Calling out Black 2 and White 2 as being "DLC split up into two games" isn't really fair to those games as they are actual proper sequels. If any titles deserve that dubious honor, it's Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

I'm so glad somebody finally talked about how little Pokemon games do to prepare you for online battles. I've seen so many people say that the battle system is outdated when they've only experienced the easy single player and haven't even touched competitive Pokemon where people actually put thought into their movesets and choice of hold items. I don't think the battle system is outdated, I think the Ai fails to use the battle system to its fullest potential.

29:13 Black 2 & White 2 are technically sequels set two years after the original Black & White. Saying that they are just rereleases of Black & White is like saying that Super Mario Galaxy 2 and to a certain extent Majora's Mask are just rereleases of Super Mario Galaxy and Ocarina of Time respectively.

Cutting the Dex was NOT a good idea. Just because having a smaller dex gives YOU incentive to complete it, doesn't mean it's good for others who enjoy having a large dex and variety of pokemon, especially when a dex cut means pokemon not in the dex can't even be transferred into the game.

I think my main issue with the cut Dex is the fact it's cut content when the game is already in such a bad way, game freaks silly excuses, the fact the game is £20 more expensive than previous games AND the fact this is the main series debut on a home console, if they were gonna cut the dex this was the absolute worst time to do it. I spent most my time In the game trying to justify the cut and nothing in the game made me think otherwise. Also super happy to see this in my sub box

They could have subverted the "friendly rival" trope by having a rival that starts out optimistic but becomes more and more bitter the more you beat them and basically steal their dream from them. But no, Hop just bends over for you the entire game.

"So you know that company Bethesda? It was considered to be a true pioneer in the gaming world....Then Fallout 76 happened." As a huge Pokemon fan this hurts cause it's kind of true. Pokemon is on such a tight schedule of yearly releases in order for everything else TCG VGC anime merch to release on time that the games have started to suffer for it. Pokemon has SUCH potential but GF is just too scared to do anything radically different. It's sad. I really think if Pokemon took its time, or if GF learned to optimize the games would be really something else going into modern gaming.

The National Dex isn't supposed to be quick or easy to obtain, and cutting out pokemon people already have and want to use is not okay. The National Dex is not for you. It is for completionists and competitive players who want to put in the effort. Just eliminating it so you don't feel like you're missing out on something you can't be assed to do is not fair to anyone.

I honestly wish pokemon could get a new developer I just don't think gamefreak has the talent to make a fully realized open world rpg pokemon with good world design and some actual depth/good writing.

Honestly the main reason why I don't like the Dex cut is purely because you can't transfer previous pokemon from your other games. I mean think about a pokemon you've used since Gen III, or maybe a challenge pokemon run. You want to preserve it and it serves as a memory. That's honestly the biggest reason why I dislike the dex cut.

They outsourced those projects to other developers, like Genius Sonority. The people who DON'T own the franchise put more *love* into their games than GameFreak themselves. Yeah. While this review was fair overall, I'd like to correct a misconception about the National Dex argument. Pokemon Sun and Moon didn't actually have a "National Dex" either. You only had to capture 300 (or 400 in ultra Sun/Moon) to have your dex considered "Complete". You didn't actually have to catch them all. But you could *still* transfer over all of your Pokemon, regardless of whether they were in the regional Dex or not. That's what people are upset about. This reasonably sized Dex you wanted existed in generation 7.

I think it's the pokemon company for not giving Game Freak enough time to do everything properly. That's why it looks like half of the animations are good while the other half looks... well half assed. Because of the pressure to meet the schedule release of the anime and the cards Game Freak has to do the impossible and that leads to them cutting a lot of corners resulting in a rather bland pokemon game.

I personally think an insane number of pokemon right from the beginning could really make the game more fun. Maybe not for a completionist but for casual players (which is the majority) it could make for more varied playthroughs and have you making very different teams of pokemon.

Well, Sun and moon never had a national dex either. That wasn't a thing you really were meant to strive for, they just had them all in the games. My stance is always the same. We don't need a national dex, but we do need to have them all available regardless if they appear in the region or not. That's like saying, nope Koalas can't exist in zoos in America cause Koalas are from Australia and America isn't Australia, so there are no Koalas in America, period. Just because something doesn't usually appear in a specific place doesn't mean it doesn't exist on the planet somewhere else and can't be brought over.

How is it that no one ever aknowledges that the dex cut was based on lies and empty promises. I'm not mad that I won't be able to catch and use Zorua/Zoroark in the main story unless I go through a pay wall, I'm mad because all the lies about snapping them out of existance over better animations and more polish new pokémon models I do think is smart (immersive) that not every pokémon is found in every region due to weather/geography, I have no issue with that (specially legendaries, unless part of the story)

I agreed with you on pretty much every front except for 2 things. 1. I honestly hate dynamaxing. I don't think it's a suitable substitute for Z-moves or Mega Evolutions. I kinda wish Game Freak would stop trying to one up themselves with the new battle gimmicks every generation and just stick to introducing new megas. That was a great concept that didn't need to be one up'd (especially since they haven't been able to yet) 2. The dex thing was almost a deal breaker for me. Especially since almost none of my competitive mains made it in and I found most of the new Pokemon to be awful. I was even more turned off by the fact that the reasons Game Freak gave us for this decision were straight up lies. Though I'm confused....You said you were happy that the dex was cut because it makes it easier to "catch 'em all" (too easy if you ask me. I liked the added challenge that each new gen brought. It helped lengthen the life of each game for me) but you're also....happy that we're about to get 200 more pokemon added back? Wouldn't that make it harder for you and add on to everything you said you didn't like about the National Dex? Especially since I'm willing to bet that the rest of the Pokemon *are* going to be implemented this way, with more packs.

19:32 - 23:00 They actually do in Sun and Moon, and especially Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (mostly in Ultra)! The Totem Pokemon all use unique Doubles strats, weather set-ups, entry hazards, good use of type coverage and support Pokemon, held items, etc. Even in Ultra, some Trainers have varied movesets and good AI, like Guzma at Aether Paradise or some of Rainbow Rocket's members. In both SM and USUM, the game also has Trainers called Trial Guides or Route Bosses that also ease you into competitve strats and teach you about them, and they often reward you for beating them by giving you the competitive item they used. If you don't use any of the cheese strats the game gives you for beginner players/kids, like I did, a lot of it (mostly in Ultra) serves as a decent fair challenge that makes you think. Not Dark Souls-difficult, obviously, but there's a noticeable amount of thought put into Alola's bosses than there have been in any other game, and it does a good job at easing you into how to use some competitive items by using them against you. It frustrates me to no end that, by comparison, Galar has every Trainer absolutely SUCK except for Leon, who ends up being vastly higher-leveled than Eternatus and Rose, the last bosses you faced. I'm EXTREMELY GLAD you brought up my exact gripe against this series in this timestamp, because no one agrees with me! They keep accusing me of thinking I'm expecting a "ridiculous amount of difficulty for a kids' game," or "unfairly wanting the game to grow up with me and alienate newcomers" but I'm not! Rom hacks often get it wrong by trying to be "extremely difficult" by requiring tons of grinding or intense limitations, but all I'm asking is for the game to actually USE the strategies it has against you for a proper challenge. I've brought up everything you've said for months and months before I even found your channel, so you have no idea how cathartic it is to finally find someone who understands! Especially when 7th gen was such a step in the right direction, only for 8th gen to go three steps back! Definitely subscribed. I don't agree with every single point you've made, but this was such a cathartic standout!

ok some problems i have with the video are - The differences between third versions and Paid DLC is that you have the option of buying the OG versions of the 3rd game meanwhile you HAVE to buy the Base 60$ SW&SH games then pay an additional 30$ to get the 3rd ver treatment - I'm sure someone has already pointed this out but BLACK & WHITE 2 ARE *_NOT_* TWO 3RD VERSIONS: They are proper SEQUELS to the original BW, it's like saying Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse is just SMT 4 but with more content - You pointed out how bad it is for GameFreak to re-release the same game but with more content but failed to mention how Atlus (they guys who make the Persona games) literally do the same thing with like P4 and P4Golden or P5 and P5Royal.

Ok, so what people fail to understand or actually see is that this game was originally being developed for the DS systems. Why, well think about it. It’s Nintendo and Game Freak. They have never been labeled as lazy when it comes to game development. This all started back when the Switch launched. They didn’t know if the Switch was going to be successful or not. Why do you think at first they we’re still on the hype train of keeping the DS systems alive. “Oh the DS will live happily along side the Switch and we are not killing it” but not even a year later they came out saying that no more main series games would be releasing for the DS systems and as of now only 3rd party games are being made for it. Why, because they saw that the Switch was selling. Understand that these games originally would take more less a couple of years to develop. Especially because they were coming out for dated hardware. Pokémon Sword and Shield was originally being developed for the DS systems but when they saw that the Switch was selling, they quickly changed the rest of the development to the Switch. Remember when I said that main series or first party games would no longer be coming out on the DS systems, well VIOLA!!!!! So now Game Freak is scrambling to try and get this game out for the Switch instead because Nintendo could not go back on their word by releasing this game on the DS systems when they had already confirmed that only 3rd party games would be supported on the DS moving forward. Hence you get Sword and Shield as they are today!! No voices, no national dex because they did not have time to add it to the Switch’s game code, underwhelming graphics that look like they should be on the DS hardware, some Pokémon not having attack animations etc.. So in the hein sight, it’s not that Game Freak was lazy with this game, it had to do with the set of circumstances that the Switch found itself and I’m more than 100% sure that this game would have been the very last Pokémon game for the DS systems.

I feel like every time it looks like the Pokémon franchise is going to move in a new direction one generation, it takes a hard u-turn the next generation. For instance: Gen 5. Story and characters are the primary focus. 156 new Pokémon. Actual significant differences between the two versions. And rather than third versions, we get full-blown sequels. Cool! Maybe these will become the new franchise traditions, at least for a little while. Gen 6. Story and characters non-existent. No sequels or anything. WAY more focus on old Pokémon over new ones. HEY REMEMBER CHARIZARD??? Gen 5 mons barely get any attention. No real differences beyond mascot legendaries. Gen 7: Island Challenge instead of gym challenge. Story is again the focus but with a twist: Lillie is effectively the main character, while the player is quite literally the audience POV. Ultra beasts, ultra space and a whole plethora of possibilities to be expanded on. Evil team is a genuinely clever subversion of previous games. Gen 8: HEY REMEMBER CHARIZARD. It feels like one step forward and then one step back again. I hope that since they’re now doing dlc instead of full on third games, the work cycle will be more lenient on Gamefreak but it always feels like we’re a step away from really breaking new ground.

"Inconsistent" is the word I would use for these games. You're right, there are so many things that are so 50/50 about it, that it's just a "blah" game. It's neither great or terrible. It just...exists. Now, my only issue with the dex cut was money. Of course, I understood that something like this was bound to happen. Yet, the fact of the matter is, I already paid for the games and caught the Pokemon. Why should I be punished to pay an extra subscription service just to keep my own collection? Look, I know maintaining app services isn't easy or cheap. But Pokemon make more money than any other franchise, surely a free storage app as a "thank you for your support of these games" wouldn't have been too much trouble. That's honestly all it would have taken to get me to buy the game: a free app. I don't want to have to pay endless subscription fees just to keep my own data. But, it is what it is. Pokemon Go may not be as fun, but it's free, and it has access to the National Dex (gens 1-5 as of now). So, guess what I'll be playing?

They cut so many of my favorite Pokemon and other popular ones. Even if I could forgive them for it, it doesn't give me much incentive to wanna play the games, especially with the lackluster quality we got in return. If they're gonna unnecessarily (they could make it work) cut the roster that much, it's gotta have a good return in exchange.

36:15 It's actually generally not the case that GMax pokemon are superior to their DMax counterparts. It only changes one move type, and many of them are worse than the standard effect for their type. Stealth rocks are nice, but free rain is better. Residual fire spin damage is okay, but not anywhere near as good as setting up sun.

One note to make about competitive battling in SS Pokemon; Battle Simmulators stills exist. Getting into a competitive battle is almost a literal click away, and you don't even need a copy of these games for it.

Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, when making the jump to the Nintendo Switch, expanded their series' formulas far beyond our imagination with ambitious, masterfully crafted games that have received critical acclaim across the board. What does Pokémon, Nintendo's ultimate moneymaker and the highest-selling media franchise of all time, do for *it's* jump to the system? Play it safe. Looks like they didn't get *all* the small stuff out of the way with the Let's Go! titles. Something I think Pokémon should do, now that it's on an HD console, is update the Pokémon cries again. We've had digitized sounds since the beginning, but now I think they're on powerful enough hardware to give these things as close to lifelike creature voices as humanly possible. That, combined with improved animation quality, would make the 890+ Pocket Monsters feel that much more alive. They attempted this sort of thing in the Pokémon Stadium games, and those were on the Nintendo 64. Also, they've pretty much already done so with Pikachu and Eevee by giving them their voices from the anime (although I don't think *every* Pokemon should just have their anime voices in the games). Of course, this is just a suggestion. I'm certainly glad that they finally added the option to skip the early game tutorials. I don't know how the demand for such a thing fell on deaf ears for the longest time, but at least Game Freak got the message before we grew old and wasted away. Now I hope to Arceus almighty that whenever they get to Generation IX, and possibly do those long-awaited Diamond and Pearl remakes, they keep it. It's been too long a time coming. It's rather bizarre that Pokémon's big entry on the Nintendo Switch didn't please crowds the way that Mario and Zelda's did. I hope the system gets a long lifespan and Generation IX is developed for it, with much more effort behind the development. After what a saving throw the Switch has been for Nintendo in regards to sales numbers, it deserves to have the highest quality games from *all* of the company's top franchises, including one as celebrated and hot-selling as Pokémon.

Very well rounded review. I agree completely. Another thing I have said before, Game Freak seem to not want to admit, or don't realise that atleast half it's players are people in their 20s or 30s who grew up with the games. Don't they want to keep that 50% happy too. Step it up game freak.

So... Trading, Backtracking, Breeding, & Training, everything expanded the post-game is bad...? I mean people just wanted the ability to transfer in via Pokemon Home after it was released. It wasn't like people wanted them to all be found between the two games, not even in the original Gold & Silver was this possible! You needed to transfer Pokemon in from RGBY games. Heck none of the Gen 7 games even had a National PokeDex, which honestly after I was done exploring the little bit of Poni Island and completing the Regional Dex I was done with the game. I touched Gen 7 maybe half a dozen times after the main story just to get event Pokemons...

The Pokémon, characters, music, setting are really good, but it’s weighed down by poor writing and unfinished animation. Such a shame.

Honestly, this game had a lot of potential but piss poor execution.

Your can do monotype well with good gym leaders. Good movesets, IVs, LVLs, type coverage. For example you want to run a grass types team. Ferrothorn adds a lot of type coverage, ludicolo defends against fire and whimsicott with prankster go first with various status and competitive moves amoung others

When this game was announced i was so excited I was going to buy a switch to play it I was going to even bring my original starter with me- my blaziken from emerald. Its been with me for well over a decade. Then i found out more and more and more about this game... Unless a lot changes (which yay looks like it is) or the 3rd version looks really good...i wont be buying this. And what happened to the kind of writing we saw in Unova? Even my friends who played it and liked this game, they admit the story is the worst in the franchise

We live in a world where negativity takes the front lines. But I'm gonna say it very boldly: I freaking love Pokemon Sword and Shield! For starters, I was definitely pleased to see the English/Scottish theme following the Hawaiian theme of Sun and Moon. Now I'm American, not British, but I just don't care for Hawaii. I'm a northerner, a lover of the mountains, and Sword and Shield had a much closer theme to what I like. Not to mention the legendary duo who I just adore! I also love how much more open these games are than the ones before them. Granted, I hate how linear the story is, but I love the strides they made to bring players together online. It's why I honestly hated the Diamond and Pearl remakes, yeah I was greatly disappointed in them. Plus, this is one of three generations where I love all three starter Pokemon equally, the other two being Hoenn and Unova.

Regarding skill/tech teaching in the game and gyms trainers (and leaders) always having the same type of pokémon... Well... They're actually teaching type matchups which is the most basic battle tech in the franchise. It may be obvious for you and I because we've played it since Gen 1, but for newcomers it may be hard to understand with all types and how they play with eachother, so havin it streamlined to the player is actually a good choice. However, I think the main story of the game should NOT include you winning badges (or at least not beating the gym leaders) because they should be a challenge, and, c'mon, a trainer with 2 pokemon leveled 20 and 19... is just Meh. We could get badges from the other trainers that would make for the game story cotinuity, and then, only after we have strong enought pokémon, we could challenge the leaders, after the main story is completed. Gym leaders should also have 6 pokémon - There's no explanation (in the games) for leaders having few and weak pokémon (in the anime, many of them say they choose how many and which pokémon they use based on how many badges the trainer has or how strong it's pokemon are, but there's nothing like that in the games) -. Then I think it would make sense to call they 'Gym Leaders'

I agree, THE SPECIAL MOVES IN THIS GAME ARE FREAKING AWESOME - especially Hyper Beam. The physical moves are ultra lame. Some of us, LIKE to catch 'em all! It is a fun challenge. Plus the fact we cannot see certain mons collide in these titles sucks.

I’m SOO GLAD that someone actually brought up the lack of voice acting in these games. When I first played this earlier this month, I wondered why they even made this decision of not having voice acting at all. It was the same issue I had with Hyrule Warriors when it first came out on Wii U. Especially when the cutscenes in that game had proper lip movements and constant chatter during gameplay. The latter of which I kept on forgetting about BECAUSE of that lack of voice acting! Not even the Definitive Edition on Switch got any added voiceovers, and that was released after Breath of the Wild! It would’ve been a perfect opportunity to do what Square Enix did with Dragon Quest XI when that got brought over to Western shores. But no. Instead, they give us this BS excuse in the Nintendo Everything article about this subject. Subject, I implore you to check out this article whenever you have the time. I think you’ll end up being ticked off reading that as I was when I came across this.

I tend to mostly agree with you on your points except for the dex cut. They didn't have to add them to the dex to keep them in the code. Sun and Moon didn't have them in the dex but allowed you to use them. I see where you're coming from on it but I think personally that more character options is generally better than less.

I mean my main problem with the Pokedex is 2 things, 1: While i may not be the kinda person to wanna complete a whole Pokedex, there are still people that really like having all Pokemon collected aka Catch Them All, then 2: A lot of my favorite Pokemon didn't even make it in, now I'm not saying i wouldn't like any of the new Pokemon, but after beating the game once with the new Pokemon, I like to redo the game with my favorite team which is mainly all Johto Pokemon, but only 1 of the 6 I use in my team even made it in.

On those battle animations, almost none of them involve moving the character model to give the character life. It's all special effects except for "the chosen few" like Cinderace Pyroball, etc

Pokemon are still segregated, the story still remains lackluster, etc. Also think about in the future after the switch, how are people going to play this game when the internet is discontinued?
