For all the people who think tyson was the same after 1988 then before 89,need to check themeselves in to a mental institution. The entire scope of cus damato ideology was for tyson to be in a defenive first posture all the time. He used to tell tyson that it's the most important to be throwing combinations at angles where the other guy can't hit you. This is what created the intimidation factor,not the power in his shots, it was that the other guy realized he couldnt hit tyson.

I used to think that the ref stopped it early as well. However, the truth is, there was no way Tyson was winning this fight. Behind on the scorecards and out on his feet in round 10... he was being pummeled and had nothing to answer with. Actually, I'd say this is one of the most merciful stoppages I've seen.

NO-one what-so-ever! He is at the top of my all time greatest list. He was knocking down top tier fighters like dominoes...he was his worst own enemy.

Tyson was obviously not at his best here but he had some dangerous speed and power early in the fight. For that reason alone it was amazing that Holyfield just took the fight too him from the start and wore Mike down, considering he was a massive underdog. But the real story is Tyson ran out of steam and wasn't used to taking any form of punishment. Just watch the Ruddock fights, Tyson's conditioning and attitude was totally different, he ate Ruddock's bombs and was still determined, no signs of complaining to the ref, as in this fight. post prison Tyson couldn't deal with any offence from his opponent, if he didnt get them out of there before round five, he was done. Its the same old story but its true, Tyson was still dangerous post prison but not what he was in the 80s, after a four year lay off. To suggest otherwise is silly, just think about it, four years out, totally removed from the team that made him champ, no rooney, disgraced by society, broken down by prison and the system. and people still think this Tyson was prime lol

Holyfeild was brilliant with basic countering for this fight. Block the left and throw the left hook, block the right throw the right (especially the Right uppercut). It was beautiful basic counters. Yes he did throw the head alot but that can happen.

I can't believe after all these years -- and all the various analyses of this fight -- that people blame Holyfield for the head butts. The big one was because Tyson lunged into it, one was a double clash of heads, and the other one was because Tyson tried to get under Holyfield to throw an uppercut, missed wildly, and his head recoiled into Holyfield. Fact is Tyson knew he was beat after the second round.

I recently took another look at the tyson/spinks fight. if you analyze the fight frame by frame,everything tyson throws lands flush on spinks.TYsons instinctive ability to let his combinations go and all landing, was a direct result of the 6 yrs prior living in the gym. Eventually,with that much training and no breaks betweeen fights,he was able to close his eyes and still land 4 shots in 1 second.After 1988,it was an ordeal for him to land one head hunting shot!! forget about follow up shots
