I think his condition was linked to feelings of guilt. It started when he denied Jimmy the chance to work at HHM, then he started to recover when Jimmy destroyed him in court but started to get worse again when he told Jimmy that he never really cared about him. I think he feels guilty for treating Jimmy this way, but since he can't admit it to himself since he's convinced he's doing the right thing, he instead blames it on an illness.

I also want to add that you can say that Jimmy is the lantern. When Chuck kicks the lantern in the end of season 3 to commit suicide, in truth he’s symbolically destroying what’s left of Jimmy’s morality which is what he (Chuck) has been doing the whole time. Bit by bit he takes pieces from Jimmy until he finally destroys him for good with the destruction of the lantern.

I realized it was all in Chuck’s head when he freaked out about Rebecca on the phone. He was convinced that she was talking to another man and she was going to leave him because he was really boring and unlikable unlike Jimmy, and that’s when his symptoms started.

Didn't Mike plant something in Chuck's house earlier in S3? Perhaps that was keeping the meter running and it was hidden so well that Chuck couldn't find it..

Yeah, looks like it was a wiretapping, which Jimmy wanted to use but then decided not to use

I always thought that the metre had already stopped running when he switched off the breakers and he was just hallucinating a nonexistent problem because of how far gone he was.

The lantern is the first and the last focused object in the episode meaning it is a symbol for his better, happier days but also for his self-destruction at the same time.

What we see in Chuck is wickedness played out as it is more subtle and laid back. He was so hateful and vindictive that when he could not get his way he turned on himself and was consumed by his burning hate.

I love your videos but sometimes I wonder how you miss some things. Like when he was writing in his journal that last night. He said the three things, the colors and what they were, he started writing in the journal but stopped in the column where he was supposed to say how he was feeling. What his emotion was. At that point, he closes the book and goes down and shuts off all the breakers. He couldn't face his emotions and after that, he lost all control.

Thanks for the support, and good job pointing out exactly what chuck didn't write down. As he was writing down information regarding his condition, he didn't want to write down the emotion he felt about how his symptoms were getting worst.

His symptoms also parallel with Anxiety/anger control issues. I think he HID this fact to make everyone think he was less crazy, and over time he actually started to believe his lie as true. So every time the anxiety arises he actually believed it to be Electricity related when it was all in his head.

My Mother has EHS. They should speak with a mental health therapist about covert venerable narcissism and OCD. Narcissists are extremely toxic people who pretend to be victims and EHS is one very strange form of extreme socially dysfunctional covert narcissism. The solution is overcoming the narcissism and the EHS is just psychosomatic so if you could fix the narcissism the EHS inherently is “fixed” also.

Tearing down the house had nothing to do with arresting his symptoms but rather a means to an end, find the source of electricity before he took his life, an act which I believe he had already chosen to carry out. Not being able to pin this down just exacerbated his condition which had indeed come back with a vengeance. i really think Check had decided as evidenced by his canceling of his appointment and not reserving the following weeks slot. That he knew before Jimmy even walked in, Howard was the obvious last straw that broke the camel's back. I like your channel and look forward to seeing more as we await another season. Well GOT is back this week, only a few I really am into.

I think the show would tell us if that was the case. They could easily show chuck's perspective with the meter moving and then a separate scene with the meter not moving. It's a big stretch to say he was visually hallucinating.

The show did go to great lengths to show us how mentally unstable he was though. Nothing is too much of a stretch for Vince Gilligan.

The disc may be turning too slowly for the counter to advance, or more likely, the show runners have rigged a fake meter for the disc to rotate, but didn't bother with the counter -- not thinking that eagle eyed people on YT and reddit would be analyzing such absurdities. I think that the hallucination of the spinning disc, having never established that Chuck suffers from visual hallucinations, is a violation of verisimilitude. It's not needed that Chuck has this new symptom in order to accept the situation. He's bad enough already with hallucinating his allergy to electricity.

Those are all fair points. I just have no idea what would still be drawing power if he turned off all the circuits. I've seen speculations that Mike planted a bug in the house when he was there, but I have seen no evidence of this nor does that really make sense. I guess its also possible that something small really was drawing power and it simply doesn't matter what it was.
@originalhgc
@originalhgc 7 жыл бұрын
Seth Carter, Yes they showed us precise ways that Chuck is unstable. But they don't expect us to analyze electric meter counters in order to imagine new ways that he's unstable. They show us what they want us to know. They don't plant clues in the possible inconsistencies of how dramatic props are functioning.
@paulrobinson733

Of course the meter has power. The service drop and meter belong to the power company. If the numbers are not changing you are not drawing power from the service. If Chuck is not dead the power company will be coming after him for destroying their property. And on top of the huge electric bill they will give him, the homeowner will be responsible for repairs.

i think Chuck has a big Ego. Now that he is not a part of the firm that he built over years (his own doing), he cannot handle the defeat and his Ego is crushed. Now he cannot look down upon Jimmy as before. He had a chance to retire gracefully and may be practice/ consult from home as freelancer but then its chuck..

Some littles things tickles me... Like the others I'd like to know if there's still electricity in his house or if he's hallucinating (don't think it's the bug...). And on the other hand, I can't stop thinking he have grow some beard in the last lantern scene... I need to rewatch the episode but I don't remember any clue that the timeline was skipping some days... First time I saw it it was clear to me that his last scene was some days after he broke down is house, he looks like a man with a 3 days beard to me... Maybe a flashback in the next season ? Something happen in beetwen the scenes ? Or maybe i'm going as crazy as Chuck xD. (Sorry for the english, frog eater/lemonsieurbaguette here !)

If somebody rescue Chuck from the fire and take him to a hospital and if Jimmy come to see him there, Will Chuck tell Jimmy about their mother called for Jimmy at the final moment of her life? If it happens, it will be an emotional scene.

Why are you arguing so hard about the electricity. It doesn't matter at all! Chicanery proved that his condition comes from his own mind. I think it's important the phone call with Dr Cruz secretary, he doesn't want to go to therapy because he wants to die, the electricity thing was just an excuse, his life was pretty much ruined

Guilt for all the years of pain and suffering he put his brother through that in the end he lost his humanity and his marbles. He has to believe he is still sick because the truth hurts him more than anything, he was a good lawyer who forgot the golden rule of brotherhood. Never turn your back on your own family. They are all you have left. And Howard was almost like a son to Chuck, losing Jimmy, Howard and the final nail, losing his humanity. Chuck probably gets it that before he causes anyone anymore pain, to not stand in his brothers way, in a sense knowing that he was also to blame for his brother becoming Saul. Such a deep show. Jimmy becomes Saul. Saul=Paul. The whole series is about his reflection on where did he go wrong, that's why the series starts at him at the Cinnabon. Hopefully by the end of the series he can come back as James McGill and leave Saul for dead. Hopefully reunite with the love of his life and have a happy ending. Maybe we can see him reunite with Jessie as well. A nod to breaking bads ending.

So, on a bit of a different note, what do you think will happen to the 3 million dollars? Did it burn in the fire? Being a mental case, could he have deposited it just to make anyone (Jimmy or Howard) go through all kinds of hassles...Does he have a beneficiary?? Ah, season 4, where art thou....

Considering Chuck was just as, if not more wealthy than Howard, Chuck never needed Howard's money. He never expected Howard to pay him out of his own pocket, and it shocked him that Howard did that. Chuck probably never even cashed in Howard's money to be honest, which reminds me of how Howard ripped up Kim's check in a previous episode.
@thekopys3094

We still don't know what triggered Chuck's "allergy" in the first place, and we may never know (as with life, so in art). I think it's one of two things -- a) his wife leaving him or b) Jimmy announcing that he's a lawyer -- and I'm leaning toward (b). Any other suggestions?
@sethcarter4910
@sethcarter4910 7 жыл бұрын
Combination of both probably, maybe moreso b. Chuck is paranoid by nature and he does looooove the law, and he knows who slippin' Jimmy really is, extreme paranoia and depression does not make a good mental cocktail.
@brandonflannery6927
@brandonflannery6927 7 жыл бұрын
originalhgc I personally think it's a psychological reaction to his brothers success and admiration over the years. His wife left him, his mother called for Jimmy instead of him when she died, Jimmy became a lawyer under a shoddy firm, and ultimately, jealousy. These factors bottled up and shined through as a mental disorder (electromagnetic hypersensitivity) rather than a fit of physical hostility.

I know this was 5 years ago, however, I've watched the show over and over and over because I like it. I notice new things/details every time. I always thought that perhaps in combination with all you stated is that he may have had stages of dementia coming on. Dementia really does a number on the brain-I've seen it up close and personal as well as Alzheimer's! They are the very WORST disease a person can have as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, I started thinking about it after a couple times of watching the show and thought perhaps if this was a real life situation that is probably part of what happened to Chuck.

Janet Snakehole Youre obviously right, i do understand after seeing friends and family suffering from depression. First with my ex wife; i used to say things like; "if its unpleasant, think of something else" and other statements suggesting how illogical and self-induced depression might be, but she got me to gain a small understanding. After one of my children had depression, I became fully informed and compassionate in understanding there are often biological markers (like chemical imbalances) that cause some depression. I was speaking for myself in the comments and wasnt trying to be insensitive. Despite my experience, i have never experienced depression myself; i was just speaking for myself.
