Plants can serve so many functions beyond the one or two you might initially choose them for like food or beauty. These ground cover plants for Florida Ill be showing you can eliminate weeds, reduce watering needs, attract pollinators and beneficial insects, put fertilizer into the soil, produce food, and of course be a beautiful addition to your landscape. Here are 12 of my favorites ground covers for Florida I have planted around my urban Florida food forest. They include native Florida ground covers, ground covers for shade, and more.

Don't forget the edibility of sweet potato leaves! They're a delicious and nutritious spinach replacement and one one of my favorite greens from the food forest. 🌿🌿🌿

Elise, you don't just make great videos and supply super resilient plants. Your Seed Exchange was a blast! Learned so much, and Sacred Lands is a must-visit location in St. Pete. Thanks again, and it was lovely meeting you. (Leila is definitely the Hostess with the Mostest, just adorable!)

Sunshine mimosa and porterweed can be pretty aggressive. A nice thing about frog fruit is it will attract peacock butterflies. Also might want to consider purslane... edible and highly nutritious.

Good evening Urban Harvest. I completely agree that it's definitely better to convert at least a significant portion of one's urban yard to growing edible items - considering how many edible plants and weeds are out there: Dandelion, purslane, Sheep Sorrel, Curly Dock, Chickweed and Plaintain among them - a great way to properly preserve our sustainable resources. That being said, have a wonderful weekend and thanks for sharing a tour of your lovely garden. 😊😊😎😎

Hi there! Thanks so much for your Florida focus videos. I want to convert at least part of my lawn and am thinking of doing the mix of sunshine mimosa and perineal peanut. What’s the best way to get started.

Where can I buy seeds or plants of potato mint, Sunshine mimosa, perennial peanut online? Do you think they would do well in Phoenix - temperature wise were similar to Florida but even hotter and a lot drier.

Do you know which would be suitable that would allow for chopping without having to replant? Essentially “mowable”.

While visiting my county extension office in Tampa, I was told the best way to plant perennial peanut was after killing the grass and placing it down in mat form instead of seed. Do you agree with this method? Also, would this be the best way to grow the other ground covers mentioned in your video?
@TheUrbanHarvest

Ground cover plants can usually outcompete other species but if you have the time a little extra weeding won't hurt. Starting with a clean slate will allow the new ground cover to thrive.
