This is the most comprehensive YT video explanation of Tesla's FSD (as yet, Beta) that I have come across. I did have a pretty good understanding of FSD, and its superiority over other systems, but you have lifted the remaining part of the lid on what I needed. Excellent video.

If I could afford to do anything other than walk everywhere, I'd get an FSD Tesla! I finally got to have a ride in one about two weeks ago (it was an UBER). I was so excited and given my interest, the owner was more than happy to show me a thing of two! I really hope I get to do it again someday. I would love to ask them to drive like an insane person and really get a feel for the power and handling. Anyway, another great video. Many people seem to object to the name "autopilot" because the system is not fully autonomous. The term "autopilot" originated in the aviation sector. In my thirty-five year career as an airline pilot, I never once heard a suggestion that "autopilot" meant it did not have to be monitored or that it would somehow prevent anything from going wrong. It did just what the Tesla autopilot does - that is reduce the workload of the operator who, like in the airplane, takes full responsibility for the outcome.

For those of us who are getting older and becoming a more dangerous driver, FSD is a godsend.

I was blown away when a friend took me for a drive in his model 3 and sat facing me, talking to me the whole time as the car drove itself for 20 miles on a windy Seattle area two lane road. I kept expecting him to grab the wheel but he never had to until we reached a round-about where he had to do some steering to merge with traffic. And this was in 2018. Wow!

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, "There were 35,766 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2020 in which 38,824 deaths occurred." This is, according to NHTSA, 1.27 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. If Tesla can prove through data that FSD can drastically reduce the total number of fatal crashes per year or the number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, FSD will not only be approved by regulators in the future; it will be required for all cars. In other words, the technology doesn't need to be perfect to gain wide acceptance by regulators. It simply needs to be at least an order of magnitude safer than the best human driver.

I think that's a fair summary of what we have now. It's not 100% reliable - but it's easy to catch it's little oopsies. You just can't zone out and play with your phone **YET**. But it's getting appreciably better with each release. My biggest problem with FSD isn't the AI and all of that - it's that it's reliant on Google Maps which has significant errors in some parts of the world. Near me, there is a traffic light junction which Google refuses to believe exists. So FSD takes a complicated back-roads route to get you anywhere close to that junction instead of just going the quick way. Although that's not Tesla's fault - it does make FSD a pain to deal with sometimes.

Awesome video, finally a clear explanation for people to see, only thing is a small error in the hardware side, since only the S and X have the GPU´s installed, the driving happens in the FSD computer which yes all tesla´s have.

I’ve had my Tesla for 6 months and love it, although I don’t have fsd, just the basic autopilot. As an airline pilot by trade I fully recognize the opportunities automation offer and also the challenges of the road forward. When Airbus first certified their a320 series aircraft, the most common two phrases where “what’s it doing now” and “look, it did it again”. That being said, automation has led to a more safe aviation experience and ultimately it will lead to safer roads. It’s just the process of getting there that will be incredibly challenging.

For people like my son who's a quadriplegic and needs modifications to his vehicle to operate this would be amazing.

Well, I bought my Model Y 6 months ago here in Europe and I added FSD, because it is "dirt cheap" (about 4'000 USD) compared to 15'000USD in the US today. Maybe I can only use FSD in five (or ten) years, but by then it will be much more expensive. So I just wait and enjoy some tea. 😌

Sounds and looks like a sure thing. Driving will be doing the driving for us. At the moment I enjoy driving with a passion and do not need any help. However, if I can leave it all to AI and hugely intelligent automotive advances as mentioned here while I am tired but still need to get to my destination without fail or accident, or the weather suddenly makes driving dangerous, fsd is absolutely magical, probably life-saving and very very welcome, Hooray Elon!

I use FSD daily. The only thing it fails on for me is merging when a lane ends. So if you are road with 2 lanes going north and you are in the right lane. Then if the right lane ends FSD never acknowledges that is happening or that it happened. FSD just eventually recognizes that there are 2 cars in one lane and does a bunch of weird things, like cutting someone off, to deal with the situation. On my normal drives that is one of the only thing it has problems with. I have driven for over an hour before without any issues except for the issue above.

I have FSD and use it every time I get in the car. When I first started using it I thought I must be lazy, but now I realize the mental load it takes off of my brain during my daily commute it is worth the money. It has improved a lot recently and I get excited for every firmware release. I can't wait for the merging of hwy and city FSD in V11 as the hwy FSD is not nearly as advanced as city street FSD. It is fun to track the improvements and experience them as the firmware improves and compare my experience with some of the youtubers who are also using FSD Beta.

FSD is more than a name, it’s a goal. From the data, it’s fairly successful and has been getting progressively better every year. However, edge cases haven’t been solved and it still occasionally acts in a non human like way. Those will be solved and it’s not many years off.

I have had the oppurtunity to test a model 3 for a week with self driving capability. However it doesnt seem to work very well on our roads. I had to step in most of the times I activated it. The purpose is supposed to be giving me a more relaxed drive, but the reality is I am getting more stressed controlling the cars moves then when I drive myself.

Consider a world where Elon Musk never existed - Chatgpt, AI, self-landing rockets, full self-driving cars, and even colonizing Mars may have seemed like unattainable dreams. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone like Elon Musk pushing the boundaries of what's possible and inspiring us all to reach for the stars.

Based on my software career and my experience with my X, I'm guessing that FSD is maybe 10 years off and will be much less imperfect than human drivers. That said I'm all in but unfortunately I'll be too old to drive in 10 years. But wait......FSD will be my driver, I hope!. BTW your explanation of the process of building a model of the world in the computer is one o the best I've seen. But the explain of the operation of a neural net, while typical, really doesn't explain much. I'm as comfortable with the idea of a neural network (which I believe is the right direction for general computing), as I am with how linked blocks of digital meory and mining have anything to do with ghost-like things like digital currency. .

FSD in Western Europe isn't widely available on all roads and in all types of areas. Basically, it is only sometimes available when I am driving on the highway for around 3-5 KM's, but very rarely in inner cities. When on the highway and engaged, every minute or so, it warns that I must apply pressure to the steering wheel lest it will shut itself off. If I don't squeeze the steering wheel stupidly tight, several times where the sensors are located or quickly agitate the steering wheel by making some small steering moves from left to right, it will also shut itself off. The feedback I have to give to the car to let it know that I am paying attention is too radical in my opinion, sometimes I wonder if the steering wheel sensors in my Model 3 are faulty. I rarely ever use FSD for more than 2 minutes at a time because of these reasons. A waste of 7.5K euro if you ask me. The feature that warns you when you should be braking because of some event that is taking place in front of you, I do think works well and has increased my safety.

This video should be updated to explain how the newest version works, where it just inputs all the camera feeds directly into a neural network which then outputs to the controls without having to generate an internal 3d model.

We've owned a Tesla X for over 6 years now... no issues at all... not a single one so far... not mechanical, not electronic, and not with the autopilot. However, we knew in advance that the autopilot was still in its infancy, and was not to be fully trusted, but more like a small child, that can do certain things well, but otherwise still needs supervision. Whether the final product is 6 years away, or 16 years away, the goal of autonomous vehicles has always been the same, to reduce auto accidents (and fatalities) by over 99%, allowing people to focus on more productive or enjoyable things, without all the stress, anxiety, road-rage, DUI's, and other issues that human drivers create. And just as the aviation industry improved with their autopilot, eventually the automobile industry will as well.

The problem I see right now, is that driver complacency sets in while FSD or Autopilot is engaged. So if the car misidentifies the proper path (because of missing or contradictory road markings, for instance), I think the driver may be too flustered to grab control when it's necessary. I think many drivers are not prepared, nor capable of handling that properly.

This video is a good synopsis of V11 FSD; which we don't have in public BETA yet. Though Elon has said this week it'll go to the Tesla team at least. But using AI for control hasn't been done so far in V10 and below.

I am skeptical of FSDs response to unique driving scenarios that may cause the system to overcorrect/overreact: heavysnow, ice, heavy rain, oil slicks, unforeseen mechanical failures, deflated tires, roads that don't exist in reality, roads that dead end in reality and there's no place to turn around, large puddles that blend in with the road (undected by the camera), geo electric storms that cause the cars to shutdown in the middle of a highway or intersection.

I thought that Tesla's Autopilot also used a road map, with traffic light, stop sign positions, intersection lane layout and speed limits. Did they really ditch that too? 360⁰ lidar costs an arm and a leg, and fairly delicate, but downloading and refreshing the map costs nothing in comparison. They can outsource it. Google map has all that.

3:07 Actually, the idea we use only vision for driving is complete nonsense. We also use our hearing (to listen for horns, emergency vehicles, etc). We also can feel if the car's grip is slipping, if we are driving over rumble strips, if we are are trying to turn too tightly at speed, etc.

I have been using it for 3 years. It has yet to bring me home by itself. On the turn about half a mile from jome, I can clearly hear the navigation system said "make a right turn now" the car would go straight; every time. Very consistent.

They need powerful processors to digitize and process the vector data, they should work with Apple and use ‘M chip’

So, the FSD computer prolly isn't a Raspberry Pi under the cover :) Does the $15,000 FSD feature go with the owner or does it stay with the serial number of the car? Can you add the feature to a car someone may have had for years, or can it only be added with the original car purchase? And....if I'm noodling around town and the cameras are sending all this data to my FSD, does it keep that data around in case I take the same route tomorrow? Can or does it upload any of that captured information back to Tesla to be used for training the AI back 'home' at the datacenter?

We purchased FSD for our first Tesla. Our adult children have also purchased Tesla’s for there families. At this point in development we have recommended to our family, not to purchase the FSD. $15,000 is just not worth the cost for the limited capacity it offers at this time. In years to come, if or when, FSD really is FSD then they can rent or purchase it.

I look forward to the day when I can have a Cybertruck follow me and my paragliding buddies on a cross country flight and pick us up! Also I really want to have to worry about having to drive back home, since a lot of those trips end up with me back at home around 1:00 a.m. .

What I wonder about, how does the cameras work so well, when there are rain drops or snow partially obscuring its vision. My back up camera is under a lip to partially cover it one supposes, and it becomes almost useless after several minutes of driving in the rain. That is a common theme where we live, T Space! 😂

The challenging part getting to full autonomy is going to be the period of time in between where the driver is still responsible is the FSD fails. Who’s going to be at fault in the future?

Well you really showed a good example of craziness and possibilities of a real brain. Funny how 15k may not be safe today..😫 but maybe tomorrow. I'm already realizing the positive side, but complacency can be the human brain malfunction because just the basic adas system I didn't realize my brain would think it was off when it chimed but I honestly was distracted and hit the guardrail. I realized thinking it continued to stay on but I overrode the controls for a split second. I was just beginning to get used to the simple system. Now this is my brain and realized at the time if I would have realized not overriding the adas system, I would have not kissed the guard rail. So does AI use complacency?😵‍💫

The Tesla computer compiles all the video from eight cameras with "zero latency." Ha!

My friends 6 year old child can't pronounce the letter R correctly that kid will never make it in the business world since they can't pronounce the letter R. This is the type of complaint I hear from people a lot with learning computer systems. "See it couldn't do that thing, it will never work" That being said. We got voice dictation to work in a quiet room 20 years ago. And it still doesn't work in a noisy environment.

FSD in say a new car. Owner pays for FSD expecting to realize using it. 4 to 8 years later owner buy new tesla and never got a working FSD upgrade. Does owner need to start over in new car by paying another full cost for FSD or will owner get to keep the credit for FSD of 1st car and get FSD in 2nd car. This would help an owner to invest in the future by not being penalized in delays or promises not met by tesla.

Full hands off self driving is not possible because the neural network has no inherent sense of time. Current neural network architectures are essentially large scale regression models or sequence representation models like with ChatGPT. This means that the network can never understand causality and make true time-based predictions. Elon Musk admitted recently that FSD won’t be possible without solving general AI and why he’s pushing for the Optimus program. There needs to be a fundamental breakthrough in AI for FSD to be fully realized.

The FSD and its _shadow_ are implemented in a pair of _FPGAs_ (Field Programable Gate Arrays,) which are running redundantly with the one in _shadow_ mode doing computation not related to driving but instead to monitoring the cabin and environment, taking care of various housekeeping tasks, preparing to take control instantly if the primary (or ego) is damaged in any way.

For those who dont need an car for daily commute, tesla taxi will be lifechanging. I dont care if the car drives me from a to b at 150 130 or 90 km/h as long as i can sit in the backseat and arrive relaxed.

I understand everybody could be scared of FSD because its new and possibly dangerous. But lets consider the roads today, I know many friends and family members who have lost family members because of accidents, drunk drivers, high drivers, or just bad injurys etc. Imagine the possibility of FSD to help change that future. Just consider the road safety today.

I absolutley do think it is worth it. When Tesla has the trucks for sale that is what I am waiting for. Full self driving ability feature I would only trust Tesla to have this feature. Other makes althought they have vehicles on the road, they are no where near as advanced as Tesla. Tesla is the future. And when I buy an electric vehicle, it will only be Tesla.

FSD is not worth it right now, but Tesla keeps upping the price, so it may be wise to purchase it before the price doubles again. I have mixed feelings about autopilots after having lived through the eco terrorists dropping the highway speeds to 55 way back when. EVERYBODY lost all of their high-speed intuitive reaction times during the lull. AFAIC, most drivers on the road today can't even STEER a car, let alone DRIVE one. The newspapers are all full of people driving into stores (oops, hit the wrong pedal!), rolling their cars at 25mph (a mean feat), or ramming cars on the freeway in front of them who have slowed for traffic. (despite the 400 glaring stop lights on cars in front of them).

Errm, FSD doesn't actually work (all the time).

Whether we think it's worthwhile, or not, is irrelevant. As Thanos claimed about himself...it is inevitable. And there will be many casualties along the path to full autonomous driving - most of which will be software that will be eliminated or, simply, rewritten, but a few human casualties, also, as there already have been - but AI will take control of most of our lives (including getting us from point A to point B in a timely and safe manner) leaving us to actually enjoy life. Someday, maybe a few dozen, or hundred, or maybe even a few thousand years, from now, we as humans will live to work, if we want, instead of working to live, as we must do, now. Risking my nerdness, here, the Star Trek ideology has it right...the betterment of ourselves, as both individuals and as a species, will be the driving force of Mankind, not monetary gain, as it necessarily is, now.

Computers are great at most things and getting better, but I’d never trust a car to drive me around. I can drive myself thanks and enjoy doing so. It was misleadingly sold as “safer than human drivers making human errors” but it is quite obvious it is naive and over optimistic to think there wont be many errors leading to crashes, life altering injuries and fatalities.

Unless Tesla greatly reduces the cost of FSD, I won't get it. I wonder what percentage of their customers are buying it now. Tesla is basically charging their customers for chauffer service without a guarantee that it will work. Just my humble opinion.
