My mom collected all kinds of things, dolls, plates, Hummels. She kept them around and enjoyed them. But, once she died, no one wanted them. It all went to the thrift store. Your mom should enjoy whatever makes her happy now and let the rest go. Nice job! Loved the commentary by Levi. 👏🏻

Hi Ann, Yes I agree that she needs to keep what makes her happy and that is why she says she will never want to be minimal which I completely understand. My mom and dad still have all the little collectibles that they like to look at in a big cabinet. =)

When I want to sell something online, I do it right then, with one thing at a time. This has helped me a lot, instead of having a pile of things to sell and go through. One thing at a time helps me with actually making progress, because I can do one thing in 5 minutes, which is manageable, but a pile of things to list online is hours of work, which I don't have as often, so the piles just sat. If you're struggling to actually post the items for sale, try doing it one thing at a time. Happy selling!!

I keep coming back to your videos. I love how you are doing this together. I read the comments and think it is important that your readers understand where your parents are coming from. We were taught to save and reuse or repurpose. It was wasteful not to. Then there are the memories that we have. It has been really hard these last few months learning to let go as we are moving. Some days I just want to sit and cry. You all need to give your parents time. I realize that my things are special to me and only me. So after I am gone my girls will just trash it all. The things I am keeping will hopefully end up in another home to enjoy just not my girls homes. They have taken much just not all and I understand that times have changed. Our collectibles are pretty much worthless as your Mom said in this video. Glad she can find an outlet. Thank you ladies for these videos. They are helping me to let go. We are down to the wire after 38 years in this home and 56 years of married life we are going to a brand new home in just a couple weeks. I cheated today. I loaded up all my closets and just moved them all to the new house and hung everything up in my new walk in closet to deal with another day. Baby steps I will do it just not yet. Glad you can do it together. Thanks again for the comment that sometimes you have to wait for another day.

Shannon - I know this video is several months old and while I watched it when you first posted it, I recently watched it again. Something you said in this video really helped me declutter things my grandchildren played with when they would visit/stay with me. I was worried they’d be upset if I got rid of certain things. But, that wasn’t the case. There were a few things they wanted for their memory boxes they have at their house. However, for the most part, I was the one who had the memory and struggled letting things go (similar to the baby doll your mom kept because she remembered you carrying it around). I’m not sure if you’ll even see this comment, but you and your mom have helped me so much. 😊

Shannon, I went through all my photos, decluttered doubles etc. and took them all out of the albums and put them in one box a little bigger than a shoe box with dividers. They are marked as children by name, extended family, our house, holidays, old photos etc. I keep it on the bench in the office and can grab it at any time to look at. No more storing albums that are all different and don't look the same, it's great! Best wishes to you and your mum from Jo in Australia xx

I love this. I did pretty much the same thing. Photos of my children were in albums that weighed a ton! I removed all photos (pitched the albums!), and put them in order by year and season. I wrapped up each years worth of photos in a piece of paper, and they fit nicely in a box smaller than a shoe box. Recently I allowed my kids to choose what photos they wanted, it was good to let them go.

My dad passed away nearly on year ago. My mom is still alive, and decluttering their home after 75 years of their marriage, very very difficult. And, we are moving at her pace. She attaches past value on everything. Consequently, I have boxes of collectibles in my basement, knowing it's best to remove from her house, but she insists they will sell for $$$. Probably, one day, I will simply donate. It's been very hard.

I sold 60 of the Danforth Mint collectible plates in 2012 at a church sale. they were worth less than $1 each. After my mom died these companies still keep sending me advertising. Sad thing, they had never been out of the boxes. I don't quilt because no one wants quilts that I know, and daughters in law want their mother's things, not too interested in mine. If your grandchildren or children didn't make memories with these belongings, they are meaningless just because they belonged to a relative your hardly knew. Sad but true. You both inspire me and many others I am sure.

@@elainecole6896 I would slowly toss/donate the things she won’t even realize are gone like the attic or basement to lower the financial burden of a dump truck sized garbage rental in the future. They cost a lot, I think a couple thousand, so I would start on any unknown clutter that may be hazardous now (things with batteries, clothes, newspapers/paper-they can attract pests). We rented one when we moved in to our “fixer upper” *note rundown house 13 years ago. All the old cabinets, tubs, and fixtures had to go somewhere.

OMG this is why I have so much stuff - I'm forever in limbo and put things back bc I'm overwhelmed! But watching this, I'm sighing, "Just pitch it - you aren't using it and you are keeping it prisoner in a dark space!" So now I am motivated to just pitch it all - even if it may fetch some cash on eBay, it's not worth my time and effort to keep it stored for an imaginary buyer!! - oh, and I love the cooing of the little one in the background, so sweet.

Funny thing was that the 1980s Japanese Sanrio toys they got their kids are actually worth 10x what they paid for them. "((Sigh)).....I'd rather you decide what you want to do with it..." Shannon...your sweet and polite way to opt out of inheriting doll figurines😅 I'll remember this the next time I find something that holds no value to our now 22 yr old daughter..... This "mom nostalgic keepsakes saga" is a real thing! Both my husband's parents and my sweet Mom have these mini newborn baby dolls that fit into your hand. Honestly, and not to be unkind, but they are a bit creepy to me. They cover the entire dresser top in the guest room at my in-laws house. Among too many other things to even count. It really was a popular thing to collect in the 90's too. So. MANY. Collections. And believe you me, they have no plans to get rid of them. There are many in my extended family who would faint in shock at the thought of letting collectibles or any handmade item go. I am more attached to cards or paper notes etc but not antiques i. e. Coin collections and the like...I just really, do not care about these things. I'm just so um... simply minimal. This is so important to face though, truly. Go you!! To both of you! 😉

We had so many collectibles. For every birthday I was given a glass figurine (bunnikins). One of my family members wanted them so I was happy to send them to someone who wants them.

@@shannontorrens1 my mom bought me Bunnykins when I was a baby. I’m sure I still have pieces boxed away. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to part with them.😩 My son is 26 so maybe one day I can pass them down to a grandchild.❤️🙏

Hi ladies, I know I shouldn't be thinking of this but I LOVE THAT BENCH !!! ( for hidden storage lol). That's how I get overwhelmed so easy because I try to work in an area then it turns into a never-ending rabbit hole. It's so mentally draining 😣
@shannontorrens1

Hi Lisa, it really can be draining when there is a lot to go through. This is why we are trying to chip away at it when there is time. It is incredible how much that storage area can hold, I know because when I lived in that room as a kid it was FULL.

I’ve knitted some baby blankets that end up being a rectangle but when knit you start at a corner and increase stitches so far and then decrease to the other corner. Not that your mom wants to finish it but that may be what it is LOL

I use to collect a few things but have gotten rid of all of them years ago. I always think....what a waste of money. Wish I would have been smart and saved my money. I actually parted with a few sentimental things this past year ..3 of my dolls I had and a few other things. I was really sentimental but it wasn't out of control....a couple of bins. I've gone through all of that many times...little things here or there. Most was paper.

Yes it was the era of collectibles. My parents started buying me those madam Alexander dolls from around the world in the 70s. They were supposed to be worth so much. I put them with a bunch of stuff for an auction. I had no desire to ever have those dolls. I had baby dolls that yes I was attached to. Those I kept. They were my babies when I was little. Those will be the things I have till I die

Collectibles only mean something to the person who collects them and company that made money off of us by convincing us we needed them. If you love it great go for it but just remember no one else will want these collections we have amassed. And they are never going to be worth more than you paid for them but always less. All of that clutter used to be cash.
