A massive tornado that damaged homes in Carbon, Iowa, was just one of several that ripped through the southwest part of the state Tuesday afternoon.

Craig It would be worth seeing a tornado up close. It’s not likely the tornado will do a U-turn, in fact I haven’t seen a single tornado path which has. I would follow behind it about 1/4-1/2 mile.

I live in the tropics and we deal with our fair share of typhoons and super typhoons. But seeing a tornado with concentrated power stare you down like that is frightening. My heart would be racing if I ever saw it in person.

nah thats a baby. 2013 there was a 2.6 mile wide wedge tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma. THAT was gigantic.

I think this might be the best put in perspective for size of tornado video I've seen. Obviously tornadoes look big relatively speaking but rarely does it really feel that big due to something with the camera work. This one is crazy

All while these things come in the darkness of night, blowing 120-175mph, rain wrapped, and level towns in a few minutes, with ZERO WARNING (maybe 10-20 minutes that you should take cover) I’ll take the hurricanes any day.

I was born and raised in Iowa. I have seen tornados in Arkansas, outran one in Missouri, Sat on a knoll in Minnesota with several other cars and people, all standing on highway! We watched 3 tornados cross below us on a flat field and highway area! Guys, your photography was great! Just stay safe, tornadoes sometimes change directions!!

Yeah back in the late 90’s when in high school in MN we were at a calledc carnival, think called Swvanville. It was just before dusk & a call & reporte went out there was a major tornado coming right for the carnival. It had just been dark a short bit & the big group gathered talking well either we make a quick decision to take off immediately or just stay hope & ride it out. Of course most were drunk & I was with the few people who decided to try making a ditch out. About 3 cars fully loaded took off. Of course we were the one the tornado. Ended up hitting. & I mean hitting. It got to the point we had to pull over & hit the culverts until it blew over & it was some serious shit. Literally in a culvert, dark, foggy & shit blowing all over. It felt like 5-10’ but was probably 30-120” only. Later of course we found out it never even touched the fair/carnival & the party continued. While we were beaten up like praying to god in the ditch & all.👍🏼🫡🤯🙏🏼

I remember this was my first tornado I chased after I was laid off from my previous job. I didn’t know what I would do, but I knew I didn’t want to work in an office again so I sold most of belongings and drove up to Americas breadbasket. I am sorry, and praying, when I left the South we stopped for lunch four states over a little diner as we walked in they had one of those TV s on a hook to the right and about 30 people in a curve 3/4 of the room stacked with people just watching stacked staring at that TV, then I asked the woman with me was that my house it just ate ? Jason People say that tornadoes are dangerous to get close to because they change direction. I know that tornados obviously don’t go in perfect straight lines. But I’ve also never seen a tornado’s path make a u-turn. Is there a risk to being directly hit by a tornado if you are following from the exact direction that the same tornado came from?

@@andrewlinn7863 2013 Moore Oklahoma. Massive ef5 tornado killed a lot of people including some chasers. The tornado was heading east for quite some time, when it started to head north, then circled back to the west and almost lingered there a little. So the thing did a little loop and claimed lives bc people weren’t expecting it to turn around and hit them again. Absolutely tragic day.

That tornado is fairly small compared to an EF4 and an EF5 tornado

If this is the Greenfield tornado then it's at least an EF4. Size has no correlation to strength. The Elie 2007 F5 was very narrow and there have been EF1 wedges.

It may have alot to do with the record rise in global tempatures. J. 1988, Dr James Hansen stood before the United ststes senate announcing that planet Earth was in anew global warming event. He blamed it on the fossile fuel energy trapping and warming the planet. He said expect more severe storms, heat waves, Droughts. It's going to get much worse and destructive in the future as co2.now levels continue to climb

Oh wow that's the year I was born. That is quite a ways back but it just goes to show that things like that never really leave you. My hometown was flattened/wiped off the gawdam map by an F5 in 1991. 30-some years of nightmare fuel still. Granted; It did *NOT* help the nightmare fuel situation that my hometown was flattened a second time by an EF3 a couple of years ago. (Just.....WHY?) Anyway the point is that childhood trauma is probably going to stay with you for decades if not for life. Stay strong.

They are further than it looks. Zoom lenses compression distance. Also they try to stay very much behind them so they move away from the chasers as this one is doing.

I survived the 2011 outbreak man tornadoes make my my heart race . I will never come anywhere near close to a tornado, but shout out to the chasers , more nerves of steel than me. I just hope we never have another outbreak like 2011 and a Tri-State tornado ever again

It's a twister, it's a twister! Holy hell I would be freaked out. I've been caught under the bridge of a highway during a tornado when I was living in Oklahoma before. Those winds are scary.
