Romulan Warbirds have marched beneath the Raptor's wing for centuries, but few classes ever accomplished more on the battlefield, or through their sheer presence alone, than the D'Deridex.
Over the next few months the Templin Institute will be commissioning their own Romulan Warbird from jjmodelmaking! Check out the progress on our Social media, or JJ himself at the links below.

@@Dan-uf2vh Sure, but Trek isn't hard sci-fi. It's not soft sci-fi either, but there are plenty of things in Trek that are so beyond the capabilities of today that they are effectively space magic. Secondly electromagnetic shear forces that would also marginally affect you at your current point in space while close to them would cause a sound to emerge - you know - within your suit. "...to be unknown is to be unconquerable" It's extremely significant that neither Starfleet nor the Klingons (much less any other power in the Milky Way) have any idea how many Warbirds the Romulans have. They have an enormous Empire and can't get along with less than say one to each ten subject worlds to keep them subject to their Empire. The fleets we saw in the Dominion War must be a small fraction of the power they could bring to bear at any one place ff they truly felt the need.

This was easily the most interesting design in Star Trek outside of the Federation ships that appeared more than once. As for newer designs, yeah, the way I see it the Romulans are even worse off than the Cardassians now and are still struggling with resource and manpower shortages. That, and we've seen that smaller ships are the way to go in the Dominion conflict. Big Ships should only be used occasionally and are just big targets :cough: Odyssey :cough:

Actually, the D'Deridex has no impulse engines. According to the designer, they were simply forgotten the show. My gues was always, that the singularity they use for power also provides a different kind of sub-light propulsion, which does not need any emission mechanism. Some kind of gravitation devise.
@VallornDeathblade
@VallornDeathblade 2 жыл бұрын
If we extrapolate from other scifi that uses gravity drives such as Babylon 5. They generate a small gravitational field off the bow of the vessel, so instead of pushing the ship forwards with engines, the ship simply 'falls' forwards for as long as the drive is active. Which would be a very Romulan way to propel a ship invisibly and without showing off any impulse signature.

Certainly one of the most iconic and aesthetically interesting starship designs of Star Trek. But also a bit impractical, seeing how it encloses so much needlessly empty space with so much material, making it bigger and heavier than it needs to be, thus slower to maneuver and overall easier to hit. And making it needlessly difficult to move within to the different parts of the ship, while minimizing its usable interior space. But also most certainly visually impressive and intimidating.
