It’s been noted that the human experience of life has changed over time, and that during an “axial age”, in the middle of the first millennium BCE, a consciousness that is akin to our own first began to emerge. It’s why, in the west, we feel that philosophy began with figures like Socrates who lived then.
So what are the features of this consciousness, what preceded it, and how has it evolved in the centuries since, particularly in the modern period during which it may have been shifting again?
This lecture will explore how the human experience has changed over time, and how this can account for the birth of philosophy, as we tend to think of it, and the emergence of psychotherapy in the 20th century.
Dr Mark Vernon is a writer, broadcaster, psychotherapist and former Anglican priest, with an interest in Ancient Philosophy. His work focuses on the skills and insights that illuminate our inner lives. He contributes regularly to programmes on the BBC, comments and reviews for the national press, as well as giving talks and leading workshops.
Dr Vernon has degrees in physics and theology, and a PhD in Ancient Greek philosophy. He is a member of the teaching faculty at the School of Life, and works as a psychotherapist in private practice and at the Maudsley hospital.

Dziękuję , jestem wdzięczna za wykład. Od dłuższego czasu obserwuję język i etymologię języka. Zachodząca ewolucja języka, wspólne mianowniki we wszyswkich językach są nieprzypadkowe.

Consciousness evolved out of our dream experience . Modern humans still dream in 1st person and 3rd person. Our original state of conciousness that first evolved, was in our experiencing eality in 3rd person and we reacted instinctively to our environment . We now experience reality in the 1st person. Best Wishes

A fascinating talk. An intriguing thesis. Masses of research. A really excellent presentation. Even before finishing the video I felt enthused to go on my own little researches. Enlightening. Thank you In terms of words I followed Barfield’s path and researched the origins of the word ‘joy’. This lead me back all the way to its ‘ancestral’ etymology which referred to farming, and the enclosing of an area, i.e. a fence. It came to mean a social group, and that feeling of happy sociality, I guess we would say ‘conviviality’. It made me reflect on my own personal sense of joy and its association with an almost closed in sense of pleasure, and then also that more open joy in my life which I recognise as coming out of feeling a part of a group and joy being a sense of the shared happiness. I think of football matches I have attended where we have been victorious - it is the group happiness that adds to the elation.

**Chronology != Evolution** Perhaps **DEVOLUTION** should be the title. 1. How did each of civilization developments out-compete their status quo? 2. Is there ANY continuity in the layers of concepts of self, consciousness, morality, and science? 3. Evolution implies RESPONSE to environment, yet you've provided NO CONNECTION nor CONTRAST between civilized conxciousness development and native people's co-development **while WE "civilized folks" destroy the ENTIRE world ruining it for everyone.**

Glad I was not the only one thinking this. This video needs an entire video to pick apart the interesting evidence presented and the warped conclusions based upon colonialist, supremacist attitudes.

youre putting way too much emphasis on the word evolution from the darwinian standpoint. He isn't making any point, value or moral to the global change of perspective. He's simply speaking of the transitions which took place.

the only scientific fact is that no human as a clue of what consciousness is and if it came before or after matter. it's wild unscientific speculation to assume it has anything to do with evolution.

Marxism doesnt require your attention to be fully occupied only a need for you to be attracted confronted with or to cross paths from what can or will surround your limit of understanding in the future with this sociological interpretation of human interaction and activity in the outside world instead of online.

the production of all of these is like watching a city hall ctv prezi most professionals do better but there is a point to all of these clips on the internet the phase shift in understanding in media studies is divided by like he says alan barfield suggests felt consciousness is like post analytical divergence of Foucoult and modernist philosophical concepts the chiasm and flesh
