ABOUT TREE BARK
Cambium contains about 1000-1200 calories per kilogram. As well as being fried, it can also be dried and pounded into a flour or added to stew or soups.
Traditional diets of Indigenous peoples of Canada show that they ate about 35 species of plants with inner bark, cambium and sap.
The most common are in the Pine Family including True Firs balsam fir, or Canada balsam, grand fir fir, and Pacific silver fir. Other include Slippery Elm, Black Birch, Yellow Birch, Red Spruce, Black Spruce, Balsam Fir and Tamarack. Of all the contenders, Pine seems to be the genus of choice.
The most important food derived from lodgepole pine, however, was the inner bark, including cambium and secondary phloem tissues, which was an almost universal food of the
Interior peoples of British Columbia. The edible tissue is said to be at its prime for harvesting only for a very limited time in spring, the exact interval being determined by elevation and local weather conditions. It was and is usually obtained in late May or early June, when the sap is running and the cambium and surrounding tissues are thick and juicy. This is about the time when the new needles are expanding and the pollen cones in full production. Sometimes local testing is required to determine whether the harvesting time is right. For harvesting, the bark is removed and the ripe cambium tissues scraped off the exposed wood in long, fleshy ribbons 2-3 cm (about 1 in.) wide and up to 60 cm (2 ft) or more long. Special prying implements were used to remove the bark and scrapers, traditionally made of caribou antler, deer ulna or rib, or shoulder blade of deer or bear, were used to harvest the edible tissue.
More recently, a sharp knife, or a tool cut from the curved side of a tin can, has been used as a scraper. A basket or container placed at the bottom of the tree is often used to "catch" the edible ribbons, or "pine noodles" as they fall. Sometimes, if it were later in the season, the edible portion is scraped from the inside of the bark after it had been removed. Usually only a rectangular portion of the bark 1 to 2 m (about 3 to 6 ft) from the ground is removed, and the tree will continue to grow, the scar gradually growing over.
The edible tissue was usually eaten fresh, as it was gathered, or shortly afterwards. When freshly harvested, it is sweet, juicy, and somewhat resinous, but when left it is said to discolor quickly and
"go sour." Sometimes, however, it was dried for winter, when it would be soaked in water before use. Some people like to add sugar to this food, making it even sweeter.

I think a worm bin/farm would be a good video idea. You could use Kevins DIY skills and then use the worms for bait or to feed your trout; they multiply quick. The worm castings are also some of the best natural fertilizers you can get if you decide to start a garden at the compound.

Oh MY god ... THAT is a huge tent! Definitely useful for guides and ice fishing with a whole CLAN. The heat will melt too much ice and make it soggy though ... You bring out the coolest gear sometimes! I think in case of a famine ... the squirrels will be the first to go, then the pigeons/sparrows/starlings/anything with wings, then raccoons (in the cities) ... bark will stay on trees and nobody in the city will touch skunk.
@DKFX1

The insulated floor and the fire mat will keep 97% of the heat off the ice, so there's basically going to be zero melting if you use it properly.

2500 hours is 104 days of use so a fairly long life. Also I suggest removing the glass it is notorious for breaking in those little stoves which is why they give you the replacement metal sides. Which is nice because most companies don't even give you that option and you have to make your own or break down and buy new glass.

So I see you've been watching Survival Russia, or did the companies contact you?🙂 As for the baffle/spark arrester, I think you're brother would find Russian brick ovens/fireplaces really interesting, and make a good project for him. They have chambers that make the fire go around inside to give different heated zones, and use lots of bricks for mass. Very efficient for heat, and the bigger ones are for cooking too. I can find a link to some free (though difficult to follow) plans if he wants. But be careful if you put that behemoth on the ice. It'll catch A LOT of wind!

I consider using salt in raw survival videos as totally normal due to the abundance of the mineral. No need to deprive of salt. Whatever you eat out there without salt it is just bad taste. And salt is also essential life mineral. The nervous system is based on salt acting as transmitter. Life is not possible without it.

With that being said I would be curious how can someone extract salt without tapping into direct salt mines

@@Gru39 Depends on where you are. If you live near the ocean or if there is a briny spring you simply either boil it down (Bit fuel intensive) or you make a large shallow basin and let the sun do all the work to evaporate the water leaving you with the salt. If you don't have either well... You can find natural salt deposits or just get enough from the environment and eating other animals (blood and all no waste)

@@SilvaDreams Makes a whole lot of sense to boil down ocean water to arrive at pure salt. But what bothers me is if the precipitate of ocean water boiling is really pure salt (NaOH). Because might be other kind of salt in there, like potassium chloride or who knows what toxic salts could be deposited in small amounts. Is ocean water really safe ? You can imagine to boil down a toxic salty lake which contains heavy salts harmful to humans, so some kind of care must be taken into account before boiling any kind of water. But you are right, blood contains salt as well.

@@SilvaDreams And also I know that some farmers feed salt rocks to animals, like cows or horses. Apparently these animals cannot extract sufficient salt from plants only. Or at least domesticated animals

@@Gru39 We've been using ocean water for thousands of years to make salt. It use to be a few countries main income because they hand land they'd flood just to let it evaporate... Also your not going to get pure salt from sea water. I mean have you never head of sea salt before? They try selling it for large amounts now days... Along with other specialty salts (Like Pink or black salts which just come deposits that have other minerals in larger amounts)
