2:23 - 2:40 - both of those bigger elephants have noticeable smiles, and yes they can smile, they're smiling here. You can also tell these phants are happy because of their low rumbling, squeaks, and those short joyful trumpets. You can also tell by the phants flapping their ears and wagging their tails. And also by the way they are petting each other with their trunks. The combination of all of these signs at the same time mean that these phants are utterly blissfully joyfully happy. They have a good reason, they are in a large green spacious sanctuary, they living amongst carers showing them lots of kindness and compassion. And they are eating food which they find tasty.. And the mother phant is also bonding with her baby as well as the other things. I think it's her that we were hearing the most rumbling from

I always thought it to be gospel that baby ellies could not get milk from other "moms, nanny, older sisters" if they weren't with a baby, and they didn't "aloe suckle" SO I am wayy confused, cuz that Nanny def has milk in her bags.

I think the new nanny was saying she wants Monday as her day off.

That new nanny probably had her babies taken from her and sold to riding camps or other forced labor elephant's don't forget and she still remembers them and being a nanny will ease some of her pain and she will be a loving nanny.

Srinaun was Faa mai's and wan mai's nanny, along with several others. She's about 60 and has done a lot of nannying. She seems to have been nanny to a few very active and mischievous babies, even though her personality is very calm and gentle.

From what I understand the nanny shares the job of guarding and comforting. Suckling the nanny is like a pacifier. The mother can drop her guard to eat or sleep when she has help.

Faa Mai welcomes all new Elle's but she can't be a nanny she's the matriarch of her own family and has a daughter Thong Ae , she's a leader of her family which is the most important family at E N P. if you see Lek under an Elle that's Faa Mai. Punch up on utube ( Faa Mai wants Lek to sing a lullaby to Thong Ae and see that Faa Mai is the most important Elle at E N P. even Lek drops everything if Faa Mai wants something.

@@alking4153 I abso love Lek, The world is blessed with so very few people that dedicate their whole being to a cause. I just am so glad the Elephants have Lek and SWT, they both have single handily slowed the Elephant poaching down to a pace that we can monitor and try and cease. We'd never be this far along with these 2 communities.

Exactly. I'm confused, as Srinuan was already a nanny, about a month ago. Has that changed ?

I know, they are so fascinating. Just makes you wonder how intricate their communication is? Their actions and reactions make me believe they are every bit aware of so much more than ever has been recorded before. KZfaq was the greatest gift to all Animals being poached. We are so more aware of how dark these possible distinctions (and possible) go. Although I am sure its also used for nefarious things that cost some animals their lives, just the notoriety alone helps with so many causes these days.

I dont think its a good behaviour. I know the mum is wary of the dogs so maybe there are dogs out of our view.

They are signaling to other elephants who can hear the vibrations through their feet. It might be a warning to stay away.

When an elephant hits the ground with their trunk, it signals that they feel danger, whether real or imagined, that they are worried, and ENP's instructions to visitors at those times, is that the elephant should not be approached, as their behavior could be unpredictable since they feel unsafe.

How in the world is the Srinuan producing milk? Everything we've been told up to this point, not only do they not produce milk, but they rarely "allo suckle" if at all. I know I have watched documentaries where the picture the producer paints if a little elephant is lost that if another family of elephants comes across a baby they ignore it and push it away for they didn't allo suckle and no one wants to take care of it. Now after the last 5-10 yrs of watching all these wonderful people and their different elephant projects, I find that so hard to believe. These females actually plot things, JUST TO GET TO BE A NANNY!!! So we have been taught wrong in the past.

@@MRKRG9 what you were told is truer for African elephants. Although sometimes a mother will allow it, but it is not common. Asian elephants usually do allow a baby to suckle more often then a African elephant.

My understanding is that Kham Moon did produce sufficient milk, and that nannies (who haven't recently given birth) do not produce milk at all, but that babes suckle from a nanny for comfort and bonding. Someone had said in a comment to re-watch this video for milk on Pyi Mai's mouth after suckling from Sri Nuan, so I rewatched carefully, and I saw white inside the end of Pyi Mai's TRUNK, but not on her mouth, and NOT In her mouth, but only inside the end of her trunk, and that appearance remained minutes later in the video when she was not nursing. So maybe it was just the appearance of the inside of the end of her trunk, not actual milk. If Lek says that Sri Nuan uncommonly produces milk at her age without having had a babe of her own recently, then that leaves a lot to ponder.

Srinuan is still Wan Mai's nanny also. Pyi Mai and her mom Kham Moon arrived at the park later and were in need of a nanny. Despite Faa Mai's efforts to nominate herself, Pyi Mai chose Srinuan. I'm not sure what happens now that both babies have Srinuan as nanny.

@Theopisti Panagiotakou I imagine the older elephant has some pretty good skills and can know how to put the mom at ease. She was so great when Wan Mai and her mom arrived at ENP - there's a video showing her letting the mom eat and do whatever she liked while she only focused on the baby. Faa Mai still has a big family and young Thong Ae, who adores her. But with Sri Nuan as the Pyi Mai's nanny, the hope is they create a new family, which will allow the 2 babies to play together and grow up together as a family.

Faa Mai is the matriarch of her family and Faa Mai and Lek have a mother daughter relationship that's why Faa Mai has the run of the place and did you notice the mahout's can't give orders to her only Lek talks to her. And Faa Mai is raising a daughter Thong Ae.

@Theopisti Panagiotakou Thong Ae was adopted by Faa Mai as a baby and is still by her side and Faa Mai's family accept her as family and Thong Ae like all babies never leaves her mother's family.

@@alking4153 Faa Mai is 12 years old, just a girl, her mother, Mae Bua Thong, is her matriarch. Mae Bua Thong and others in the family herd said 'No' to Ploy Thong joining their herd, despite Faa Mai's best efforts to have Ploy Thong join them. Thong Ae was adopted by 2 other older female elephants (older than Faa Mai). Faa Mai has a very loving and adoptive spirit/attitude, wants to include everyone, but sometimes, others don't agree.

I guess because thats elephants normal do. baby/babies have their nannies to protect them just incase the babies slip in mud, help to cross the river etc (in a wild, also to guide the baby so they wont get lost, to protect babies from predator such as lions, bull attacks, hyena etc)

Rumbling is a form of communication, just as every other sound they make, just as all their movements are too. Elephant language is not that of cats, elephants have their own language, that researchers over many decades of study have begun to translate into English.

I believe the nanny (the bigger elephant, with the pinkish hues on her trunk, Sri Nuan) was the one rumbling, and that she was worried since she hit the ground twice with her trunk. I believe it was the mother (smaller, Kham Moon) that trumpeted, and it's clear she was stressed (she rocked side to side for a bit) as she was having to accept a nanny that her babe had accepted, that she, herself, wasn't sure of.

That's what I'm feeling at this end of a KZfaq video ... Kha Moon has always seemed quite "uptight" ... this new development seems to have happened quite suddenly and out of the blue ... Sri Nuan comes across as a wonderfully serene matriarchal figure but does this mean she's now caretaker for both Princess Wan Mai AND Humdinger-in-Chief Pyi Mai? Reminds me of, "This, Jim, is your mission ...... should you choose to accept it" 🤪🤪

@Theopisti Panagiotakou She wouldn't be in ENP w/o being gang-pressed in a vicious Thailand industry, such as tourism. Hence, she was 'kidnapped' from her Mother/ HERD,. Her fears of Nanny seem utterly possible if she's never experienced a Nanny. Her bkgnd. is understood by Lek...but the individual experiences are surely unknown. Thailand has a vicious inferiority complex to ELEPHANT.

The nanny’s teat is more like a pacifier for the baby, they do not produce milk. This is what I learned from watching some other videos about the nanny’s.

Yeah I hear too Lek say that Srinuan started to lactate, although she doesn't now have her own baby. Lek considered it very uncommon, and she would be one to know.

It makes mum more comfortable so she isn’t worrying about the baby all the time they share the job of looking after the baby . They are always having to stay alert to look after the little one

Nannies watch over baby and give mother a chance to rest and take care of herself..baby elephants are exhaustingly interactive. Nanny may not have milk, dry duckling comforts the baby and establishes a strong bond

They need a herd and its complex structure to meet their emotionsl needs (and for offspring safety in the wild). This mother in particular needs the support as she is recovering from trauma and adjusting to a new home while raising an infant. The bonding will be beneficial to all.
