@@MoireFly You are acting like Jon Stewart was a scientist or politician giving a press conference. He gave a short monologue, off the cuff, about what he believes about science. I fail to see what the existence of labs in New York City has with anything? Because the city is half the size? Why not compare it to a relatively sized European city or something? Did this pandemic occur because of a break-out in a New York City Lab? Did the 1918 Pandemic happen because of a New York City Lab? What about the 1957, 1968, or 2009 Pandemics? Any of them come from a New York City lab? The fact is the US, as well as the rest of North America, and Europe has scientific standards and quarantine procedures. China does not seem to, and does not seem willing to admit fault, even threatening the US if we even think about accusing them of causing this mess. Also uou do know that the bats weren't native to Wuhan don't you? Or is that a fact that you omitted because it actually does point to the lab being the culprit. Funny enough this exact lab was performing gain of function research on novel coronaviruses, of which the current pandemic is one. It is breaking taboos, Colbert is basically sweating because he knows he is going to get in trouble for not silencing Jon. For once look somewhere else besides the lies you are being fed. It is not a conspiracy to question the origin of this virus, it is not racist to say the virus came from China, and it is not anti-science to seek multiple opinions, that is literally what Peer Review is, and is the foundation science is built upon.

Indeed, he has continued to stay grounded in the face of success and it pains me to say it but I wish the same could be said of Colbert. I used to love the Colbert Report, probably one of the best satirical shows ever created, but yeah the time spent at CBS coupled with all the Trump hysteria (especially in regards to Russia; narcissistic dipshit yes, shady real estate schemes used to launder money yes, Kremlin agent...uh...no) and I'm sure the massive wealth/new social circles of influence that come along with all of that seems to have allowed him to swallow the neoliberal kool aid and defend the democratic party establishment at all costs, humor definitely being one of those and I don't think that's a coincidence. I don't blame him for this to be clear, just pointing out a turning point, where Stewart would interrogate someone like Judith Miller unquestionably repeating CIA bs about WMDs in Iraq to pound the war drum for the military industrial complex, Colbert seems content chatting with the same kind of complicit ghouls like John Bolton over their shared offense toward Trump's "unpresidential demeanor"...as he proceeds to bomb Solemani on Bolton's recommendation or whatever. Basically the implicit propaganda model laid out by Chomsky and Herman in Manufacturing Consent seems to have taken its toll. Yes Trump bad, but the bar of being better than that carnival barker conman is not the only standard we should be satisfied in exceeding.

And say something crazy like, I dunno, viruses can be altered in laboratories
@Foxmonsieur
@Foxmonsieur 3 жыл бұрын
@@chubsley2000 For now we don't know if the virus passed on people via zoonotic propagation, an in lab accidental contamination or a involontary diffusion, many groups work on different investigations but sadly we don't know at the time where it comes from. If we truly agree that John is going a little to far on that one - I take it on the comedy aspect more than the personal conviction -, everything must be examined. The most probable hypothesis is the first, because chinese cities expansion destroys more and more of untouched land and therefore, exposes people to wild animals carrying uncommon or unknown diseases. Ebola is one of them, Aids comes from the chimps' SIV mutated when people ate them and explode with poachers and occidentals who came for sport hunts in DRC. Mainland Chineses have a traditional medicine based on exotic foods, it can be a probability is that a guy ate a fucking bat/pangolin/weird wild animal and get infected drinking its blood (decapitated bats spilling blood in a glasse is a gourmet choice in some parts of the world, in Bolivia against epilepsy, in India to cure rheumatism, in some countries in Africa cook bat meat to get strengh after illness). But probability is not certainty, and the other options are staying on the table, at least for a moment. An in lab contamination during animal care or via feces is possible and hard to trace back, but it's possible, shelter workers get hurt all the time but dogs and cats, pest control workers by anything from rats to raccons. Rabies is one of the most classic contamination for shelter people, so managing the care of lab wild animals is not a thin probability. The later option is - to me - the most improbable option because engineered/modified viruses have often markers and traces of human modification and rarely mutate at that rate. To add more, the first contaminated people like during the CES in Vegas or the people coming back to Seattle and having it in late december early january would have the same markers originating from the first version of the virus and therfore, the proofs of a human made virus. But for now, even if it's a 3% chance of being the truth, for now, we need to examine every probabilty, because 3% is far more than our chances to win a billion at the lottery. On the other side, China has been called out many times for its work on bioweapons, source of many tensions inside the United Nations Security Council. But if they don't move seeing the extermination camps far in the north, you bet they grumbled a bit and slapped a hand but nothing more. So yeah, I'm with you on this one, John is going far with his train of thoughts, but not entirely. The lab he's talking about is a P4 lab, but others, P3 et P2 exist in the same zone near the market we all know now. P4 is too secured and doesn't work on this type of viruses, it have been directed by China and France, (who parted away a few years ago) to conduct research on the SARS who killed many people in 2002/2003. But because there's a but, you can see one of the researchers of P3 lab of Wuhan, Dr. Tian Junha, capturing wild bats with his bare hand like a mad lad in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdyeiNyFt7Opgn0.html. So, John is right when he says a dumb scientist could kill us all, I'm more of a believer of the terrible Murphy's law so the zoonotic contamination or the researcher hurt by a wild subject are my guesses. One day, someone will forget to close a door or put gloves, and we'll be fucked, that's pretty much our entire history.

@Ivan Zhao He's not a simpleton. He believes what he believes based off of the tools and programming that his environment gave him. Some people realize that this world is fucked up and full of conspiracies and they decide that everything is a conspiracy. Some get driven mad, some can recognize their madness and pull themselves back from the edge before they fall into it and become consumed by it. Still not getting the vaccine myself. Takes 2-4 just to construct a stable, safe vaccine for TESTING on people. Testing takes far longer 5-10 or 5-15 years. Point being is that we don't know how these vaccines will effect people 5, 10, 30 years down the line. My grandma got heart failure decades after receiving treatment for breast cancer (adriamycin). Now granted, chemo and vaccines are two different things. But I ain't fucking with some rushed vaccine, or medicine of any kind.

I don't know what you think on the lab leak matter, but when Jon Stewart says he's being serious, making jokes around it doesn't negate his message. It's worrisome that people are afraid to entertain an at least seemingly likely theory. It's worrisome that people would try and silence it like they have been. The only area of science where that phrase is even just MAYBE applicable is AGI (artificial general intelligence) research. There's a reason that quote is in a piece of fiction. Scientists are CONSTANTLY concerned about whether or not they "should" do any particular type of research, and take a great deal of effort to ensure safety. If the reasonably knowable risks of researching something cannot be reduced enough to not outweigh the benefits, they typically don't do it. Scientists have certainly made mistakes, and will continue to do so. But the idea that scientists just recklessly research anything they want without safety considerations is preposterous, and indicates a deep misunderstanding/ignorance about how scientists conduct research. The only reason AGI research might be different is because our understanding of consciousness, logic, chaos theory (actual chaos theory, not jurassic Park chaos theory), and ethics isn't fully formed enough to really make any reasonable, actionable predictions about how a new form of consciousness with near-limitless processing power and information would act. Even then, it's not like people working in the field of AGI aren't being extraordinarily careful, considering the consequences, and working to develop safeguards.

@@Dave_of_Mordor Okay no that’s just not true. I swear some people’s belief in science/scientists trumps religious zealots. The entire point of that quote, nay, Jurassic Park as a whole is that humanity is like a dog chasing cars. It just does things to see if it can. Science is about sating mankind’s curiosity not improving our lot as a species. Science can be our death as well as our salvation. Seeing as how humans are inherently selfish, I’d say that the former option is far more likely.

@Preston Whisenant LOL, your leftist clown world made this, with socialistic policies and governments grabbing control, explicitly being the ones crushing small businesses. more capitalistic systems has overperformed more left economies everywhere in every comparison, its ludicrously statistically consistent across the board how the more open and less taxed an economy is the better the growth of it is on every economic class (except for potentially the highest class people who, potentially, could thrive more in the state governed economy that we just saw for the last year) you wouldnt know capitalism if it hit you in trhe face
