Just made this .... total beginner to having a finished product that I am proud of in about 3 hours. Had to redo the monkey fist about 6 times to figure out which way to twist on the turns. You need to have just the right amount of wraps for it to look good. Did 4 wraps on a 1 inch ball and you actually need 5 for it look good I think. Thanks for the vid.

That thing brings back a lot of happy memories! In my younger years I was a Linesman for a commercial ferry company with many and varied duties, but my main job (other than Customs paperwork) was tying up the vessels as they arrived. We used to call those knots Monkey Nuts, they were much bigger though and were attached to the end of a long line of rope called the Heaving Line. You wind the rope up like a Lasso, making sure to have a firm grip on your end of the rope, and with a firm swing you could launch that thing right into the hands of vessel engineers at a distance of 30ft (after a _lot_ of practice), the crew attaches it to one of the main heavy mooring lines and then you pull both lines back in and tie the vessel up (usually four mooring lines in total). The new guys always got laughed at by the French vessel crews, those things can go flying in any direction until you get the knack. We had a lot of banter, despite the language barrier, lol There were a lot of tears when that company went under, we all miss that job a lot, we were like a large dysfunctional yet loving family, lol Starting to feel sad now, lol, I’m off Happy New Year all! 🍻

Excellent tutorial! (Here's a tip.) If you cut the other 2 strands of paracord right before the snake knot, the lobster hook will be attached much better. It won't take much for the paracord loop to come apart at the end, and the hook to come off in the way he is showing it.

Very cool tutorial. Being a lazy person, I just wrap a 9 ounce lead fishing sinker in a bandana. Since it will crack a coconut, it should serve it's intended purpose nicely.

I started putting bouncy balls instead of ball bearings 20 something years ago. Monkeys fists look cool, tie on to many tools/items and make it so the end won’t slip through your hand. I would put a loop large enough to put my hand through before the monkeys fist knot. It was used to wrap around our wrists so we didn’t drop the tool attached when working up high. You get hit once with that ball bearing it’ll change your mind…. When it’s hanging out of your pocket it’ll swing around and get you in the sweet spot seemingly every time. 😆

i bought one of these on a keyring from amazon a while ago, before they stopped selling good self defense stuff, i added a pepper spray pouch that i converted to a lock back folding knife sheath and i do carry it, it works well as a conversation piece as well as a self defense tool. it wouldn't take a buck 110 in the pepper spray pouch but it did take the puma game warden nice and snug, it was on the table at lunch one day and one of my co-workers asked what it was so i tossed it to him and as soon as he held it in his hand he was really wanting one put together the same way, then he took the knife out and cut his finger with it

Not meaning to criticize, but I've noticed a lot of modern knot tiers have invented names for certain knots that sound foreign to someone with a nautical background, or even just to older folks. At time 7:05, you say you're tying a square knot, but it's technically & traditionally a right crown knot. I realize it "looks" square but that doesn't make it a square knot. When you are tying your shoes, the first thing you do is tie an overhand knot before you tie a bow knot. If you then place an 'alternating' overhand knot over the first one, that's a square knot. And what you are calling a snake knot is technically just a 2-strand crown knot. Over the past few hundred years, many people of various trades used and named knots in their normal course of work. Sailors, whalers, merchantmen, pirates, bakers, millers, livestock handlers, weavers and others, all using specialized knots well-suited to their needs. Loggers used axes to fell trees, farm wives used hatchets to split kindling for the wood stove, and Native Americans used tomahawks in battle. In a way, they all seem like the same tool, but the names and the usage are different & specific. I think it's important to keep & use proper names in order to honor traditions & history. The Ashley Book of Knots is a great reference for when, where, and how knots were named & used. I can use an undershirt, a tank top, and make a knot of the bottom part. Also if you make two of them, you can interlink the shoulder straps and you'll get a *"Tank Top Nunchucks"* But I think it's better to fight with one tank top wrecking ball in each hand. It's being like Thor fighting with two hammers. It's nonlethal but delivers a harder blow.

Nice I knew about monkey fist without the bearing but nice idea of course if you used longer cord and bigger fist and made 3 of them and weaved them together you could make a nasty bolo as well

in the old days these would be tied on the ends of ropes to help when throwing them. Some sailors would use them, others would cut them off when they saw them because they were dangerous

Very informative I learned how to do this locked up we would use a chunk of soap and just 4 way braid down with pressure and then put the handle down I’d would only work a few times

If anyone is struggling with the passes to make the two strings meet on the monkey fist, I recommend tying a string and sewing needle to the end of your paracord. Then pulling and pushing it through the other cords but, be gentle the string may snap.

I need this guy to go fishing with me for when I get a backlash on my baitcaster reel so he can undo all those knots I find myself making then cursing at!!

This is of course the technique followed strictly in New Guinea. However in making over 12 monkey stingers myself I follow the much different technique of eastern America where one finds an old lug nut and tie it to a string. I would point out that the variable that I use is different in that I use two knots. Good luck with yours!

I recommend using a mostly round rock and not a steel ball bearing. you should never use this little guy for any kind of impacting of anything anyway, so don't waste the ball bearing. In Boy Scouts, we used to make these with rocks to pass the time between activities or at night when it was too dark to do stuff away from the camp fire. They are pretty relaxing to make because it takes a decent amount of focus to not mess it up and its not overly complicated. If you want to use one for hunting though, you need to go way bigger and you also need to check your local fish and game laws to see if hunting with this kind of weapon is legal. Even in a survival situation, where most hunting laws are suspended, you will want to make a MUCH larger knot. I would recommend you spend your paracord on snare traps anyway because hitting a bird with one these is insanely difficult. its basically a sling that is a lot slower and harder to aim

If you don't have a steel ball bearing, you can use a roll of quarters cut in half and placed side by side, held together with an elastic band. This also gives you a hidden cache of money for phone calls or other minor emergencies. I imagine if you really wanted to, you could use silver or gold coins instead for a considerably larger hidden stash.

I made one from small cannon ball.bout a pound.In a long gym sock,made a loop handle from the top of the sock.hit a canned ham with it, it exploded.i can consistently hit a tuna can embedded in a motorcycle helmet facial opening from bout 4 foot.took a bit of trial to make sure the sock won't rip thru.careful of the rebound they hurt

Loved your video! I've been tying monkey fist knots since I was 14 (1987) All the ones I've ever tied have been ship bell lanyards or for heaving lines. Please forgive my ignorance, but, when you call it an impact tool I'm not 100% sure what that means. So impact tool would be...like something to break glass in an emergency? I swear I'm not a troll. 🤓

I believe that they were very commonly used in Ireland, so of course they're illegal in the UK. And they are very effective. Just a tap behind the ear works well.

We had something like this, just a bit smaller, about the size of a thumbnail as, a key-holder on our storage key for years. Of course being an airline and operating at an international airport, we frequently handed the keys to federal police officers that needed access to the items inside, until one day some freshman copper confiscated the thing "without pressing charges" as it is considered a deadly weapon in our country.. I mean, I understand the rule that any items that even looks like a weapon is considered illegal at the airport, but that was just ludicrous. Too bad my bosses at the time were such wimps and let it slide instead of taking it up the copper chain of command. Fun fact, Customs never cared about that damn thing, even though the used the key very often too. And they are tough mofos that don't let anything slide. Damn freshman coppers.
