You know, for the life of me, I cannot understand why the critics hate the "Rattle & Hum" period of U2: to me, it is U2 at their rawest & most powerful period culminating in the outstanding "LoveTown" Tour, which to date is their best ever Concert Tour!!!

100% agree. This was U2 at their best. While I didn't give up on them after "Pop", I did begin to lose interest. They were definitely at their height of brilliance between '88 and '93. Glad that I got to see them live at the time.

Terry O'Dowd “Pop” was the first album I didn’t listen to all the way to completion since I discovered them during Achtung Baby. I thought it sounded like they were parodying themselves. I found some hidden gems on the album over time. All That You Can’t Leave Behind was proof that they were reborn (hard to believe that was 20 years ago) in my then-opinion. I think The Joshua Tree-Lovetown-Achtung Baby-ZooTV Tour-Zooropa is when they just couldn’t miss...even if they wanted to.

@@ThePogue95 Agree. Beginning with his falsetto on the studio version of "The Fly" and carrying it through to tracks like "Can't Help Falling in Love," "Numb" and "Lemon," then switching back and forth and belting it out so powerfully like he had always done previously, superb stuff. 1991 through '93, his voice was never better. At the end of "One," for example.

MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

He started to lose the limits of what’s possible with the open throat at this age. But if that hadn’t happened would he ever have pushed himself to the falsetto limits of Lemon or the Lows of Velvet Dress? Age and overuse forced or inspired experimentation and Bono pulled it off. Inspiring to see someone do that.

Same timeframe for me. I was 14 in '84 and eventually owned all their releases including a few live bootlegs (on vinyl!) by the time Live Aid happened in July of '85. I don't know if I have ever seen a musical act of any sort take over the public consciousness the way U2 did and have the public respond the way they did in 1987 with the release of The Joshua Tree and the subsequent world tour. That includes Prince and Springsteen a few years prior and the Seattle scene four years later.

Holy cow! Me too! I got into them around 1984 with Pride and kind of went a little off the deep end. Saw them first in 1986 on the Conspiracy of Hope tour in Chicago. 4 times the next year, also in Chicago, and then got deep into the bootleg scene, acquiring stuff I don´t know if many people have ever heard. December 2023 I saw them for my 20th time at the Sphere. Don´t know how many more I´m going to get, but I feel pretty good about what I´ve gotten.

I think you hit the nail on the head. R&H being a movie released by Paramount in theaters turned it into something much bigger that maybe got away from the band's original intention a bit. I always viewed this period as a supplement to The Joshua Tree while the naysayers almost completely misunderstood what the band was doing here, how they were capturing the tour on film and the new stuff on audio/in the studio.

I have been quite intrigued with the numerous comments my own two comments on U2 has generated! First if all, I joined U2's roller-coaster of rock in June, 1987; until that moment, I actually couldn't stand them! So what changed? When they released "With Or Without You" they caught my attention but it wasn't until "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" was released that I was really taken with the whole persona they conveyed from their music style & concept right down to how they dressed. The only period of them that I do not like is "Zooropa": just like the Beatles they had their weirdo phase BUT very quietly extricated themselves out of it! To summarise: none of us remain the same; it is humanly impossible for us to achieve this. U2 have managed to reinvent themselves numerous times in their 43 year history: a feat the current wannabes will never acheive! U2 have brought pure enjoyment to the music sector of life: they are greatest live act on earth! Only the Killers have stood out from the rest of the crowd: their cover of "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)" is spine tingling brilliance! But that's another line if inquiry....

In my opinion they didn't reached their height until the Zoo TV tour, but their best album is POP and almost 10 years later came out with How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb which was also amazing and could also be argued that it was the best. I guess its hard to say when they were at their best. Simply amazing band.

I have a stash of cash I would happily splash on a Deluxe Rattle & Hum boxset with demos, outtakes, live cuts, expanded remastered film on blu ray etc. Come on U2, arses in gear!
