Lifelines are a great way to 'save' your work if you have to rip back for any reason. You can place lifelines into the stitches while they are on your working needle, or below the needle in the fabric of your project. This video demonstrates both.
Check out Tangles'N'Knots offerings for the nylon cord I'm using in the video, here: www.tanglesnknots.com/collect...
At the 3:20 mark, my microphone stopped working - I apologize! You may need to increase the volume on your device at that point.
To cast on a swatch as I'm showing to test each method:
Using worsted weight yarn and US 8 / 5 mm needles (we're working flat so you can use straights, circular or DPNs) cast on 30 stitches.
Knit 6 rows in garter (knit on RS and WS) - this prevents the bottom from rolling up but won't actively play a roll in the swatch.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): K15, p12, k3.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until your swatch reaches the desired length.
Try placing the lifeline through the stitches on the needle and in the work below the needle as the video demonstrates! Then try knitting past the lifeline on your working needle and/or ripping back to one of your lifelines. Easy peasy, right!

It's my pleasure, Barb! I hope it helps! I didn't know that T'n'K closed in April. Thanks for letting me know. Here's an equivalent product: BeadSmith Chinese Knotting Cord Thread 0.8mm 15 Meter Neon Fuchsia Color for Art Jewelry Beading Kumihimo Craft Sewing a.co/d/1bZ2WMy. Coincidentally it's the same pink, but it's the same size in diameter.

Great advise, thank you. For some reason I’m feeling very lost whilst learning to knit using circular needles. In the days when I made my own garments, we rarely used patterns and I don’t remember there being so much to know. Perhaps ignorance was bliss and gave us a can-do attitude. Now all I hear is people don’t like knitting Purlstitch (we had no choice with straight needles): or they have got stuck or getting stuck on sock or sleeve island……. That’s a thing??🤷‍♀️. So I’m trying to find inspiration. Nobody I know knits or crochets and I don’t do social media (except YT) so am happy to find your channel. Thank you 🐨🦘👋🏻

Hi Lesley - thanks so much for watching and welcome to the channel! I love your insight about how knitting has changed so much. When I first learned how to knit, it was all DPNs and straight needles, too. Now I rarely use either! I'll have to do an episode of Knit Talk that covers knitting in the round vs. flat. I think that would be a fun 'conversation' for us to all have. And I do absolutely get stuck on 'Sleeve Island' 😆Thanks for the giggle! I hope you'll find lots of inspiration here and let me know if you have any things you'd like to see discussed!

@@TheUnapologeticKnitter thank you. Yes please, that would be fun. If you have any Tips 🤔 from the beginning for knitters using circulars and the effect on an increase/decrease stitch I’ll soak it all up like a sponge 🤭😅😅

Thanks! I’ve learned that if you knit directly from the smaller needle instead off transferring to the working needle, it can leave a weird line.

Hey Susanne! Thanks for watching. That's great feedback. While I haven't experienced that, as it's the needle we knit onto that "should" set the stitch size, it's probably a great practice that if you pick up the stitches with a smaller needle, go transfer them to a gauge-size needle before you continue knitting. I love that!

Is there any difference if I'm knitting in the round?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 7 ай бұрын
@@angieg7257 No - it'll be the same. You'll want to go under the right left of each stitch. It helps to start at the BOR so that you can easily replace your marker in the correct spot but it's not a requirement.

Thank you for showing how to do this with more than stockinette. I’m a beginner and I need to insert a lifeline into a smooth sand pattern which has I’m nervous to try and figure it out. Also does it change if you do this one the wrong side or does it work the same?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! And it would be the same on the WS, too. Just be sure you're putting the lifeline in purlwise and you should have no trouble at all!

Oops, one more thing. I checked out Tangles'N'Knots. They are closed for April, but couldn't find nylon cord except for making tassels. Could you give a bit more detail so I might find it? Thanks again!

How do I add lifeline for a leftie? Do I add left to right with the Right stitch?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter Жыл бұрын
Hi Laurie - that's a great question. Let me do a bit of research and figure that out for you! I think your theory is correct but I have a colleague who is a leftie knitter so let me confirm!
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter Жыл бұрын
Hey Laurie - I checked with my left-handed knitter friend and she said you can add it left to right or right to left across your row as long as you insert the needle purlwise into the stitch (if you're placing the lifeline while the stitches are on your needle). Or pick up the "front" leg of the stitch as it's mounted on your needle (if it's below the needle) you should be all set. So for a left-handed knitter, for the latter option, it sounds like it would be under the left leg (the opposite of what I demonstrate). I hope that helps! But let me know if you have more questions!
