We have wireguard on OPNsense running in prod, it has been running perfectly fine and rock solid for about a year now. Also, the CPU impact isn‘t even noticeable on our systems, so unless your firewall is slow or you need to route multigigabit VPN traffic, you‘re fine on the performance end.

Long story short: I had many use cases of IPFire and pfSense. Migrated the last one to OPNsense, for the most of my use cases, because of the large nasty Netgate campaign against OPNsense, and can't look back even only for that reason. Now, when i can use Sensei for free on top of OPNsense, for a use case, there is no substitute NGFW in the known universe, that can compete. Even many highly overpriced solutions like Sophos and similar thin can boxes for about 500-5000USD and subscribtion on top of that. That's in general use cases :) The WireGuard rant is just an dropplet in the ocean...

VyOS is my jam. Everything you'd ever need. Even an open source DMVPN. EdgeRouter devices are just a fork of Vyatta Core 6.3 now called EdgeOS. Similar to what VyOS did, forking the code when Vyatta was acquired by Brocade and shut down the open source offerings.

Truth is Tom is a great guy and I'm sure we all learned a lot from his videos. I sure did and words are not enough to express my gratitude. Regarding pfSense, although it's a great product, I think this wireguard problem shows that pfSense is not as rock solid as we all thought and somehow many of the users will jump to OPNSense. I wonder if there are any other problems in pfSense that were not yet discovered.

As Tom said, nothing is rock solid. I only recently started using pfSense. I migrated from FreshTomato on an R7000 mostly because I was tired of have to manually apply all my settings after every upgrade. I got a Protectli system to run pfSense on as I wanted more power. With the recent update, I did not upgrade as soon as it was available. There are several things that Netgate could have done better, but the one I hit was a non-event to recover from. The other item related to IPv6 has a fairly easy workaround. The one item I thought would be problematic for me was fixed with a package update. Once that fix was in place, I upgraded my system. This was fairly easy and has been as good as before, and the IPv6 support has been more stable than it was before the upgrade. That item with the workaround is known and should be fixed soon. (I haven't read the patch notes on 2.5.1 to see if it is in there.) I looked at OPNsense, but I had difficulty finding the specific information I needed. At this point, I intend to stay on pfSense until they no longer meet my needs. OpenVPN will work for me quite nicely, so Wireguard as a additional option is not critical.

Good video. Nothing wrong with links as long as you are transparent about the situation. Knew about Netgate's behavior regarding the Opensense domain and past interactions, chalked it up to the...normal...behavior of many in the deep tech world i.e. zero understanding of how you should interact with other humans....you know what I mean...and filed it away. In the meantime I have had clients purchased Netgate hardware, support, etc... Fast forward to now and the closing off of pfsense (I am fine with paying money for a product, but still want that product to be open) and now learning who Netgate hired to do the code for WG, I am at a point of now having zero confidence in Netgate's decision making process. Yes, they pulled the code, but they should never have been in that position in the first place. One look at who they hired, and I mean...holy #$@#$!. Really? Sigh. Hello rock. Hello hard place. How've you been?

For filtering you may want to look at E2Guardian on pfsense, yes a third party so can be difficult during upgrades, but it may fill a spot where Untangle doesn't fit. I know you often suggest pfblocker for simple filtering, but E2guardian goes a bit deeper in some modes of operation.

I've only seen a few vids by LS, and even for the stuff he really likes (you can tell), he is still transparent about why (gets the job done, he uses it for clients, etc). Better than some that would just do a 'review' and either praise or condemn as their experience after a day or two yielded. Not sure where these 'private links' comments are coming from (lack of oxygen?), but it seemed like a generic troll example to my eyes. Don't trust a single source for information, if you find contrasting info, keep digging until you are satisfied you have what you need to make an informed decision. Also read/watch information that is not aligned with your current bias and weigh if that information reconciles with your current understanding.

Tom, I'm confused by your statement that you don't have a use case for OPNSense. I thought it was forked from pfSense, and so I inferred that it was nearly identical. Why wouldn't you have a use case for it? What is it about OPNSense that makes it less useful?

I don't have a compelling reason to use a fork of pfsense and learn a different interface.
@JoeDuarteScientist
@JoeDuarteScientist 3 жыл бұрын
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Oh it has a different interface? I didn't think of that. I just started reading about it here: teklager.se/en/pfsense-vs-opnsense/ It's strange that the reviewer found that the OPNSense web interface still runs as root, given that the project cited pfSense's interface running on root as one of the reasons for forking. I don't like that both of them are running complex PHP applications to implement their interfaces, which probably means a full, live PHP interpreter. It's just a website, a relatively simple website with basic interactivity, check boxes, fields, etc. It should be static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, tightly optimized. The writing of config changes to pfSense proper can be done by the JS, or the web server itself. There's no need for a huge PHP stack just for writing config. I wish someone would come out with a massively smaller version of FreeBSD or OpenBSD, a lot like Alpine Linux. It would be great for embedded applications like the *Sense firewalls. My Alpine installs are less than 100 MB, less than ⅒ the size of a full Linux distro. I don't understand how they do it, but if Linux can be shrunk that much, a BSD should have similar potential. OPNSense is using HardenedBSD, but I think it's no smaller than FreeBSD. Anyway, you're finding lots of reasons to not try anything new. The trivial emailed key friction with Sophos was enough to make you not try it, and the prospect of having to learn an interface that is likely extremely similar to one you already know is the reason to reject OPNSense? That's surprising - I thought you would be super curious about these solutions. Nothing lasts forever, not even pfSense, so I don't get the resistance to learning. For a deeper, oblique example, the whole concept of a "root" "user" is ridiculous, as is the whole Unix user model, so the issue with the interface running as root would be moot with a better OS. We're starting to see people rethink this junky OS paradigm and start from a clean sheet: seL4 looks good, and Google's Fuchsia OS is not any kind of Linux or Unix, and is purely capabilities-based. We're a ways out from firewall appliances implemented on these next-gen platforms, though seL4 could be adapted right now. I wonder if anyone has tried it.

My problem with this assessment it's that it tries do put all products in the same box and they are not created equal. Some are based in FreeBSD and some are based in Linux and their network stack is very different. And with that comes different use cases. I think that the sense firewalls have use cases in business environments but in home use cases where you want the maximum speed with lower latencies people should at alternatives. Also, the sense firewalls only work in maximum performance with some network cards (mostly intel nics) and not everyone has one of those lying around. Since most people that watch this channel have different use cases they should be made aware of those. Finally some notable firewalls where left out like OpenWRT and IPFire.

Sad to see that guy go off on a tangent regarding possible monetization links. You always clearly state when you get a kickback from something and when you don't, you also state that the product can be bought directly whenever that's possible. Quite honestly, I'd watch your clips for hours on end if you put in ads every other minute because the content is that good (please hold the ad idea if you can, though LOL). As for Wireguard, stuff happens and being the new kid on the block, this is precisely why I give things time before using them in production instead of basing my entire stack on it. I mean heck, I don't file for a divorce every time a new blonde moves in down the road, either. Smh.

If I read this correctly Wireguard will have an in kernel implementation with FreeBSD 13. How slow netgate moves with pfsense ce who knows when they will get up to FreeBSD 13. pfsense 2.5 just upgraded to FreeBSD 12.
@blackrockcity
@blackrockcity 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, the inventor of wireguard thought the Netgate implementation was badly flawed. He rushed to make his own FreeBSD implementation but it didn’t get the rubber stamp to be included into FreeBSD 13.0. So now the world has to wait almost a year for FreeBSD 13.1 for a wireguard kernel implementation in FreeBSD. Now Netgate is faced with the issue of either repairing their software (which would be great!) or holding off and using the official implementation next year. Hopefully Netgate chooses to fix their wireguard. Jason, the inventor was able to whip out a new implementation in two weeks, Netgate should redouble their efforts to do it in a reasonable period (past performance aside).
