The students of Newcomers High School in Long Island City, which specializes in teaching recent immigrants, and those of St. Luke's, a private middle school in Manhattan, have come together to dialogue about difference and combat bias. The Building Bridges project was created through a collaboration between Newcomers teacher Julie Mann, and St. Luke's teacher Kim Allen, who met in 1999 through a Facing History workshop. Ms. Mann's class of English-learners exchanged letters with their St.Luke's "buddies", and in the first of several meet-ups this year, received help editing their personal immigration stories. In return, St.Luke's students are preparing research papers on immigration informed by the interviews they conducted with their Newcomers buddies. Several Newcomers students will also create video diaries, in hopes of sharing their personal stories with a wider audience.
The student video diaries, a book of their stories and more information about their project can be found at www.niot.org/nios/newcomers.

Considering this country's history, projects like this should be standard. Every school should REQUIRE such a program at some point in the student's journey, preferably in middle school. I wonder where all of these kids are now and what lasting impact the project had upon them.

I wish my Irish father and Italian mom had had this sort of program when they were in NYC schools back in the 30s. I grew up in the LIC/Astoria are, so this made me a little weepy. Great story.

we all want to be happy and respected for our hard work but when you are facing discrimination on a regular basis and disrespect, it's horrible and pitty. But it's the reality. when we live in the US, it's because we love the US but when people start racism it's depressing every day.
