Learn how to draw a portrait with charcoal by modeling the form and adding the details of the face. Vine charcoal is layered and smudged to build up the value relationships before developing the details of the face with compressed black and white charcoal. Facial features are detailed with charcoal pencils. For more on this lesson, visit thevirtualinstructor.com/how-...

A million thanks! When I was 14 my mother enrolled me in an art class for portraiture and figure drawing. I was the only kid amongst say 12 adults. It was held at the Brodie St library. I was so shy. I blushed nonstop. We drew in both pencil and charcoal. I actually got rather good. Used to sell pastel portraits for a couple of bucks. I became a commercial artist. Rarely did portraits anymore and I missed it. About-40 years passed. And recently a hankering to reprise both figure drawing and portraiture made my fingers twitchy. I made two dreadful attempts. Pondered them for days and realized I was sketching lines where I needed to sketch light and the absence of light. That’s wonderfully illustrated by the charcoal study here. Thanks so much! Hope this gets me back on track!

Wow ! I learned how to draw portraits with graphite really well over the course of 2 years. My drawings do not lack realism for it being graphite but I stopped here because I keep hearing charcoal makes things really come to life. So it does. Looking forward to another 2 years

Good looks tend to fade out but the mind never does, it only grows. That's why good portrait art at all times needs to capture the soul of the subject. The face is the mirror of the mind. It's often in the eyes, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart. Eyes in artworks have something special. Eyes often times say more then words can. Eyes are very similar to drawings in that regard, if you can say it in words there's no need to draw it... I guess art is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see.

Its critical for beginners to develop their knowledge of plane changes. Since the face is very complex, plane changes may not be clearly visible regardless of lighting. Effectively recognizing plane changes will help push your portrait drawings further. Line quality is the second thing i should mention. Through lose or hard lines, the ability to differentiate cast shadows and soft round curves of the face with line quality will put your art 10 steps forward. Start slow when rendering. Shape shape shape! If you’re too ambitious early on one will develop a lot of bad habits that will hinder your growth as an artist.

Very nice Sir, But I do not understand The "Light Angle"
@cchemmes2096
@cchemmes2096 4 жыл бұрын
It is the direction of the light source to the subject... can be from either side, or above, or backlit. Usually you want to select one main light source, so you can create 3D forms, having lights, darks, midtones, shadows, highlights, etc... otherwise, it is hard to make a drawing look 3D

How do you get your paper not to tear up after blending the charcoal?
@cchemmes2096
@cchemmes2096 4 жыл бұрын
This happened to me too... use better paper, especially cotton paper, like strathmore 500 charcoal paper... I had strathmore 400 drawing easily tear in a spot with not much erasing/ shocking considering it is 400. Cotton papers take more working
