Support The Interview with Karan Thapar - fij.mojo.page/...
A subject that has never been discussed publicly and certainly has not been written about before is carefully assessed and analyzed in the recently published first volume of a 2-part major biography of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. I am referring to Mr. Vajpayee’s adulterous relationship with Rajkumari Kaul, who was at the same time married to Birjan Kaul, the warden of the boy’s hostel at Ramjas College in Delhi. The book is called ‘Vajpayee: The Ascent of the Hindu Right 1924-1977’ and confirms that Vajpayee and Kaul had a child out of wedlock in August 1960 called Namita nicknamed Gunnu. As the book says: “As she grew older, Gunnu’s facial features began to resemble her father’s (but) on paper, she was to be the warden’s daughter ... Vajpayee may have felt the void of not being able to officially call himself a father, though Gunnu began calling him ‘Baap ji’.”

Normally anyone's private life is their own business- adulterous or otherwise. But if you are a prominent member of a party that repeatedly emphasizes the sanctity of Indian culture and family life in public , while your private life is the exact opposite of what you preach, the public has a right to know. The public also has a right to question that duplicitous " morality" . A " morality " that says Bon Viveur For Me, But Not For Thee...The double standards/ hypocrisy of our public figures have to be downplayed or not given prominence otherwise the aura surrounding the men erected onto the pedestals would disappear. The greater grand project or agenda of their public lives would potentially come under jeopardy if the truth were to be known. It would be a good idea to accept ( or reject) leaders with all their flaws, moles, warts and all instead of portraying them as ideal human beings beyond mere mortals and therefore beyond the pale of criticism.... One prefers an open and consistenly flawed rogue rather than a duplicitous virtue signaling hypocrite giving the rest of us sanctimonious lectures on values, culture and idealism.

it's a fault of basic human natyre which seek pleasure and there are people who will speak which gives your ears pleasure whether it is a truth or not. and popular speaker can become a popular leader too . and once someone or group becomes popular it is really hard to show their actual life for it may need that strong proof to prove it. and the current world is mostly based on popular views

students of history, people of my generation and the past would know very well the real face of atal vajpayee (very aptly called the mukhouta). was and utter opportunist and double-speak. his shady hypocrisy must be revealed not because it is 'private' but more so because of how his so-called integrity and steadfastness has been eulogised for political mileage. like most rss operatives, modi has tried to emulate some of that fake, nonchalant, fakir persona that has fooled the gullible masses for a while. nice work ! 🙏🙏

Suggestion for Abhishek Choudhary: There were moments where I expected you to slow down and speak with more control rather than much excitement. It's commendable that you've researched so much about Mr Vajpayee. Even as regular South campus students in early 2000s we were aware of his part of his life doing rounds in DU as campus gossip. It's a big moment for you and your ingenuity is appreciated after all you are in front of the Karan Thapar but please the interview at times turned a conversation of squeaks and high decibled outbursts. Nonetheless, best of luck and well done! I'm purchasing this book for aure.

That may be a reason why sanghies are attacking Pandit ji on his so called Edwina affair(though this has been rejected in Collins -La Pierre book., and even if he was having an affair, that was with none other than the most powerful first lady of subcontinent, India benefitted from this relationship). They themselves from founder to Mahajan Munde are in muddy waters.Teaching marality to others,. Vajpayee is right when he argues that pandit ji could not lebel someone from sangh as future PM of India. Fortunately, Indian politicians don't attack each other on this affairs issue, though they may be most abundant here.Otherwise election campaign could become battle ground for yellow gernalism.

Vajpayee though appeared much more e tolerant than Modi was half hearted in his attempts to reign in LK Advani, MM Joshi, Uma Bharati & Kalyan Singh on Babri Masjid. He was the dhritarashtra in hindutva who was used by the party and theur frustrated, idiotic leaders for their own ends.

Great interviews Karan! Please state the name of the author and the book in the description. We should get all information here instead of checking it elsewhere. His adultery, love child etc. was common knowledge to those of us who are from the 70s generation. It used to be said that like sailers are said to have women in each port, he too had women in many places.

The book would definitely make a good read. We haven't arrived here in a day. To understand aspects of it will surely be enlightening. The interview though ! Mr Thapar interrupted the author way too often right in the middle of latter making a point. Also half of the interview is about mr Vajpayee's private life when the book sure has many other aspects!

Lol. This book is stating things that Vajpayee has himself revealed. Just because you are late to realise, doesn't mean you discovered theory of relativity. Those things had already been discovered before he was Prime Minister of India. And yes, he was the right man in the wrong party. Writing factually incorrect comments in caps isn't going to prove anything otherwise.

Interesting discussion and book. Vajpayee was as much an RSS trained man as any other. He and Advani played good cop bad cop all the time. A good orator and patron of the finer things in life including ghazal and scotch deep down he was always inimical to the ideas of Gandhi, Nehru and therefore secularism. He did not say so overtly because he was very old when he became PM and was heading a coalition government. Despite Pokhran and Kargil he was overall a mediocre PM and ran down the economy in about six years. His legacy is not comparable by a far mile to Nehru, Indira and Rajiv despite many blunders they committed. The growth of India far outweighs their shortcomings.

About the personal affairs of VP, except VP all other individuals comes out glowingly - understanding and broad minded - Mr and Mrs Kaul and her two daughters. I would also give credit to the politics of that times and opposition leaders for the decency not to use it against VP, which would be Kosher for todays BJP. Here also VP fails for his hypocrisy and double speak , just as his politics.

Fairly inappropriate & inadequate interview; both parties exploring hypothetical and 'what do you think' questions about Vajpayee's amorous adventures or how Jana Sangh viewed Vajpayee's dalliances. Lot of crystal gazing. Lot of kite flying. Mr. Biographer seems unsure about his own assumptions and conjecture, many times failing to substantiate his own statements with evidence. Doubtful depiction.& unfair (to Vajpayee) at the worst, Mr. Biographer should have garnered & quoted some reliable data, sound bytes and other credible sources. This is not to suggest that Vajpayee was Maryada Purushottam. He was as human as anybody else; but that's besides the point.

Sita Ram Goel ji ,a Hindu icon of twentieth century was highly critical of Nehru and his policies. Would contribute articles to ‘ Organiser’ RSS mouthpiece. They had also promised to public his book free of cost . Once when Vajpayee confronted Sita Ram ji and said , नेहरू के खिलाफ लिखने के अलाव और कोई काम नहीं है क्या । Publishing of his articles stopped and so also the promise of publishing his book. Vajpayee was the one who promoted PDP in J&K to counter National Conference. We all know PDP to be an anti Hindu and National party. Modi in line with Vajpayee has sponsored J&K Apni party a colony of people from PDP, NC and Congress. Not to forget the affidavit read by Kapil Mishra now a BJP face in Delhi, erstwhile AAP member in Delhi Assembly pertaining to Modi for having quarantined a lady in CM residence for three days. Dr Swamy has written a book on Sonia in 2011. Jai Hind

Ive just finished this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in modern political history and the growth of the RSS! Please don’t be misguided by the extent to which Thapar focuses on Vajpayee’s adulterous affair. While its coverage is justified, it’s a very small part of an otherwise nuanced, gripping and comprehensive work!
