Amazing that one of the most important pieces that keeps the engine alive (oil splasher) is made from plastic. They want it to fail.

Thouraghly enjoyed your video. I’m 72, when I was in my teens and twenties I was able to do most of the repairs and maintenance on my cars, as were lots of my friends at the time. Lack of money meant we had to, but we enjoyed it. Nowadays however, I open the bonnet, look in, top up the windscreen washer bottle, maybe check the oil level, the rest is just not worth trying to figure out what’s what. It’s really replace rather than repair these days. Sad I think.

I agree Gerry! I spent a lot of time working on old cars! Swapping engines, transmissions, and other random jobs! I once completely rebuilt a Holden 253 V8 engine and drove it for many years. Wish I still had it actually! They were great times! Thanks for watching 😊👍

Exactly like the crank on my son’s Victa 20” Concord with the V170 engine. It vibrated so bad that it cracked the base plate. I pulled the motor and rotated it and yep, it is about the same as that one. It doesn’t leak on the base seal and the engine ran ok apart from the vibration. Imagine it too has n hit something. The bad part is he was so proud of buying a brand new mower for his family for $700, and this is the build “quality” it has. Makes me mad as hell.

Yeah, it is very disappointing to see the quality once you get inside these things! Retail price doesn't always reflect in quality unfortunately. To stop crank bending issues, mowers should really use a disc with swing blades. Thanks for watching 👍

I enjoyed the sluthing on this one. Lots of red herrings thrown out there. Was it the hard hit on the blade? Almost got us believing Incorrect maintenance by owner 🤪 But no, the final shocking result. 😕 Factory mistake!! 🙀 I honestly didn't see that coming. Thanks for the lazy afternoon mystery.

Thanks for sharing. In my opinion, the reason for the silicone gasket probably compensates for the uneven gasket mating surface from poor casting, and or poor surface machining.

the old ones might use more fuel and be less clean running, but the manufacturing process of all these cheap junk ones are surely putting out more emissions than running the older stuff (same can be said for many things i bet)
@TheUltimateRecycler

Yeah, I agree Dean. They probably pass emissions tests when brand new but would quickly fail in normal use (ie with people who don't look after their equipment!).

I purchased a rover from hardware shop called Masters before they closed down, it was made in hungry. I still got it, but got new one for Xmas. My rover had cutting bar like that. I hit something and broke the boss. I went to local mower repair shop and he did not believe me it was a rover. Anyway I got it repair for free under warranty. The guy was saying it's not umwarranty claim because I hit something but then he asked where I bought it from and I said Masters and he said they don't ask questions and he put it through as a warranty claim. (I wonder if that was one of the reason they went bust). I never was happy with this rover. As I was using a mower my father purchase second hand back in the late 70s. That was rover. Cheers Graham.

The old Rover mowers were great Graham - very well built! I guess they sold out like many companies did, and put their name on cheap junk!

My dad bought a 2nd hand mower in the 80s, and had it serviced professionally once in 2001. He takes cares of it and it’s still mowing his lawn regularly in 2023. Certainly don’t make them like they used too. I bought a mower when I moved out of home in 2019 and have already had to replace it 😢

I’m the mower man at the local Bunnings where these 21” Chinese Victas are sold. I’ve had a few returned, all with symptoms of a bent crank. One had vibrated so much is cracked the deck between the engine mount holes. And one also had a split fuel hose.

I'm guessing you don't offer any sort of returns for bent cranks and other user-caused damage - which is understandable. The trouble with the poor build issue on this mower is that the average owner would never know there was a problem other than the mower slowly getting harder to start and maybe burning excess oil and/or lacking power - until it was way outside the warranty period. Even then, I'm sure they would just put it down to disappointing performance of a Chinese engine. Even if the problem was discovered by a dealer within the warranty period, I'm fairly sure they wouldn't even bother going down the warranty path and just sell the customer a new mower. Thanks for watching and commenting mate 👍😊

Exactly what’s wrong with my son’s V170 Victoria engine on a 20” Concord. It vibrated so bad it cracked the base near one mounting point. Yep, the crank is at least three or four mm out of whack.

Well, that was interesting. I can't believe it didn't have a proper gasket. I had no idea they would do something like that. Disappointing to say the least. It's hard to find quality these days. A shame you couldn't fix it, but you sure gave it a darned good try!

They periodically go through every part to see if they can shave pennies off the manufacturing cost. If it lasts as long as the warranty, that's their goal and no more. It can be somewhat depressing to see the lack of quality in consumer products today.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 8 ай бұрын
Yep, indeed that would be the plan! Why have some parts capable of lasting years longer than others! It's probably an engineering challenge toning down the quality of everything to match the weakest part!

Well, I suppose if you had access to machine shop equipment, a steel sleeve and matching piston, you could cut down the bore, press in the sleeve, reassemble the engine with the new piston, crank, and probably a new sump … and you would have a better quality engine than when it left the factory in China! Of course, you’d spend far more money repairing this engine than it would ever be worth!
