured DE over everything and left it for a few days LOL. Quite extreme but I don't have thrips anymore.

Thrips are not a root feeder. They're just on the leaves and flowers. They lay eggs in the plant tissues, and pupate on the soil surface. Diatomaceous earth would kill them as they emerge. They have preferred host plants, which is why they all targeted the same type of plant. However, they are polyphagous and absolutely will go to other plants. The black spots are their frass (poop). Treat monthly to keep the eggs from developing. But you didn't need to remove the roots from the soil, as thrips are not root feeding insects.. they just go after what they can see above ground. I have little tiny like brown clear bugs I can see crawling slowly on a few of my plants. So I treated a bunch today and even just chopped some to propagate and start fresh. I’ve been using neem and Castile soap

I know exactly what you’re going through but please don’t worry. I just had thrips and swear by Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew. Only one of my plants visually had thrips but I treated all my plants to play it safe. The infected plant I retreat once a week and it’s been well over a month that I’ve seen any pests or pest damage. So don’t worry and just keep treating your plants. 😊

I had thrips a couple of plants awhile ago. I freaked out and sprayed literally **all** of my plants with Captain Jack's, even the ones that didn't show signs of thrips. I think I caught it early and got rid of it before it became a major outbreak, but it was a nightmare.

Hi Tate. So I have over 200 plants and I also freak out a bit over pests, but I found a systemic treatment that I just add to the watering can when I water my plants. So the plant takes it up, and any pests that bite the plant will die from it. I found it on Amazon. Good luck, I hope you wipe out all those little suckers!

It’s normal to be emotional, plants are like our babies and parents never like to see their children sick. It’s not you being a bad plant parent tho, nobody is healthy all the time :)

I would be crying as well. I had a little break down when my plants were suffering. Treat everything like it has everything!!

It's better to treat them all as best you can and redo it a while after. I'm not sure what the life cycle of thrips are but to prevent reinfection its better to retreat them. It's also good to treat all new plants you get before you introduce them into your collection as not all nurserys are vigilant about pests and they have a lot of plants together its easier for them to have pests.

I am a fairly new plant mom too. I have used systemic on all my plants and although this will be the first true growing season for all my plants, I have not had any bug problems so far. Knock on wood. But, I highly recommend using it. Thrips scare the crap out of me.

If you feel a little bit overwhelmed by your pest I can recommend you to see this planttuber called "planet houseplant". in her houseplant winter tour 2021 she talks so calmly and relaxed about her pests with a little twist of British humor. It would not help you directly but al least maybe it can make you a little bit less stressful about it. Her channel is not that old but It made me smile with my own miserable pests.

I totally get it, pests suck. Every time I find spider mites on a plant, I felt like my world falls apart, haha. I recently bought a cat palm from a reputable nursery, took it home and sure enough 😣 I quarantine all my new plants now.

Poor you, it's such a pain!!! So the little round blobby ones are the larvae, and the longer ones are the more mature, and thrips can come in a bunch of colours. As others have said, the adults can fly, so yeah, unfortunately treating them is all is going to be the safest thing!!!

Ugh, so sorry you have to deal with this. Thrip are the worst. A couple of things to note - thrip look different at each stage of their lifecycle. When they are in the larva and pupa stages they'll appear a pale yellow or green color. When they mature to their adult stage they appear long and black. Once they are adults they can fly and will start attacking any plants in your collection that they find tasty, no matter how far away they are so it's important to treat every plant in that room. I would suggest getting some beneficial insects. That will make quick work of them. Also, the little black dots you see on the back of the leaves are the frass or droppings from the thrip. I hope this helps 🙂

I tryed so many things to treat Thrips and the only way that works for me is Diatomés Earth !!! Throw it on all your plants and its done and there is no danger for your plants.

I use systemic Bonide granules every few months in my plants. It automatically goes into the soil for new houseplants while they're in the mandatory quarantine period. It's worth it for the peace of mind it gives me.

My only solution for a big thrips problem: predatory bugs. Its easy, effectiv and not so time consuming like when threatening every plant for weeks. First shower the plant, get rid of some thrips than hang the container with the predatory bugs. And let it work. When the problem is just 1-3 plant or so, I will spray them and separate. Repeat for some weeks. And its okay, bad bugs are just a matter of time in every plant collection. Even in botanical gardens they are always present, and the plants a thriving because its all about the harmony between "good and bad" bugs. Also my routine: check plants every other week for bugs. Shower them once a month for reducing bugs problems and dust carpets. Good luck and health everybody!

Girl I feel you! I have over 400 plants and found spidermites on almost all pf them. I have spend the fast 4 days trying to treat all my plants. Im usually good at checking my Spidermite prone plants often but that was obviously a huge mistake and the mythe that they dont thrive in humidity is a lie and not true. I found them both in my ikea cabinet that stays in the high 80s and my terrarium thats at 90.

I use the Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew spray (not the concentrate) and it's been the only thing that has not only killed thrips and spidermites, but also kept them away. I soak the plant, let is sit for ~5 minutes then use a microfibre cloth to wipe down the entire plant. Rinse the plant then soak again and spray the soil before letting it sit for 10 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly. It may be a pain to treat a ton like this but it works like a charm! I was able to save my monsteras and croton a couple months ago in one treatment and it was the most relieving feeling ever.

Hey girl, don’t feel ashamed for having pests it literally happens to all of us! I’ve had both the black and clear thrips and although extremely annoying I find them to be kinda selective and “picky” and stick to only a few plants rather than spreading far and wide. Good luck!!

Saw trips(didn't know at The time about trips) knew it was bad but just washed her of and but her back.... Well 😑 a few days later... Kaos! So now, weekly checks and monthly sprays! Yes, I'd get Bonide plant systemic granules and treat all. The plants you saw thrips you treated, so keep treating with dishsoap, neem, alcohol spray, let sit 15 min. Then rinse off vigorously.

I found this video because I found thrips on my philodendron hope 😭 very small case but still makes me VERY upset, so I feel you on that! How is it going with your battle? All better since this video was a month ago?!

I make a spray with the captain Jack's, dish soap, and alcohol. I've only seen spider mites but I spray them regularly just as prevention.

I LITERALLY just found thrips on my hoya retusa while I had this video on😐NO JOKE😭 I've only had it for about 2 months, and it had mealy bugs when I first got it, I got rid of those, but it hadn't bounced back and a lot of the leaves were just looking a bit yellowed..so I decided to check it more thoroughly once I started watching what you were dealing with..and well...FREAKING THRIPS! It's now in the tub😐 and so it goes.

Spray all of them with alcohol/dish soap mixture, brush all the leaves with an old paint brush or makeup brush, then rinse off 10 min later. Let dry and spray with Captain Jacks dead bug brew or insecticidal soap.

I hope your plants survive! I had thrips a while ago and treated it with Captain Jack's. All my plants survived and are thriving now. I had a watermelon peperomia and peperomia pink lady that were infested too. Luckily I didn't need to repot them because their root systems are so delicate.

I use neem oil on all my plants when watering and it seems too mostly prevent bugs, also I learned just recently that you are not supposed to re-pot plants with an infection because it puts them in shock...not sure how true that is but someone recently told me that and now I put neem oil in my watering tin and water/treat for any bugs that way.

Also I saw noone talk about it - with my current thrips problem all i saw were white long tiny "worms" so small i can't explain how small... anywho i only found a few adult thrips black ones once i treated my plants and they died. anywho 38 plants 8 sprayed with insecticide, 4 replanted, 38 sprayed and watered with neem oil and the fight has just begun :(((

Poor thing, I've never had thrips but I've had spider mites a few times. The only thing that has helped me is to regularly shower the leaves. I do this every other week and checking the plant while spraying it down.

Man, I had the same little black dots, I thought it was soil on the leaves from touching them after sticking my fingers in the soil, but now my orchid has limpy leaves, my monstera too I had just repotted it but I guess another plant infected them or maybe when I repotted it outside thrips attacked it. I only saw the long shaped black fly like bug crawling recently and figured it was what was harming my plant. I've only been a plant parent for a year, so I knew of fungus gnats but not of thrips. Really sucks. And in Belgium I can't easily find neem oil. I hope hydrogen peroxide might do the trick

I think it’s one of the reason why I don’t want to collect a lot of plants is bec I think if I ever get an infestation I might just burn everything. I’m max at 20 plants and can monitor them everyday.

Take your hose and put each plant in a plastic bag, don't cover the plant. Hose each off on force mode. This won't kill the ones in soil. I have tried everything. Neem mixed with a soap and spray the soil and plant. That's as far as I get 😢

I swear everybody is getting thrips this year. I get them once a year in the fall. They are a pain, but manageable. Insecticidal soap along with wiping all leaves and stems works great but make sure you spot treat (just spray a paper towel with insecticidal soap and use it to removed strays) everyday when you see new larvae pop up. Cut off the worst infected leaves. Spray and wipe down completely every 3-7 days. Ive never had thrips on the same plant twice.

18:05 where the plant has "no sign of pests" i think the white stuff is the larva and baby thrips that's what i mostly had on my plants and thought it was nothing :( My friend has been battling with thrips for 1 year now so good luck :(

I feel for you. I have a large collection of plants that cannot be isolated and this winter I had scale and spider mites. I would not repot. I would treat with a systemic imidacloprid soil drench or granule or permethrin long acting foliar spray.

OMG same thing happened to my peperomia caperata. I went to check the roots cause it was very droopy and sad looking and it had NONE left ??? It's propagating now. Praying 4 our peperomias

Hi don’t be discouraged! Thrips can be defeated! Dunk all your plants in soapy water, change all soils and spray down all pots. Those black ones are adults, they can fly and lay eggs in soil. As you awared by now they will multiply fast bc of their life cycles. Separated are affected plants. Another solution is order yourself a box of live lady pugs, they will you eat the babies. They love anything that’s pink and white and yellow color foliage.

Since i had an infestation that killed 2 of my plants, i just treat all my plant periodicly. Like once every 3-4 month, and not all my plant are on the same cycle, and since then, I've had nothing! I also alwayyss treat new plants, even when it is straight from the nursery.

Im p-oed ex mother in law sent a houseplant home with my daughter I said no not pet friendly so she picked it up in a few days but by them my other plants now hove thrips and they're just ravaging some of my other plants. Hoping you have the solution because I'm in the middle of battle and they just keep reappearing even after spraying miticide etc.

I literally found thrips on my plants today, they are small, thin and seem to be black too. I’m gutted. I’ve got over 100 plants and just don’t know what to do. I’ve found them on three different plants in three different rooms in my house. I treated them with a neem oil, washing up liquid and water solution. I’m not sure how often I need to spray them 🪴🥺

I am in the same predicament . Are these Thrips? I can't really see the bugs. Oh know, the leaves are changing quickly. One day the plants looked normal, the next day I see signs on the leaves that I have ever seen before. This is so driving me nuts😳

My P. caperata also had thrips and they look reddish-black because of the pigment of the plant.

Miss Thang, I watched your video and I am amazed and horrified that you have all that pesticides and plant cleaning and spraying so close to your toothbrush at that sink.. I think your health is more important than those plants.

Last year I had Spider mites and they killed my Alocacia Polly so after that what I do is clean clean arround them and add a spoon of "neem oil" to all my mist water, that way any crazy bug will go away...🙏🏼🙏🏼

I am so sorry to hear about your plants. You might want to give your plants a soil drench in addition to spraying the leaves. I use neem oil ( cold press with azadirachtin) rosemary oil, and peppermint soap as a preventative measure about once a month. I've read that drenching the soil is effective because the plant absorbs the mixture and when the pest chew on the leaves, they are exposed to the mixture and eventually die. I hope that you can eradicate this problem.

Those are adult thrips so I would treat all of your plants in that room. I am so sorry. Thrips is the main bug I deal with at my house. I use a mix of water, alcohol and a squirt of dawn in a spray bottle (I think I learned this from Nikki from plants, pots and whatnots or Rachel from heart shaped leaves). I like captain jacks as well. My biggest concern with using a systemic is that I've read over and over that thrips can become immune to it and I do occasionally use beneficial bugs and put some of my plants outside- I don't want to kill the good/beneficial bugs. I would try to keep systemic as a big guns last priority if possible, but honestly, do what helps keep you sane.

We all have thrips one day or another so don't feel guilty 😉 I have thrips too. When they're grown UP, they look like sciarides which can't fly. Good luck ! You can use nématodes or lacewings PS : are lacewings"chrysopes" in french ? Because I'm french 😉

I have never had bugs on ANY of my plants and rn I am dealing with a huge infestation of thrips on my two biggest plants, elephant ear and likity split. It's so annoying

I know the stress that comes with unwanted pests! I picked up lice in college and it was such a nightmare to deal with, it traumatized me for years. How about beneficial pests? I heard lacewings are kind of indoor friendly.

I wouldn't throw them away. I would treat them every week and isolate them from the other plants. But oh well.
