I went to Australia with a couple of friends and we saw Midnight Oil at a small outdoor amphitheater in Townsville back in '91. Seriously, this was definitely one of the best rock concerts I have ever seen. Every song was just like this video, Peter Garrett commands the stage with his frantic dancing, the band was rock solid tight and we certainly got more than our money's worth.

My enduring memory of Peter Garrett was him star jumping off a Marshall speaker stack during Cold Cold Change. Also of all the water being poured over Hirsts drum kit whist he was in full flight and also spending drum sticks out into the crowd. This would have been about 1983 at the Old Lion in Adelaide and a great gig!

So, this is from a gig called "Oils On The Water" filmed on Goat Island in Sydney Harbour. The gig starts in daylight, gradually night falls. The entire gig is a movie. The dude was a fan, jumped up on stage. Midnight Oil were this awesome every time they played live. I highly recommend you watch the entire show. Believe it or not, Peter Garret (lead singer & proper mad man) went on to become an Australian Federal Politician. Midnight Oil were renowned for their political views and their songs addressed the plight of Australia's indigenous peoples, the working class and injustices in Australia's political systems.

That's pretty much a typical example of Aussie rock bands, hard working and full throttle. Just thought of another classic band that never made "the big time", but much loved and been playing since the early 80's. The radiators with 'coming home' their first hit off their first album (my favourite album of theirs), then go all the way to 'life's a gamble'. They're an awesome live band, impossible to sit still when you hear them and they're still playing!

Best live band in the world. Peter Garrett (the lead singer) is an amazing human being and has always had the most out there dance moves which we all love. I saw them in the late 80's and always said it was the best concert I've ever seen. I saw them again just 3 weeks ago and nothing has changed. The combination of the message of their songs about human rights, their energy and their commitment to and engagement with the audience is just something everyone should experience. I don't know about the extra dancers on the stage, but it would not surprise me at all if they were from the audience. Peter Garrett would happily dance with them and not have them thrown off the stage. Also, back when his concert happened there was a bit of thing of people trying to copy Peter Garrett's dance moves. Love the oils, truly one of the great bands in history, probably the greatest band ever that did not get the international recognition equal to their talents .... probably because they didn't want it.

It was actually a contest on 2JJ for their 10th Birthday. They were one of the only Radio Stations that would play The Oils in the early days as the commercial stations didn't want to know them. So the announcers were asking for Oils fans to call in and the ones that did were given tickets and were told to meet down at Circular Quay on the day, where they were taken on a ferry to Goat Island where The Oils were set up and ready to play. I saw the concert on TV back in about 85, I was 16 and have adored the band ever since.

This was a concert televised around Australia live. The Oils on Water refers to them playing on Goat Island, a small island in Sydney Harbour just near the CBD. From memory it was promoted by local Radio who gave tickets away to a limited number of people who were then transported to the Island for the Concert - hence a small crowd with close access to the band. The people dancing on Stage with Peter Garrett were definitely from the crowd and it was super chill in terms of security. I was with a couple of mates at there house and we turned the Television up full and took turns dancing on the coffee table with Garrett. Great memories lol.

I saw this band at the Hallam Hotel in South East Melbourne in the 90’s.They we’re doing their 2000 Watts RSL tour, which was like a greatest hits tour. Up on stage they had a spinning wheel with every Midnight Oil song on it. They would invite audience members up on stage to spin the wheel and whatever song it landed on they would play. If the song had already been played that night you got another spin until it landed on one that hadn’t been played. They could play their entire catalogue off the cuff and didn’t just tour playing a rehearsed set list. Amazing Australian band. So lucky to have been there to watch them on their journey.

Was at this concert on the water in Sydney and they just light up the whole place with POWER. Would you believe the lead singer Peter Garrett went on to be our Minister for Arts and the Environment. They do reunion concerts for charity every now and then and he still is just amazing to watch on stage, he has said his dancing is just automatic to the bands energy. This is late 70's early 80's Australian Pub rock which also spawned INXS and AC/DC. The Oils are a band that have devoted a lot of their songs to social justice issues with the lead singer Peter Garrett being a founding member of the Nuclear Disarmament Party before it folded and then a minister in the Australian Labor Party Government.

I was at this secret gig, January '85 in Sydney - I just got lucky. The 'guest' dancer was just a fan. It was broadcast a week later as a 'simulcast', simultaneously on FM radio and TV on the national broadcaster (no adverts.) Available on 'The Best of Both Worlds' double DVD, with the even more breathtaking Capitol Theater concert. The world's best, and smartest band, from my home town.

Seen them live many times, amazing, the late 70s 80s in Sydney was fire 🔥 for live music, I was shocked about the amount of sweat that would spray from the drum skins of Rob Hurst kit.

I saw the Oils play their last ever tour show last Monday and they played as good as I've ever seen them play. Show went for 3 and a half hours.

Certainly breaks away from those redundant ''Beds Are Burning"' reaction videos. What a way to celebrate the 10th birthday of Double J (aka Triple J) - the radio station that launched Midnight Oil in the late 70's.
