I'm from the US and my school was divided into different "continents" of classes; mine was Australia. Our teachers brought us all together to try vegemite... they served each student about a teaspoon per saltine cracker. It's not a mystery why every hated it that way, lol. I gave it another try a few years later and I've been eating it ever since. There's nothing better than a cup of coffee and a little vegemite on buttered toast on a busy morning.
@ChrisLeslieAU
@ChrisLeslieAU 21 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's great. But the real way to try it for the first time, or eat it on the regular, is to have it on toast, but the toast needs to be hot when you butter it, so the butter is melted, then add the Vegemite, and you need to add more than his demo, more like what the team tried. But the melted butter and hot toast is key.

It's Aussie MSG, without the headaches and shortness of breath. Cue the non affected MSG band wagon
@FracturedPixels
@FracturedPixels 2 күн бұрын
@@karizma8175 Hi, Grand Ambassador of the MSG Bandwagon Coalition here, on behalf of Guga and Uncle Rodger. Welcome to my TED talk. Repeated double-blind studies show no connection between consumption of MSG and any of the widely purported side-effects. In fact it was demonstrated in at least one study that people who report to have a negative reaction upon consuming MSG would feel these effects after a meal that they believed to contain MSG, and would feel no negative effects if told that the meal contained no MSG. Whether MSG was actually present yielded no discernible pattern, strongly suggesting the presence of a placebo effect. One study did show that some individuals reported tingles, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath after consuming 3g of MSG without food, but it was noted that this is an extreme amount, as it is highly unlikely that a person would consume more than 500mg per day, even if their diet was very high in MSG. It is also notable that the participants knew they were consuming a large dose of MSG, and the placebo effect was not controlled for. Furthermore, MSG is a natural part of the chemical makeup of many staple foods and you probably eat it every day without knowing it. Foods that are naturally high in MSG include: ham, anchovies, nearly every kind of cheese, mushrooms, walnuts, tomatoes, and you're really gonna love this one: vegemite. For comparison 25g of parmesan cheese (the average amount accompanying a single serving of spaghetti) contains more MSG than a cup of instant noodles (one of the foods most often reported to trigger MSG sensitivity) Additionally, the origins of "Chinese-food sickness" are deeply rooted in racism and xenophobia, and the history of it is worth a read. Please do not spread misinformation, there is literally no downside to fact-checking yourself before making a statement of fact. I sincerely wish you a good day, hot food, cold drinks, and clear skies. May your weekends be long and your trips to the doctor infrequent and uneventful.

As a proud Aussie, I love my Vegemite, and a good way to cook it with meat is to use a lamb shoulder or leg, rub vegemite onto the leg to use as sort of a thick binder instead of mustard or oil, then add your BBQ rub. You do need a bit of elbow grease to get it to work, but don't dilute the vegemite with water, the effort from trying to rub it all over the meat works it in-between the fibers, and as the vegemite crispens and tacks up it will yield a way better crust. If its authentic, it needs to be cooked on a spit on open coals, but a spit attachment to a weber works just fine too. Not sure how it works, but it acts almost like MSG and make the lamb more lamb-y, but also takes away any gaminess., and adds a very nice complementary flavour. I would highly recommend trying it, but for those who haven't already acquired the taste, you want it so the meat is stained brown and there is a little caked substance, but it shouldn't be much thicker than a standard mustard binder.

Vegemite is the Australian version of Marmite, which was first produced in England. Although both products share a similar production process and are made from brewer's yeast extract, Vegemite includes additional spices and celery and onion flavorings, making it more savory. The name "Vegemite" reflects the vegetable flavors of these ingredients, which distinguish it from Marmite.

Come to find that the seasoning uses vegemite. Seriously, spread vegemite on a thin layer of baking paper, and then put in the oven on a very low temperature (about 70-100C) and bake it to get the moisutre out. The smell is incredible. As someone who loves to have a lot of Vegemite on my stuff I'm actually very interested in trying the second way, seemed like my kind of amount of Vegemite for that sized steak. I do have a sous vide in a multi-function slow cooker so I definitely might try it some day. The sauce is definitely the ideal way you'd normally want to use Vegemite in dishes though so not surprised by their reactions either.

I think one of the biggest issues, with people who have not been brought up with Vegemite, when people try it on toast is that, so many testers are used to sweetness and when the saltiness of the yeasts and salts of the Vegemite hits the taste buds, they are completely unused to it. Honestly unless you're brought up eating it, Vegemite is hard to take. But if you're going to try it there's a few simple things to do: 1. Don't use too much. A light or thin smear is better. Slather it on like peanut butter and you're going to be overwhelmed. 2. Avoid the sweet, sugar laden American bread. It really clashes with the saltiness of the spread. 3. Use a good coating of butter or margarine to start with. It cuts the taste down a lot and make it much more palatable to the novice. 4. Don't eat it when the toast is cold. I know a lot of the time on video's there's a long delay between toasting the bread and filming. Sooner is better. If you do these, then you'll have a much better experience with god's spread. I grew up eating it, love it on toast, in sandwiches and also on Rivita crackers with a slice of tasty or one of the mid range sharper cheeses.

Vegemite is basically a paste/spread made of mushroom stock. it's made from the dregs at the bottom of a brewer's barrel specifically the yeast, hence the title "Yeast Extract" (at least originally, IIRC, Kraft maintain yeast colonies specifically for vegemite production these days, as to avoid accidentally sauced 4 year olds eating breakfast) and mixed with a vegetable stock IIRC the way you go from yeast to vegemite is by basically cooking it down in very specific conditions as to cause it to undergo cellular breakdown, releasing a liquid with a fancy name I cannot remember for the life of me right now. This stuff can and has been used as a substitute beef stock by british companies like OXO; or you can then mix that with the vegetable stock and cook it down and you get what is basically vegemite. vegemite toast is the rough equivalent of having a roast and then the following morning dipping buttered toast into the drippings. It'll be salty and meaty and probably have a hint of aromatic vegetables if you did vegetables with your roast like I do.

I consider it our MSG for flavour booster and I think your crew got a bit stooged with the amount you put on the toast for their first try. It's definitely an acquired taste, and we have a long running battle with the UK over which is better. Which camp you are in, it's either Marmite or Vegemite and I can safely say for me Vegemite takes the win every time.
