That uppercut in the first round took a toll on Tyson. He was done after 3 rounds. A shadow of his former self. Lewis really knew how to take advantage of his long reach in all his fights.

Tyson had Plan A but no plan B. If he didn't knock out his opponent in the early rounds and it became a boxing match then he struggled throughout his career. Lewis was a much more accomplished boxer but many Americans didn't give him the credit he deserved.

Am now fifty ...I remember this fight , I cried then and honestly for unknown reason am teared up now ... Kid Dynamite was long gone before this fight , iron mike has broken better boxers than Lewis , shattered them to tiny shreds .. death of Cus D'Amato was the downfall of Mike .. Remember the twenty yr old Tyson ? ..well there you go, no more head movements here ...this was a shadow of Mike here ..just fighting to feed his kids here..sad ...Donovan "Razor" Ruddock is better than Lewis and with a broken jaw he embraced Tyson and called him the best after the fight ..

Sober as a judge me. The fireworks before the Lewis fight was just publicity to get more money in the pot for what Tyson knew would be his last big money fight. The ear biting was admittedly a weakness of sorts because he was frustrated by Evander's notorious use of the head. @@leroybailey7015

I watched the Douglas/Tyson fight live years ago. Watched this old replay at least 3 years ago. Lewis had the longest reach of any heavyweight ever. His Jab was a power hammer and at 250 pounds had lightning speed! Tyson even in his prime would have had to land an early round knockout to win against a opponent like Lewis. He was hardly a bastion of maturity, decency or sanity can't really blame them for not acknowledging him as a functioning adult.

With shorter boxers like Tyson, Marciano and Frazier, they have to always keep coming forward. They don't have the luxury of boxing on the outside. They can't use their height or weight advantage to lean on an opponent. They can't rely on the jab or take rounds off to regain their strength. I'm a fan of Tyson, but he stood no chance against Lewis or that deadly uppercut. Years early, who knows? Tyson was much quicker and more precise when he was younger. Even though they are the same age shorter fighters are usually done by the time they're in their early thirties. Taller boxers usually last longer. Lewis, Ali, Foreman, Holmes and so on.

I always felt a bit bad for Tyson, but this fight is as good an example as you'll find of his flaws. He's a fighter not a boxer. As soon as he lost that tiny little bit of speed that allowed him to close in quickly he was more or less done. Lewis outboxes him easily.

Speed, movement, energy, style, in Mike's first 5 years he mowed down guys like Lewis, no matter how tough, he never got hit this much and his movement and speed, both hand and body was superb, not way Lewis would have beat him in his prime, I could not stand Mike at the time, because he was so cocky, I love him now, have been a boxing fan my whole life, Mike was the best ever in my book, even though my man through all those years was Evander, but Evander would not have beat him in those first five years either.

Emmanuel Steward said to Lewis in the corner just before round 6 “You got a Dead man in front of you He just wants to Quit!!” At that point in Tyson’s career he was a 3 round fighter. Fast and furious knockout punches in 3 rounds ducking and weaving. If the fight went over 3 rounds he became very slow, tired and kinda gave up.
