Scott and Jess, Been watching your show for ages and I’ve commented a few times, but have forgotten to mention that your style of delivery has given me the confidence to tackle jobs around the house. I appreciate that you are down to earth, self-deprecating and knowledgeable… but you also break down big jobs into sections which in turn, shows the average Joe how manageable things can be. Now I’m not replacing a beam or footing to my house but your videos did give me the confidence to build a beautiful deck off the side of our house this summer… in fact, as my friend came to help out French doors in… I constantly was laughing and quoting your “but can he hang a door” story. Impressive beam. Good work crew, all knew what to do & when to change position. Last time I saw one of those beams, Holmes on Homes was in San Fransisco doing a charity build, His nail guns were just bouncing off the beam, he had to drill & screw, couldn't even hammer nails in!

It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. From an historians point of view for a house with no architectural merit the amount of work that is going into it is mind blowing. It is very interesting to witness the NZ building code and how much stricter it is than here in Canada. I hope you enjoy it for a very long time.

Well, a lot of the work is because Scott obviously enjoys carpentry and because it's interesting to watch. For example, he could have saved money and energy with simple vinyl replacement windows but it's much more interesting to watch him rebuild the existing wood sashes with double glazed panels. Scott puts in the work, gets the views and in return gets free materials and tools and sponsorships. Not sure what you mean about the stricter NZ building code - NZ has a huge mold problem because of lax building codes over the years.

It's all in the planning that Scott does well, well generally! The old adage, measure twice, cut once. Well planned from start to finish the only thing I would have done is except I would have had a ladder ready to put under the beam for the second part of the lift, just in case, muscles faded. Great camera work by Jess too.

Bro the hikoki 1/2 inch impact wrench is super ideal for driving bugles into LVL I used to have one when I worked for carters doing remedial fix ups they are great when you have a ton of stud lok screws to put in the smaller impact drivers are great but I have burned them out before

I think it would be a good idea to strap the underside of the rafters across the cut to maintain a tension path (probably part of the reason they were lapped in the first place) and prevent roof spread. To deal with the offset you could sister on some timber to the rafters on one side of the cut so you can run the straps straight.

Hey Scott! Another extra to compensate for the compromised lateral load (exterior walls falling outwards), you spoke about with the little diagram, would be to put straps along the under side of the joist and up the side of the beam, before installing the joist hanger. As at the moment it’s just a few product nails into the beam that’s essentially holding the truss type system (triangle) together 🧐👌🏼 Rate the videos, I have learnt a lot and you’ve definitely helped me become more thorough!! Keep up the exciting videos

I suppose a few screws interspersed between the nails would help with that. The nails being less resistant than screws from being pulled out directly.

That Hitachi is more like the hanger guns that I'm used to, although I've only every used pneumatic ones with a hose. They are also smaller than the battery powered one you were using... handy as though! Way better than trying to swing a hanger between joists.

Laminating those beams is easier than in Australia, here we have to glue them together first with sika bond, then nail together, then screw together with batten screws. I did a beam similar to this a couple of months ago, it was a combined hanging and strutting beam, but it was three LVL beams. It was HARD work!

Hey there! Just something that came to my mind when watching this video. 11:20 this is the reason why we dont/rarely use impactdrivers in Germany in woodworking. Just not needed. Some carpenters use it on site for some heavy duty screws when they build barns or the roof structure with footlong screws, but in furniturebuilding or normal construction we always use normal drills like you do there. Using impactdrivers is a thing/phenomenon that came to Germany by watching youtube i think and is mostly used by hobbyists and not by craftsmen. Greetings Chris

I use the Bostitch PN50 palm nailer. It means dragging around an air hose and manually loading each nail, but it's super quick and can get into tight spaces where even a standard hammer can't go. After the first dozen or so nails, you get the hang of it and the magnetic head for holding the nail is nearly as quick as a full size nailer with a strip of nails.

We actually stopped using our impacts to put in Bugles. Drill works so nice. Normally on speed 1 or 2 on a dewalt drill. 👌

Great camera work Jess, thought you were going to do one of those comedy routines where dozens of people come down the attic stairs. Also made me think of that very English comedy skit The Plank from years ago.
