The courtships and marriages of both Fergie and Diana seem to be highly contrived and very minimalistic. The didn’t really know each other at all. This makes me admire Prince William and Katherine for taking time to really know each other and what the commitment to Royal life would require.

I loved Sarah's wedding gown. It's my favourite of all royal wedding gowns. The scoop neckline and fitted bodice were perfection. It's elegance was a relief after the over the top 'new romantic' style of Diana's gown.

‘“ With the blessing of their parents, the young royals were given special permission to join the crowds partying outside the Palace gates. Then, together with a group of 16 members of the royal household, the royals made their way across London. Reflecting on the occasion as part of a Channel 4 documentary in 2015, the Queen’s cousin, The Hon Margaret Rhodes, said: "We crossed the forecourt at Buckingham Palace and got to the railings and there were these masses and masses of people. There was a general thing of, 'We want the King and Queen', which we all frantically joined in with and were amazed when, five or 10 minutes later, the windows opened and they came out onto the balcony. It was like a wonderful escape for the girls. I don't think they’d ever been out among millions of people. It was just freedom - to be an ordinary person." What followed was an evening of fun, laughter, and surprising firsts (including a disguise gaffe) as the group set off on an adventure. As the late Queen told the BBC, "We were terrified of being recognised - so I pulled my uniform cap well down over my eyes. A Grenadier officer among our party of about 16 people said he refused to be seen in the company of another officer improperly dressed. So I had to put my cap on normally."‘

Diana, Sara & Meghan were failures in their roles in the BRF, they also shared the experience of having no mother (or mother figure) in their lives. Could the absence of a mother be the reason why they were unstable & unsuccessful as members of the Royal Family? Sara seems to be a good mother, but Diana & Meghan (IMO) were not good mothers because they put their desire for revenge first & foremost in their lives destroying their families, friends & marriages. Mother are important; good mothers are a treasure. When the mother is absent there is a serious void.

@@ajune583 no, Diana and charles went on just 12 dates before he proposed her. After Engagement she moved in Buckingham palace with charles for security reasons. Palace tried to pretend that Diana is living with Charles's Grand mother in Clarence house but later Diana herself reviled that she was living in Buckingham palace and often they had breakfast and dinner together. According to highgrove staff, before even engagement Diana went there many times and spend time privately with the prince in his room for hours and they would always take shower after that.

I think trooping the color would be a marvelous sight from that perspective but the noisy daily changing of the guard would get pretty tired.

It would be marvelous to see and hear the changing of the guard ceremony from that perspective one or two times, but after that it might wear a bit thin if there was no getting away from it! Sarah does specifically mention the noise factor - not being able to have a phone conversation so it must have been fairly loud!

I just found a copy of this book at our library book sale...I'm actually looking forward to reading it. Oh, and I think that I'd heard that the way that the royals wave is partly because it's easier on the wrist.

I find it strange how she described the “Royal wave” . I was told, it was keep the wrist and forearm straight, hand slightly cupped then move the forearm and wrist, slightly side to side. You can turn the open, cupped palm towards yourself, occasionally to ease any stiffness in the arm. The “screwing in a lightbulb” is how some describe the hand movements in Indian dance.

This is my first chapter with Sarah's story. Argh. Can't bear them. Never could. I enjoyed your Reviewing though, as always ❤❤ I noticed the public's eagerness was similar to the adoration Meghan initially received. As Prince Phillip wisely said, Don't take it personally!

That was a great chapter, Shauna! I thought it was interesting to hear about Sarah's experiences leading up to her wedding as compared to Diana's. Sarah was a bit older than Diana when she met and married Andrew, but they both had to learn the ropes when it came to royal duties and perfecting that royal wave. It seems like some of them employ the "screwing in a lightbulb" motion while the more senior members like the Queen Mum and King George back in the day looked like they were waving on traffic with more of a guiding motion. I had to laugh when you were discussing Andrew's teddy bears, because the Netflix movie Scoop does a great job incorporating it into a brief scene where Andrew has a silly meltdown when a woman from his staff (played in the movie by Kate Winslet's daughter) places a stuffed toy kangaroo to join Andrew's teddies on his bed. As the British would say, what a tosser! LOL!

Picture this. You are given training on how to fold and iron and polish your boots and place your gear and make and keep your bed and gear in order. They give you a couple of pictures or diagrams to go by. When you leave your room for the day a few people go thru each persons room with a ruler and examine how perfectly you followed directions. You come home at the end of the day and everything you own is thrown on the floor and or you bed is stripped and bedding is on the floor. It all has to be laundered and put back by morning perfectly or they will do it again until you learn. You still have homework and work duties that must also be done before lights out. On inspection days you are at attention while they do this and can and will scream in your face with you unblinking or shove a sock in your mouth..if you gag they scream it must be dirty you are accused. If you are perfect you may get a nod of their head or a small grunt as they leave. It is not BIZARRE...it is military training and millions of people have done it...including Andrew. A few bears on his bed is a cakewalk...he gave the staff a photograph as their guide....no excuse. BTW, HMQ Elizabeth looked over the table before a state dinner.

sorry, but you wouldn't see the trooping of the colour from Buckingham Palace, that happens in horseguard, annually, at the other end of the Mall. You are thinking of the Changing of the Guards, which happens daily in the palace forecourt.

Teddies might be weird. But he obviously loves/needs them. Important enough for him to personally show new staff which order to put them in. I think if person agrees to look after the room/teddy bears they have no business complaining or revealing to press/public.
